Can you leave a syringe filled with coloured liquid as a sample for the teen to see what to do? And practice before hand? 3 units is a nice even amount so should be easy to draw. Worst case, although it's not recommended by the manufacturers, I have seen that it something that diabetic people occasionally need in the community. Eg. a nurse draws for a visually impaired person, or someone who can't draw but can shoot insulin. In those cases, what I've seen recommended is no more than a couple days of syringes preloaded. Store the syringe in the fridge, needle side up, take it out of the fridge 10 minutes or so before shooting to warm up. There is some risk of contamination, but less so if just a short time and needle side up in the fridge.

Not a lot of time to practice, unfortunately, but I'll see what I can do. But also, given what he's been up to today, a skip or two might not be a bad thing, especially overnight, so the teen doesn't have to deal with limes. (I hate to mess up this nice run of greens, but this trip is unavoidable.)
