You are not doing anything wrong! :YMHUG: Their BGs do bounce all over the place when they are unregulated. Since you have you Lantus now, I would put "starting dose ???" in the subject to get soome specific attention.

Re: 10/26 Shanga AMBG - 132, +3/178, +5.5 249, +7.5 363

Hi Pallid,

You have done nothing wrong.
You have done many good things for Shanga - changed his diet to LC canned food, started feeding him frequent smaller meals and monitoring his BG.

:?: Is Shanga still being given interferon? If so, can you please provide the details - brand name, dose, how it is administered etc.

Re: 10/26 Shanga AMBG - 132, +3/178, +5.5 249, +7.5 363

Hi guys .. I agree, you have done nothing wrong .. And I think to write, starting dose? in your subject line is a good idea .. there are many experienced people here who can help you with that .. have a great day!

Hello Guys,

Thank you ALL for your support...
I want to start insulin but his BG goes down suddenly from 400's to 100's in an hour ... So that scares me that if he gets hipoglicemia...
Dear Sandy and Black Kitty,
Yes I still use Interferon. Vet prepared it. I think the real name is roferon... I give 2 cc everyday for 7 days and stop for 7 days. then 2 cc for 7 days again...
His stomatitis seems better after i started to give him interferon. I give it orally... Its liquid.

His BG was 144 at 09.30 pm...

I think his blood sugar is playing with meeeee... ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile

Thank You Guys,
Have a Great Day :)

We all try so hard to see the patterns. Then just when we think we have it figured out, the kitties remind us of our limited human knowledge. You're doing fine, hang in there.

sandy and i have been looking into the drug interferon. it seems interferon can cause hypoglycemia. i have to wonder if the use of interferon is causing the wild swings you're seeing in shanga's blood sugar. it should also be noted that interferon can cause blood sugar problems according to the info in this link:

"Blood sugar problems: Some patients may develop a problem with the way their body controls their blood sugar and may develop diabetes."
http://www.fda.gov/downloads/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm111340.pdf

is shanga supposed to take interferon for the rest of his life?

i don't pretend to know much about this, but it sounds to me like treating diabetes with insulin while taking interferon could be tricky. there could be an increased risk of hypoglycemia. perhaps this is why your vet doesn't want to start insulin yet.

you might want to talk to your vet about this...

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for the interferon information Jill & Alex... I use interferon for a week then stop for a week, his blood sugar goes up even he doesnt get interferon.
But I called a couple of vets this morning. They said They didnt think he had high blood sugar because of interferon. And he uses interferon for his stomatitis. If I can get rid of this stomatitis he wont have to use it anymore.
And one of them told me that starting insulin and feeding him twice a day. Otherwise he can not get surgery under Anesthesia.( He has plaques so i want to clean his teeth) . But he told me starting with 2 units of Lantus. I think It's tooomuch huh? I was thinking to start with .25 u... ohmygod_smile
Thank You For your support Guys,
I really dont know what I would do without you ....

Hi, Pallid ~

You're doing a wonderful job caring for Shanga. You've had so much thrown at you with Shanga's other medical conditions along with his wide swings in blood glucose numbers. I admire you for taking charge and getting things figured out.

Pallid, your instinct is good. Starting Shanga on 2 units of Lantus is way too high, in my opinion. Shanga drops into normal numbers on his own, so I'd be really concerned that 2 units would cause a hypo. Let's see what others have to say, but if you're going to start Lantus, then .25U or less seems like the safest dose to try with regular blood glucose testing.

As Julia (Julia and Bandit) has told me, having a dental for your cat can help bring down blood glucose numbers. Hope you're able to get a dental scheduled for Shanga soon.

Thinking of you and Shanga this morning. Hang in there...you're doing great!

Eva

Hello Eva & Butters & 5 Others,

Thank You for your support :) I completely agree with you about insulin dose.
It was a really hard day for me. Shanga's blood sugar was 140 in the morning, then i wanted to wait a bit more to feed him. Waited 3.5 hours and checked his BG.
It was 492...
I went to vet and finally she decided to use insulin. And She gave 2 units of levemir. I told her that he can get normal BG levels after feeding him without insulin. But she gave 2 units and Shanga's Blood sugar is going down fast now.We are home, he doesn't feel good... I am checking his blood sugar every 30 min... I hope he wont get Hypoglycemia... But I'll be ready for my baby ...

I dont know what im gonna to do with vets here...

And talked with the dental vet this morning, he said i needed to get his BG under control with insulin first then he will make the surgery and we'r gonna see...

I am tired, down, but always ready for my baby boy :)...

Thank You everyone :)

Pallid,

How many hours ago did he get the injection? Please monitor every 20-30 mins and post results .

I strongly feel that 2u is WAY too much insulin for Shanga.

Do you have High carb (18% or higher) food in the house? Do you have karo suyrup or honey?

Hi Sandy and Black Kitty,

I prepared everything (honey and water mixed, food, sugar everything ) :(
He is sleeping next to me and checking him every sec.
How do i know if he gets Hypoglycemia suddenly???... I am so sad and can not stop tears...
I am gonna check now again and post...

Thank you ....

We are here to help - you are not alone Pallid.

How many hours have passed since Shanga received the insulin?

How many hours ago Did Shanga last eat?

He got insulin shot at 12.10 pm. Its 67 now...
Feeding him with hills w/d now...

67 is a normal number.

We really need to know -

How many hours have passed since Shanga received the insulin?

How many hours ago Did Shanga last eat?

eta - very important -
feed just a small amount - maybe 1 tsp, and recheck in 20 mins. you must not let him feel full of food.

Sorry I was shocked for a sec and i just send the result...
He got it at 12.10 pm and he got serum for 2 hours.....
Vet didnt feed him there, just gave serum...
When he is back home he didnt want to eat anything....
He ate a bit 1 hour 20 min ago....
He is still eating now....

Whatever time your vet gave insulin is your AMPS. Please start giving us numbers in the +time format like you've been doing and put the information in your subject line. We need to know what Shanga's test was as soon as you got the number and what your test results are from that point on. This could be a very dangerous situation -- or it may not be. Please keep monitoring every 20 - 30 min. like Sandy suggested.

We generally don't mix honey with water. If you should need it, you can add it directly to food. Do not overfeed. If you need to manage numbers, feed only about a teaspoon of food with high carb added to it. Please look at this post on handling low numbers so you will know what to do. (I can't be here for much longer.)

Hello Sienne and Gabby
