all is well with punkin this morning. breakfasts #1 & 2 down - a nice morning nap, the world has been surveyed from the top of the coffee table, and one attack from anya fended off.

our son surprised us with a visit last night -needed a little parental support to counter the "i can't find a job" blues.

i'm thinking punkin's cruising towards a dose decrease before long.

i think we're going to stop giving the bupe. we're almost out of it. i really can't tell any difference in him after we've been giving it to him for 8-9 days. we were giving it to him because often acro cats have pain, but he still doesn't really want to be held, stair-climbing hasn't seemed to change, his numbers might be a little lower but we also have the potential that the SRT is beginning to affect his numbers. with the bupe doses that i've skipped, his numbers don't seem to be higher.

the vet suggested accupuncture and i'm thinking of trying that instead. i'm also unsure of how good the bupe absorption has been - i have to get it on his gums to be absorbed there. oddly enough, he isn't keen on me sticking the syringe up under his lips.

if ya have any thoughts on the bupe, i'd listen . . . perhaps i'm not seeing what it's doing?
so i guess wh

Nice BG this morning! Can't understand why punkin doesn't want that ole syringe in his mouth. We had 3 acupuncture treatments for Zener, which our pet communicator said would help him. We thought it helped his appetite. It was $70 per treatment from our vet.

Re: 10/30 punkin amps179 +3/101

hahahaa i guess i was levitated. that must explain why when i hit "post" it said "sorry sucker, you can't post again this soon!" just a paraphrase, of course.

now if i were younger, i would know what i was going to say there. but now, i have no idea. so let's pretend that last sentence fragment is just there to keep everyone from going to sleep. you can look at it and say "where'd she go?"

punkin's numbers have been coming down nicely.....interesting......kinda exciting too.....just sayin'.....

i saw a big ole orange furry kitty at one of the shelters the other day.....and i immediately thought of punkin.....just wanted to give him a big ole texas size hug.

this video will have to do....how to hug a cat.....

Re: 10/30 punkin amps179 +3/101 +5/66

I love seeing Punkin's lower numbers. And the possibility of a decrease. That IS good news!

Some kitties don't like being picked up much - so unless this is new behavior I wouldn't worry too much.
My MC cats don't like being picked up very much. BigMac is ok and he'll sit on my lap for oh... about 20 seconds. He prefers to sit on whatever I'm working on or my keyboard. We made a deal that he gets to sit in front of the monitor but off the keyboard. Sometimes that works. My civvie Cappi HATES me to pick her up. She will get on my lap all by herself if you please. But don't touch her ladyship until she says so. Sheesh. Crazy cats.

If Punkin is part MC, I can understand some of the behavior. They are very loyal and curious, they like being near you but are not what you'd call 'lap fungus'.

Tena, cute video! That's basically how I have to hug my kitties. (Minus the pacifier.)

Re: 10/30 punkin amps179 +3/101 +5/66

he was a lap fungus until he got diabetic - maybe a couple of months into it. if i sat down, he was on my lap. he even liked me to hold him like a 2 year old on my hip while i was doing things. lap fungus is a PERFECT description! now if i pick him up he wants down. he might stay with me for a few seconds, but not long - so it is a different behavior for him, one that could be explained by some achy-ness.

love the video, tena! we had a kitter who actually did hug you. felix would put his arms on either shoulder and then rub on both sides of your face. awww, we miss felix. he hated to be on your lap, though - always. he wanted to sit beside you on your chair, and in some of our chairs he took up the whole thing. he weighed about 20 pounds and was on a perpetual diet. he got 1/8 cup of crunchies (vet supplied, of course, for a tender gut) twice a day and never was satisfied. poor little guy. never lost weight either.

Oh what a day for our PUNKIN!!!!! Awesome!

That is so funny about the disappearing Julie. Well...you got my attention!

On the bupe...we wondered if it was helping Gus so we stopped it and realized that it was, in fact, helping his arthritis. Just subtle differences.

Good luck with the 'puncture!

Julie,
Punkin it looking good!! He really has nice color today :-D Sorry he isn't 100%, but maybe the acupuncture will help. After all you have gone through with him, it would be nice if he felt a little better.
Missy and I send him healing vines....

Re: 10/30 punkin amps179 +3/101 +5/66-69 +6/74

Hey Julie and Punkin,

Sounds like Punkin had a perfect morning.....yet again. And he sure is having amazing numbers today too!

I am kinda on the fence about giving oral bupe in the cheek, Leo has been on bupe now for 2-ish weeks or so, it doesn't matter if i shoot him in the cheek or just straight in the mouth. In fact i waited till he yawned last night and shot it on his tounge and he was still totally stoned, so does it really matter if you shoot in the cheek or just anywhere in the mouth? Leo's vet did the same thing i did as well, she didn't try to shoot it in his cheek. Plus bupe seems really really thick and viscous so i don't think it can readily be swallowed all that easily. Leo's bupe is salmon-flavored :-D

Sounds like our kitties lose alot of their little routines when they get FD, maybe the lap fungus will come back on its own eventually?

