We are getting frustrated as H***!!! Tried at 7:45 am before his shot - 2 sticks - no luck. Tried at 10 am - 5 sticks/5 strips - no luck. Tried at 2 pm (usually lucky) 8 sticks/ 5 strips - no luck but, almost lost as thumb! Those were paw sticks. At 2:30 pm tried ear sticks no blood!! - gouged inner thigh! Plus his scab is half off! He bit DH. Our attitude is fine - his stinks. The look he gives us says "I'm winning" and then he waits for his food as if he earned it. It's not getting better - it's getting worse! :-x :-x cat(2)_steam
 
I wonder if it wouldn't be quicker to use one of those large clips that are used to close potato chip bags (think they're called "chip clips"). Same idea, just faster. I'm tempted to use this with my CRF cat for fluids when I'm doing them alone.
 
are you warming the cats ear with a microwaved sock filled with rice?
If the cats ears are cold, it is hard to get blood.
I found using a lancet manually at a 45 degree angle makes it easier.

(( Sally )) Have you tried the inside of the ear, towards the edge and close to the base? If you sort of pinch off his ear above where you want to poke and give it a minute to bead I think that's the direction the blood comes. Others have probably said this but you can also try increasing the depth of the needle. I keep mine on the middle setting for needle depth. Also, approaching from the side works better than head on.

Maybe there's someone in your area that could help get your first couple draws, some times that's a big help.
 
have you tried free hand with the lancet only - and no lancet device? it is so much easier for me that way. and yes on holding the ear. Good luck - I am sorry that this is so frustrating.
