ZOIKES! That's quite a drop, there Mr. Red! Maybe he can stay there for a bit...

Agree that a +3 would be a good idea.

Odd that he ate a lot and you still got that big drop by +2.

An active cycle - when you see a drop that is pretty significant (like this one) by +2, in can be an indication that the numbers will go lower in the next few hours until a cat reaches their normal "nadir" time. A typical cycle would be one where the +2 number is right around the same as the preshot number was, then you would see a gradual drop to +6 or so.

When you see an early drop, it's a good idea to check within another hour (depending on just how low that +2 test might have been).

Active can mean a quicker than normal drop in numbers, or a bigger than normal drop in numbers.

Right now, Red looks good at +4, not too low. But keep an eye out between now and say +6, maybe test at +5? And if he would normally get a snack between now and then, that's fine to give him. No need for "panic", just something you want to be watching for.

Thanks for that explaination, makes perfect sense.
I tested at +5 now 88. He has x3 meals p/d so will eat now.
Cant test till +8 now.
will post later.

That number looks much better, Kath. He should be good if he's eating now. I would guess the +8 will be a little higher since he'd be past nadir then. Nice cycle!

Hi I would really love some advice re whether to shoot?
+9 was 146 and now PMPS is 178.
I will add it to the ss.
Can't really risk being up all night.
Love to hear from you

I'd shoot his .5u dose. Looks like he's coming up fast enough. He's probably starting to bounce from that fast drop this morning. Bouncing can be caused by fast drops as well as lower numbers than his liver is used to.

One thing I want to be sure and clarify from earlier posts. A typical lantus cycle is an active cycle. If the +2 is much less than the preshot, then you should expect an early and perhaps steep drop and a much more active cycle than a typical lantus cycle.

Hi have shot 0.5 dose.
Please can you explain what you mean by bounce is that good or not?

Of course! :-D

When a kitty is first diagnosed with FD, he/she has probably been at high numbers for a while. The body...especially the liver...has adjusted to higher numbers as the new normal. It's the livers job to release counterregulatory hormones and glucagon to protect the body from fast drops in blood glucose or low numbers.

So when Red starts working the insulin and drops quickly, like today or gets to a number lower than what the liver
now sees as "normal", then the liver releases the hormones and glucagon to raise the BG. This is called a bounce.

Bounces show us the liver is doing its job. When we are looking at SSs to determine dose, we ignore the bounce numbers. All cats bounce...some longer than others. There isn't alot you can do. A kitty will bounce until it doesn't. If you see a really high number followed by flat yellow, then it's likely the bounce is clearing and numbers will drop like today.

Does that help? :-D

Hi everyone,
PMPS 178 (0.5 given) +2 115.
Reds weight had dropped from 6.5kg when we 1st got him in March 2012 to 5.8kg at diagnosis, 5 weeks ago. By the time he started on insulin last week he was 5kg Although all measured on different scales, quite a drop. He is quite a big, long cat and had started to look a bit emaciated! Good news. After a week on insulin and I think eating well on LC canned food he is now 5.2kg and certainly feels better/less fragile. He could have probably done with loosing the 1st 0.5kg but not the rest.
Thanks for the advice tonight. Less scary when you can look at the ss and make some predictions on how he will (probably) react.
