Yesterday
Morning! Shadow has 4 Ps today after a large and stinky LB deposit. He ate this morning after his Carafate and now I am getting ready for the Pepcid and then lunch in an hour or so. He has been acting fine and no vomiting (since sometime Saturday night) His appetite wasn't all that great last night at +8...I syringed a bit of liquid mixed with food into him and left a couple of food choices out but nothing was touched when I got up this morning.

We did not get prednisone ....no.... I guess it masks the symptoms though...so I am glad to not have used it too. I appreciate your input that it might take 2 - 3 weeks until he feels better.....that's good to know. He is such a good boy and seems to be fine now. But he wasn't really acting "sick" except for the vomiting and the anorexia.

My vet charges about $125.00 for the EPI test...the Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency test. They opt to give the enzymes right away instead of doing the test. From what she said and from what I have read also, diabetic cats are prone to having pancreases that are scarred or not producing enought enzymes to digest the commercially prepared foods. If they were eating whole prey from the wild, they would be eating the pancreases too....but older cats, particulary diabetic cats usually do not produce enough ensymes to digest their food for the proper nutrition.

I orderd the pancrea powder...which is a prescription supplement. It contains pork enzymes whereas the cheaper stuff available without a prescription are plant based and not as effective. I don't expect to "see" anything dramatic....likewise with the Denamarin that you suggested. Supplements do their work behind the scenes and usually prevent other things without us even being totally aware of the work they are doing.
I am guessing that since my two are 15 and have had diabetes for 3 years, they could use some help with both the Denamarin and the Pancrea Powder.

Glad that Shadow puking has subsided. I hope it stays that way.

Sounds like your day is very busy administering one medication after another and then feeding and testing and worrying.

More hugs from us too, we're glad that Shadow is feeling a little better and eating. It is nerve wracking when they don't.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize the EPI test was so expensive so it makes sense that you'd just want to give the enzymes. They won't hurt and the cost is less than the test.

Hope he continues to feel better.
