Tried to do Mugsy's AMPS again this morning but, no luck again - too little blood/too much fight. Afterward he wanted to box me (full fighting stance) followed by ambush attacks. We had to go out so, his AB was late (2 pm instead of 11 am) and I tested at 3pm instead of 2 pm which must have been too close to the AB (1 hr) because his bg was 570! He seems fine (eating good, full of fight, etc) so, I'm not sweating the number. I'll try again later. His head drained a little during the night, again, and the scab is sticking up like he might have been scratching at it. I finally found a spare pair of socks to make a rice bag from and promptly lost the one I wanted to use. I'm using the one with a hole in the toe so, I have to use the heel instead. It doesn't help that my helper is my DH who did a great job his first try but, since then can't seem to understand that he needs to really grab the whole scruff firmly (swiss cheese brain) but, he tries. I'm still trying to convince Mugs that if he would co-operate it would be no worse than his shot is and my DH that he needs to really grip that scruff. You just can't find good help these days!

Hi....I don't think I have posted in your condo before, so welcome.
Bg's are usually not high from an antibiotic but from the infection. Did your vet say anything about Mugsy wearing a cone so that he cannot scratch the wound?

I also had a very hard time testing Putty when he was first dx and it was very stressful for both of us. I would wrap him in a blanket like a burrito. He did not like that very much but I was able to test without too much of a problem. I always gave him a low carb treat after every test. Now all I have to do is point to his testing blanket and he lays down and lets me test. I don't even give him treats anymore.

As you know it is very important to get a test before every shot. I am wondering if the high number today is a rebound number although you don't really have a lot of data to be able to tell.
Do you have any low carb treats like Halo-liv-a-little chicken treats to give while or after you test?

I am sure others will come along with more ideas.

edited to add: I just read your interesting profile.

570 is really high.
At PMPS, if its still high you might want to call your vet for advice.
since Mugsy has had an injury, that could be the reason for the high number.
Alot of vets will give a fast acting insulin to bring it down.

I know you're trying and having a hard time, but IMHO a number like 570 on a cat that has been running in the lower 100's is a sign that you HAVE to get more tests. Yes, infection can contribute to higher numbers, but he had the infection yesterday too and his mid-cycle number was pretty good then. So what makes today's number so different than yesterday's? We can't know for sure, but my best guess is that there is a very good chance that Mugsy went quite low last night and is bouncing now. It's important to remember that most cats run lower at night than during the day, and he was at least in the lower 100s in mid-cycle yesterday.
