Good Morning LL! Shed filling time again. :YMSIGH: Things should be back on track soon, but I knew I should have waited until +4 to test. ohmygod_smile

The food wars continue. Tess is still liking the Before Grains, however I had not checked the calories, only 135kcal/can beef, 151kcal/can turkey. As most cats need 20 to 30 kcal/pound depending on activity, Tess, at just under 8.5 lbs, needs 170kcal. to 255kcal a day. I could feed her more, but it is already hard to get her to eat 5oz let alone another 1.5oz. That would be 3 more mini meals! Sometimes it seems like we spend the whole day trying to get her to eat.

I've spent the morning checking food charts, the most calories for the smallest volume of food and low phos. I checked out, egg whites but for enough calories she would need to eat nearly 3 large egg whites! I think the answer is butter! 1/2 TBS has 50kcal, only 1.65mg phos and no carbs. Big plus is Tess loves butter!! She always tries to kick the knife and I have to be careful there is no jam on it. Any opinions on this idea?

We had a good day in SB and since we didn't shoot we took our time getting home. Then we were all ready for naps.

Re: 10/23 Tess AMPS~376 +3~415 butter!??

I've no input except that butter is a Binksy guilty pleasure as well...and it seems it would possibly ease furball issues as well...

be interested to see what folks advise!

Re: 10/23 Tess AMPS~376 +3~415 butter!??

Calories for our furbabies is an interesting and challenging issue.

Sid who weights 8 lbs 10 oz. eats about 150 calories a day. She doesn't want any more and her weight stays the same. She's not underweight.

Curry weights 9 lbs 14oz eats a little less and doesn't seem to want any more. Curry is very inactive and Sid is much more active.

All the information I read tells me the girls should be getting more food but they really don't want it. And their weight remains the same.

Dr. Lisa also said to see how much the kitty eats and maintains the weight.....that just might be their set point in terms of calories needed if they aren't underweight.

Is she underweight or overweight?

No expert advice here......but .....Ummmmm butter, everything tastes better w/butter.

Re: 10/23 Tess AMPS~376 +3~415 butter!??

I wish I had an answer for you. My only thought is that if Tess doesn't have a cholesterol problem, this might be something you can do. I image it would be great for hairballs if she ever has a problem with that.

I sure hope that increase kicks in soon...no one likes to see numbers like that. ohmygod_smile

Re: 10/23 Tess AMPS~376 +3~415 butter!??

hmmm...
i've heard of some adding unsalted butter or the fat from low sodium bacon to cat food when a kitty is underweight. although, i don't have any hands-on experience. we've always been in weight loss/maintenance mode with alex.

however, check this out: http://catinfo.org/?link=makingcatfood#The_Ingredients

when making raw food, Dr. Lisa mentions "adding bacon fat to individual meals to give my cats a variety in flavor and to also increase the fat content (and therefore the caloric density) since one of my cats is older and a bit on the thin side."

"I baked 18 ounces of the fattiest bacon I could find and it yielded 16 TBS of fat. I used a broiling pan to catch the drippings. Cook it slowly until the bacon is dry and crispy. That way, you will collect the most fat from the bacon. The dried bacon makes nice bacon bits for non-vegetarians. Or you can feed them to your cats as treats. Nitrites in cured meats is a controversial subject so I opted to purchase nitrite-free bacon from Whole Foods Market."

Re: 10/23 Tess AMPS~376 +3~415 +6~298 butter!??

YAY!!! out of the reds and skipped the pinks! :-D :-D :-D Not too fast though little girl.

Tena, Tess is used to getting 200 calories a day, more than the minimum for her weight, and she has been maintaining right around 8.5 pounds . She looks about the right weight, vet says she is good. It's just that the Before Grains is such a drop in calories compared to the volume of food. I don't want her to lose weight.

Jill, thanks, I hadn't thought about bacon fat, I'm sure she would love that too. We can get nitrite free bacon at Trader Joe's too. :-D I checkout the values on http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/pork-products/7358/2 Kewl site, you can get all the nurtient info you want.

Patty, we don't have an increase, I had to skip yesterday because Tess was AMPS 68 and we were going to be gone for 8 hours. Once i got the 143 on the out the door number i wished that I had shot though. Tess's cholesterol has actually been good and dropped a little on this last test.

OT: The bacon after getting the fat out would be great for hot bacon dressing! We replace the bacon fat in the recipe w/ olive oil and saute bacon bits in it to release the flavor. Much healthier! And just as yummy!

Re: 10/23 Tess AMPS~376 +3~415 +6~298 butter!??

My kitters metabolism must be really slooooooooooooooow. I need to send them to your home.

And you are right about the large volume of Merrick's food and low caloric content. Certainly not as dense as some of the others.

Isn't raw food a bit more bang for the buck in terms of calories? I remember reading in one of your condo's about the high phos content in TC feline. I had just bought a package of the pre-mix....now I'm gonna toss it. While Curry doesn't have any kidney issues now, I'd rather have her eating the foods w/less phos. Thanks for that information.

Interesting information on the bacon. And Celi is right....its making me hungry just thinking about it.

Re: 10/23 Tess AMPS~376 PMPS~286 butter!??

Ann, our custom recipe from Dr. Lisa includes butter. It does help keep things moving, so to speak, and Willie tolerates it very well. Because I won't feed raw organ meat (generally liver), I lightly sautee the liver in the butter, then puree it all together in the mini chopper attachment to my stick blender (food processor or blender would work too) so that it is easier to blend into the meat (once it has cooled a bit). I know she included it because we are using venison, which is a very lean meat, and she wanted to ensure that he was getting an appropriate amount of fat in his diet. We also add fish oil, which provides another fat source.

Good luck!

ETA: ooooohhhhh.......hot bacon dresssssssiiiiiinnnnnnggggggg.......... If we had a drool smiley, I'd so be using it right now!!

Re: 10/23 Tess AMPS~376 PMPS~286 butter!??

At least we are out of that color! But no way I'm taking a chance of seeing it again. No more tests until at least +4 ………………… and if I keep on getting distracted it will be +4 by thentime i finish this.

Thanks Christie, that's what I was thinking. There are trade offs for both butter and bacon fat and we may just change it up. I've seen butter in other raw recipes, too.

Tena, we will be getting back to raw, But I want some other options ready too.
