Good morning. Just posted Apollo's AMBG 104.

Oh well, back up into the blues. Looks like the 0.1 units twice a day might be a good idea. Would I still need to monitor him very closely throughout the day on that low of a dose? I'm guessing I will still have to keep an eye on him, but wanted to ask.

Apollo's food intake is still pretty low, maybe one 3oz can a day if that. I am going to keep trying the tricks others have suggested. When he does eat he just mostly licks the top surface of the food and never digs right in to the bottom of the plate. I have tried leaving it more thick, making it soupy, etc, but nothing seems to work. I have tried about 10 different foods and sometimes he eats a bit more, but not much to notice a big difference or anything. Oh well, he seems happy but it still concerns me.

Re: 10/25 Apollo AMBG 104

Good morning! Barely blue this morning. I don't know what to tell you about the dosing. However, you will still have to monitor Apollo as closely if you are giving any insulin. A cat will not hypo if they are not given any insulin, but even a drop can cause a hypo situation. Hopefully someone with more experience will come along with some advice.

Not much help on the food either. 3 oz. isn't a whole lot, but if he is feeling good and not underweight, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Tarragon only eats about 5 - 6 oz a day and is about 2 pounds underweight. However, he feels good on that amount so I don't push it. Tarragon is not a food driven cat AT ALL, so he eats when he wants to and what he wants. He will never be a member of the clean plate club.

Have a wonderful day John!!

Hi guys .. yes a very nice start to the day .. not green, but oh so close! Mocha dropped down into the 30's when she was on .25u so I would definitely monitor, even on .10 .. you just never know I guess .. Good luck with the food situation, I know it can be frustrating when they aren't eating enough .. have a great day guys!

Re: 10/25 Apollo AMBG 104, food question?

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

So for lunch I gave him a new Fancy Feast White Meat Chicken & Flaked Tuna Appetizer. Apollo REALLY took to it and ate about 80% of it in 1 sitting. Here is a link to it:

Fancy Feast White Meat Chicken & Flaked Tuna Appetizer

Now I tried this just to see if I could get him to eat a bit more with a different food. He seemed to like it much better then anything else I have tried in the past. I am not sure if this is low carb enough for him? Also I don't think this is something that I could give him for each meal, correct? The surprising part to me was that even though it was pretty chunky he ate it right up. Knowing that he likes this stuff, anyone have any other food suggestions I can try that are similar to this? I am trying to find something he likes that I can give him as his everyday food. Here is what I have tried this far with mixed results:

Merrick Before Grain Chicken
Merrick Before Grain Tuna
Merrick Cowboy Cookout
Merrick Grammy's Pot Pie
Blue Buffalo Wilderness Chicken
Nature's Variety Instinct Chicken
Nature's Variety Instinct Beef
Nature's Variety Instinct Rabbit
Wellness Chicken
Wellness Beef and Chicken
Wellness Turkey
Wellness Turkey and Salmon
Wellness Chicken and Herring
Friskies Chicken and Tuna Dinner
Friskies Liver and Chicken Dinner
Fancy Feast Classic Chicken Dinner
Fancy Feast Classic Tender Beef and Liver Feast
Fancy Feast Classic Ocean Whitefish and Tuna Feast
Fancy Feast Classic Savory Salmon Feast
Fancy Feast Classic Tender Beef Feast
Fancy Feast Classic Turkey and Giblets Feast

Re: 10/25 Apollo AMBG 104, food question?

The fancy feast appetizers aren't nutritionally balanced, so you wouldn't want to feed them as a primary food. What about trying to mix them in with another food, then put a layer of just the FF appetizer on top?

Yeah I thought the appetizers weren't nutritionally balanced.

Haven't tried to mix them, but might be worth a try. However my cat seems to be good at picking around things he doesn't like, so not sure how well that will work. Definitely worth a try though, if I can't find something he likes that I can use as an everyday food.

Re: 10/25 Apollo AMBG 104, food question?

Actually I mix 1/2 can of FF classic chicken and 1/2 can of the flaked chicken and tuna for every meal.

Re: 10/25 Apollo AMBG 104, food question?

John, you might just try the Pro Plan Chicken and Liver entree. I don't know if Apollo will like it but Morgaine sure did. I had to change her food because she has high triglycerides and it had too much fat but she is was so picky and that did it for her. If you do try it make sure it is the plain chicken and liver. It is made by Purina and is their premium cat food.

I also feed her some FF appetizer every day but just 1/2 tub for a treat. It is very low carb but has no nutrtrients added as you know. Dr. Lisa discusses feeding foods like this and says to not let them be more than 1/5th of the cats total food as they need the added nutrients for health.

KT likes those tubs - he gets one while the other civvies eat their hard food. He doesn't have an eating problem tho' - he can finish off 2 5oz cans of Friskies a day plus the tub....and still maintain his handsome figure...

Thanks for the suggestion. I will add it to the list.

nice.

before you think about giving insulin, how about trying a pancreas test? Just test before you feed, then test again 4 hours after you feed. Ideally the 4 hour post food number will be lower than the number you get before feeding. Can you get a +4 tonight?

Oh wow!
Is it time for this?

Sure I can get a +4, but he didn't eat much at all for his PM feeding. All I have in the house is FF Chicken Classic, which he isn't eating much of these days. Would the +4 number be meaningful, with not much food in him?

I'm going to go to the store tomorrow and pick up some more wet foods to try and see if we can find one he likes better.
