And we're back. I described our trip back down this road here: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=53659

We'll be starting lantus back up in a day or two... Just like last time, the diagnosis came a little less than two weeks before a vacation. Awesome-sauce.

Based on how quickly Vesta went OTJ last time, I'm thinking of a starting dosage of 0.5 units. How does that sound to you guys? The vet wanted to start out at 1 unit but I'm going to take a copy of her spreadsheet in with me this afternoon to discuss it a little more. A full unit may be too high. Who knows though.

Also, the vet wants to try her on D/M or the other brand of prescription diet diabetic food. Wet only, per my preference. I need to go back and check Binky's charts, but how do you all feel about FF? It's what she's been on since the original dx in 04/10 and I'm still pretty happy with it.

Just wanted to say "hey" ;-) Thanks for all the support last time around- I'm sure this time will be great too.

Hi and "welcome back" I guess! Has vesta had any problems lately? I mean, has she had any dental problems, or any illnesses? Sometimes when a kitty relapses there is an underlying cause, best to rule out anything like infection before starting lantus ..

If you've already done all that, then disregard the above :-D

I know there are many, many people on here who feed low carb FF .. we were feeding that to mocha, but it got to be to pricey for us .. We switched her over to wal marts brand special kitty turkey and giblets .. the can's are larger, 5.5oz (or 5.0 oz, can't remember) and only .43 .. anyways, she loves it ..

No recent medical issues. She had a dental back in May but has tested normal since then. The reason we even noticed the diabetes (no outward symptoms) was because of a cloudy eye that seemed to appear overnight. Dx as Anterior Uveitis. The vet isn't sure which came first, the relapse or the uveitis. He also thinks the diabetes may fade away again once the eye is fully healed in a couple of weeks and her system is back to normal.

My shotgun leap to going back on the juice is mostly due to leaving town for 10 days, starting 10/14. She'll either have a house-sitter who will administer shots, or will be boarded (ugh). I'm afraid of her deteriorating in the 10 days that we're gone, so want to nip this in the bud before we leave.

Sounds just like last time, huh?

I have no issues with the FF per say (cost or quality), I just wasn't sure if it had kept up its reputation since I've been MIA. Any updates to Binky's charts in the last 18 months or so? The FF values are quite a few years old.

Well hopefully her BG's come back down once the eye is better .. what exactly is treatment for such a thing?

As far as I know FF values are staying the same, of course some people on the board here notice some spikes in numbers with certain flavors, but as long as you know how vesta does on them, you should be good to go ..

Sorry to see you back, Jamie, but welcome!

BTW, the link to you post describing what happened isn't working. You need to encase the link in .

I don't know what to tell you about FF. Some people have noted that the Turkey & Giblets seems to produce higher BG numbers. One of the other members here passed along this link regarding carb values in FF. The problem is that I haven't gone back to Janet & Binky's list to read the FAQs to know if the calculations were done the same way. DM is 7% carb. The carb values aren't horrible but the quality of the food is. Look the ingredients up on the web. It's really junk food. For what you'll pay for DM, you can easily buy a premium, human grade cat food that's lower in carbs (e.g., Wellness, EVO, etc.).

Starting at 0.5u sounds reasonable. Vesta was never on a big dose of insulin. I'd just monitor carefully. Also, as a cat that's back from the Falls, Vesta is going to need to drop below 40 to earn dose reductions.

Thanks, Sienne and Peter.

Basically, we took Vesta to the vet because it appeared as though her left eye developed a cataract overnight. They diagnosed as anterior uveitis and did bloodwork and a urinalysis. Bloodwork showed 295 BG, and there was glucose in her urine.

She's on Neo Poly Dex drops for her eye, as well as antibiotics. Not so sure she needs the a/bs though. I'm calling the vet back tomorrow because I don't think the eye is getting a whole lot better. Some improvement, but still cloudy. Ooof.

I'll look into more of the food stuff... definitely not switching to the vet stuff though. Just not worth it. Possibly won't switch at all. So overwhelmed, all over again.
