Good Afternoon LL,

Leo and i came out to DGP's, he's been itching to go outside, i made plans to hang out with my BFF and Leo's DGpa wanted to see him, he phoned to tell me he missed his grandcat and wanted to know how he's been doing.

This morning i was in such a state of comatose that i barely remember getting up and shooting and feeding Leo, i know i overslept by 45 minutes and Leo finally woke me up by pretty much screaming in my ear...."I'M HUNGRY, GET UP!" I didn't realize that we didn't have any more strips left, until it was after +6.....yikes what a morning that was!

Dr. Andrea finally got me a copy of Leo's blood work from a week ago, its scary for me to look and see the results. Especially his GLDH & ALT, Monday's appointment with the specialist cannot come soon enough. Leo seems fine about the whole thing, he's feeling good and had some outdoor time, loved up his DGpa and given me lots of catitude.

For the life of me i could not attach his blood work as a picture so i saved it as a google document. Please let me know if it doesn't work.

The link says I don't have permission to open the document. Did you set the "share" parameters to "anyone with the link"?

Re: 10/26 Leo AMPS 185, +7 158 & BW results

Ok i changed it to share with anyone with the link, i forgot to set that to begin with! Thanks Sienne. :-D

Sorry -- the print is too tiny for my old eyes! (And I can figure out how to enlarge the page.)

Re: 10/26 Leo AMPS 185, +7 158 & BW results

  oh geez! Sorry but everytime i tried uploading it bigger google docs said it was too big to upload.

I'll just give you an overview of what was high and low.

Chloride result: 107 reference value is 111-125
Urea result 16.8 reference value 6.0-11.4
Glucose 15.1 reference value 3.0-8.1
Cholesterol 6.01 reference value 1.62-4.32
Alk Phos 101 reference value 11-56
ALT 797(!!!!!!) reference value 22-90
GLDH 104 reference value 1-5
Albumin 44 reference value 28-43

This is a mystery to me, if he had liver disease shouldn't his bilrubin be ridiculously high too?? But its completely within normal limits.

Hi Tracy,
I can read the pages just fine. I am using the Safari browser and simply went to "View" and chose "zoom in". But I can't help you because I don't know what those values mean!! I hope that Sienne will get back to you.

Lots of hugs to you and Leo. I'm glad he's feeling good.

Not using Safari with any regularity, I didn't think to use it. I use Firefox and there isn't a zoom function.

Chloride result: 107 reference value is 111-125 – the level is most likely due to vomiting, diuretic therapy, or supplements containing sodium (penicillin, sodium bicarbonate). Hyperventilation is also a cause for lowered chloride. (I don't think this is particularly meaningful since sodium levels are OK.)

Urea result 16.8 reference value 6.0-11.4 -- I can't find anything that reflects urea level by itself. Most labs are for BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and to make sense of the value, you need creatinine values and urine specific gravity.

Glucose 15.1 reference value 3.0-8.1
Cholesterol 6.01 reference value 1.62-4.32 - cholesterol is not a meaningful value. It's usually elevated in cats with diabetes.

Alk Phos 101 reference value 11-56 - This is a liver and bone enzyme that is elevated when there is inflammation of these tissues. Common causes for this elevation are Hepatic Lipidosis (fatty liver disease), Cholangiohepatitis (an auto-immune disease of the liver), liver cancer, Feline Infectious Peritonitis, Hyperthyroidism or Diabetes Mellitus.

ALT 797(!!!!!!) reference value 22-90 - This is an enzyme that is primarily found in liver cells. Any liver problem will result in a high ALT. Common liver diseases that could cause such an elevation include cholangiohepatitis (an auto-immune disease), severe trauma to the liver, lack of oxygen or blood flow to the liver, cirrhosis, acute biliary obstruction (such as a gall bladder stone), cancer, infection, or pancreatitis. Hyperthyroidism should be considered in older cats. There are many drugs that can affect the liver as well, including glucocorticoids, acetaminophen (Tylenol®), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (like Rimadyl® or Metacam®), antifungal medications, methimazole, diazepam, anti-seizure drugs, tetracycline and many chemotherapy drugs.

GLDH 104 reference value 1-5 - indicative of liver damage

Albumin 44 reference value 28-43 – the slightly elevated level may be due to dehydration.

Given that Leo is an outdoor kitty when with your folks, could he have had a trauma that has effected his liver? The other concern would be if he ate something that's toxic. It sounded like your vet is ruling out hyperthyroid and you're waiting for T4 levels. The other problem could be cholangiohepatitis or this may be the residual effect of pancreatitis. There are supplements that may help (e.g., denamarin, milk thistle) if this is, in fact, a liver issue or due to pancreatitis.