I've been meaning to ask you about that wonky pen you had a few months back. Seems i've got the same situation going on now, i insert the syringe into the pen and pull the plunger out and i get so much pressure that the plunger gets sucked back in. Even my dad said this pen had some wonkiness to it as well, in terms of pressure. What did you end up doing with your pen? Did you just end up tossing it?

Re: 10/30 punkin amps179 +3/101 +5/66-69 +6/74

Punkin's numbers are looking really good!! I hope the low numbers are because the SRT is kicking in!!

Champ used to sleep with me every night, without fail. Ever since FD he hasn't. He's become more affectionate in every other way, but refuses to sleep on the bed. I've tried putting him on the bed, making a walkway up to the bed, everything, but nothing has worked. It may be that Punkin has just changed, maybe because of the FD, maybe because of the acro, maybe because of the SRT....maybe for who knows why!!! Hopefully, he'll get back to the ol' Punkin!!

Re: 10/30 punkin amps179 +3/101 +5/66-69 +6/74

Hi Guys,
Those are really nice numbers, Punkin! Keep up the good work.

Sorry that the bupe is such a pain (!), but don't know what to say about that.
Rusty doesn't mind being picked up (Edward is a good picker-upper; I'm not so good) and he is a lap cat, as well as a sit-next-to-you cat, as well as a nighttime cuddler. So I guess even with Maine Coons, ECID.

Sending healing hugs to Punkin. Is he coming as a punkin to the kitty Halloween party tomorrow?

Have a good evening,

Ella & Rusty

p.s. to Tena: that cat in the video has the patience of a saint!!

Re: 10/30 punkin amps179 +3/101 +5/66-69 +6/74

With those numbers, it looks like Punkin gets a decrease.

When I used oral bupe, I shot into the cheek pouch.

Re: 10/30 punkin amps179 +3/101 +5/66

Nice numbahs, Mr Punkin!! I hope the SRT is really starting to kick in. This is exciting for all of LL!!!

This is actually very interesting. I have a couple MC mixes, and my Petey in particular HATES being picked up. He has "lap fungus" moments (usually brief, and they suddenly end), and LOVES pets and attention, though.

Re: 10/30 punkin amps179 +3/101 +5/66-69 +6/74

nice numbers for Punkin.

I remember Jojo saying that the best way to test for pain was to do a trial of pain meds and see if it made a difference. It seems logical that the opposite would be true, that you could try withdrawing the meds to see if there is a difference.

Re: 10/30 punkin amps179 +3/101 +5/66-69 +6/74

Hi guys!!

WOW on the numbers, and love the disappearance this AM. :-D

I have a friend who has gone with acupuncture for her kitty that has arthritis. she feels that it has really helped her kitty: much more mobile and active. I believe she goes in every two weeks to have it repeated, but she says it has made such a difference that she doesn't mind the repeated trips. I hear some cats can go even longer between treatments.

Re: 10/30 punkin amps179 +3/101 +5/66-69 +6/74 pmps 161

we dropped his dose tonight - thanks for everyone checking in. after giving him a couple TB of high carb food, plus 1/2 can of turkey & giblets and he still got down to 66 we thought he needs a little less lantus.

also picked up a heated bed for him to see if that helps. the local pet store had them on sale, so we thought it was worth trying. put some catnip on it to tempt him and he's on it right now! wahoo!

the new vet we're going to has 2 diabetic cats, one 18 years old - she's had accupuncture for her own cat and said she went from being a skeptic to being convinced. the accupunturist is a veterinarian - i guess the typical arrangement is once a week for about a month, then decreasing frequency as long as the cat's benefit is maintained. i'll see how he is for a couple of days without bupe and reassess. he hasn't had any today.

tracy, as far as the wonky pen that was bent on making me insane :-D i got a pen needle from the pharmacist and there are directions on lantus.com for getting rid of the air bubbles in the pen. however, after it sucked the lantus back into the pen a couple of times and there were so many bubbles in the pen, i stopped using it. i hung on to it and that's what i used for the video in the sticky "how to take care of your lantus" so it wasn't a total loss. if i'd only been drawing up a unit or two i might have been able to use it, but trying to hold onto the pen while pulling the syringe plunger out far enough to pull up 12 or whatever units against the pull of the negative pressure was too crazy and i simply couldn't do it. you have to readjust your hand to pull the plunger out far enough. anyway, i thought the lantus was contaminated and stopped using it anyway.

*gasp* anne! you're right! i forgot tomorrow was punkin's holiday! we have to plan something special!
