Well our IM vet appointment just got canceled. They had to reschedule, doc is out sick. We have been rescheduled to a 10/31 appointment but they will call if something else opens up sooner....sigh. While I was nervous about the trip I do really want to get her seen soon. Her cough is back in full force. If she tries to purr she starts up. I hope she perks up a little.:( I'll try a brushing session and see if that makes her happy but not purr:blackeye:

Lets talk numbers. While they look good it makes me nervous that the bottom can drop out at any moment. I considered a BCS this morning to drain the depot a bit. I decided against it. Hope I made the right decision. I'm home with her so I can keep an eye out. I prefer some blues and greens...a curve. Not flat greens while on 9 U of insulin. Aye yai yai:facepalm:

Maggie is looking good. She's been surfing along in nice, normal numbers. I hope she keeps surfing for you. Sorry the IM vet appointment got canceled. I hope they can get you in earlier than the 31st.
 
Even Acro kitties can learn to just surf along in green but do understand the preference for a bit more cushion. She did get to 67 which is close to your reduction point. Maybe 8.5 will give you a little more breathing room?

Think you had the coughing looked at not too long ago, or I might be mistaking. Hopefully they can get you in sooner then the 31st.

So I figured since I'm home I'll stick to the hard reduction point of 65. If I had to be out much this week I probably would've gone to 8.5 U for just a little more cushion. She's never surfed in greens before so I was a little nervous but she seems to be holding it.

My regular vet prescribed Orbax twice and with no improvement. Well it was better for a little while but its back again. Wendy had brought up coughing could be a sign of a heart condition, especially in Acros. My gut is telling me she is right. Beenie has been is decent numbers, on Zobaline since July and no improvement with movement/walking. Little to no interest in anything other than meal time. She used to be such a fire cracker. There have been little glimpses of her old self but limited to minutes. She's had a distended abdomen for quite some time which is another symptom. She seems like a sickly cat. I thought it was all FD related but when I read about so many cats running around that have FD and basically acting like normal cats I now know its more than FD affecting Beenie. Was hoping she would improve as her numbers improved but it is always very short lived.
I too hope they can see he before 10/31. The receptionist did say she would talk to the vet and see if they could squeeze her in before that. I explained that I was now a little concerned with the cough again as she's been coughing/wheezing a lot this morning. Yesterday too but today is worse. I may call my regular vet and see if maybe I could give her gaba to relax her and perhaps relax the cough??

An echocardiogram is a good idea. Doodles was not Acro but had advanced HCM and recurring CHF. We hit the max dose of Lasix of 30mg twice a day for the CHF. Doodles was still coughing, but sporadically ....the cardiologist insisted that cats with heart disease don't typically cough. We triple dosed Doodles with Lasix from time to time. In the end on top of the HCM/ CHF it was concluded Asthma was the coughing culprit. Asthma can be difficult to diagnose but believe you have experience with it.

Sorry to hear the movement/ walking hasn't improved much. It took Doodles 6 months to recover from the neuropathy. I also use to lift Doodles up onto low furniture, and assist him jumping down. Would move him around the house a bit so he'd have to move around (as hard as it was to look at). The goal was to help build his muscles...other wise he'd just lay around in one area. Acupuncture was on board too like Beenie. Sending mega vines and prayers Beenie improves soon.

I think it's a good idea especially if you're home. The good thing is when they are flat green there's really not a big drop involved when they ask for the reducie:)

Bummer on the sick vetty and appointment cancellation. :arghh: Hope you get in sooner. If you haven't already, I would try videoing her cough (and walking) on your phone/tablet. I found that Neko seldom performed for the vet and the video really helped the doc see what I was talking about. For mobility, I would also get the doc to check out any possible arthritis. It's quite common for acros. Neko never got neuropathy and started out cruising the counter tops for food, but over time became mostly a floor dweller. :(

A pot belly is a sign of acro by itself too. Again, ECID, Neko didn't have much of a pot. Course, with her long hair - who could tell.

It's good to gather data on green surfs. Hope Beenie just cruises along today. Her 9.5U depot should be gone by now, so a depot drainer wouldn't have helped.

That sounds like a good idea! The only time she gets around is to go upstairs to see if the civvies ate their food otherwise she's always there to help out:rolleyes:

Yes I don't want the good numbers to slip away. I guess I have in the back of my head if she drops she'll drop like 40 points and there's no room for that starting in the 70's and 80's. Makes sense that they won't drop that much when already at low numbers. That was my fear so that makes me feel better. Thanks

:)Did it this morning!! I think its important they hear and God knows she won't make a peep in the office. I will discuss arthritis with IM vet too. Regular vet deemed, based on xrays, there was some arthritis but nothing unusual for a cat her age. Not sure if that means do nothing about it... I plan on revisiting Acupuncture regardless once I get Beenie accustomed to travel. I used to have her on Dasuquin but stopped when we got the FD dx. Wonder if I should re-introduce it?

Cough has subsided so that is a relief.

Poor Beenie. Tiff did have a URI awhile ago and it helped to hold her in a steamy bathroom for as long as we both could stand it. (Wendy's suggestion) Antibiotics took care of it, but only after the vet checked out her heart. I hope her cough gets better. Acro definitely stinks!!!!

I know. I was shocked that I even got an appointment today anyway so waiting a week or less was more what I was expecting when I called yesterday. They seemed very eager to try and get me in sooner so it very well may happen. Thanks!

Thanks Jadi:) Will try that steam room idea out once we get her checked out. My regular vet had listened to her lungs while this was still an issue and her lungs are clear so not sure what it is but he felt it all stemmed from the sinus area. Acro really does stink:confused:

I used Cosequin (or the equivalent) for quite a while, before it wasn't good enough. It didn't impact Neko's numbers, so you should be fine to add it. Not sure about Dasuquin - I remember somewhere that the soybean in it wasn't so good for cats. But don't quote me on that. Fish oil (if she's not allergic) can also help with inflammation.
 
Chin scritches back for Beenie :), sorry the appointment was re-booked, I think we were all hopeful to hear some good feedback...good vines in the meantime to get that cough cleared up, sometimes I wish the kitties could just tell us how they are feeling.
 
I was going to mention cosequin / adequan as well, but looks like Wendy beat me to it. Jack had a noticeable improvement on cosequin. It is cheap and OTC, I get mine on amazon. Adequan is prescription and more expensive. I know Lizzie uses adequan on Gizmo.

I can completely relate, your description of Beenie sounds a lot like Jack. He just isn't that spunky little spitfire that I will always remember him as and his belly is getting pretty big too.

Nice to see a good surf today. It still feels weird shooting low numbers and seeing them just surf along compared to shooting high numbers and watching them drop like a rock.

Hope you can get some answers on the cough and see the IM vet soon.

Thanks Wes. I'm going to talk to the IM about both. From what I read the Adequan is an injection. If it works better I may go that route providing the vet lets me give the injections. Not going to drag Beenie to the vet for a shot. I've got experience in that departmento_O.

Yup just takes getting used to I suppose. I already feel more comfortable tonight than I did this morning. I may not need to set so may alarms tonight:)

It is so hard. Just hoping to get her to a better state/comfort level. I think we'll get to see some improvement. I'm sorry that Jack has been having LB issues. I hope you find a solution for him and you. Maybe straight up wee wee pads and no litter box?? Do cats even know how to do that? Sending healing vines your wayvibes.gif
 
Sorry about the vet visit, and the cough being worse - sending good thoughts to you and Beenie! Did the vet happen to check a heartworm test? It's not very common in kitties (they're an atypical host), but we did see one at our clinic that had a chronic cough that we thought was heart-related and he ended up being heartworm positive. It can, in some cases, cause difficulty walking...
