Last Time at Tricia's House of Chaos
I tried to do a late night condo yesterday (kind of like this), but the Board was down, so no joy.
Today has been the day from Hell. It started with a phone call from UCD. The results from Harvey's Fructosamine test were in - 483, which was higher than the last one they did several months ago. The student said they like to see it under 450, and ideal is under 400. She said they weren't ready to declare him diabetic yet, and they want me to get a urine glucose test at home. That should be fun. So I'll be spending tomorrow following him around with a test strip....
Why didn't I do that today?? Funny you should ask...
A short time later I was looking up some carb %s on my printout of Dr. Lisa's list. I keep it in a folder with a bunch of other info - e-mails and charts and letters from cat food companies. I saw Cinco head towards the bar and thought I'd see if I could get a strip in his urine to test again for possible infection. As I got closer I saw he was peeing on the pee pad again!
I threw the folder down on the nearest surface and dived for the strips, but suddenly I realized the surface I had thrown the folder on was actually the dish pan that we use to warm Minka's fluids, and it was full of water!!!!

I yanked it out, but 95% of what was in there was ruined.
I salvaged what I could, then took a strip to the wet pee pad. Yup, protein and Leukocytes. I called the vet's office and they said they could take us any time after 2. It was almost 1, so I said 3:30. I still had to do Minka's fluids and get dressed, and it's a 1.25 hour drive.
At some point this morning, I got the brilliant idea to remove the bandage from Cinco's leg. It had been there for a week and I wanted to see how the area he'd been licking looked. It didn't look worse than when I had bandaged it, but it didn't look better, either. I figured it needed some air, and since he hadn't messed with the bandage, I thought it'd be okay. An hour later, the shaved area looked like fresh ground hamburger.
I rebandaged it.
Everything took longer than I expected and traffic was AWFUL, so we were 30 minutes late, but they're used to me, so they didn't bat an eye. I had gotten my car washed and cleaned out a couple days ago, so I didn't want to let Cinco roam free. He wasn't happy riding in the carrier the whole way. The vet thinks it could be a UTI, but she is also wondering about kidney disease. She said when a cat is HyperT it can mask the symptoms of CKD, and when they are put on the meds, the disease is "unmasked". They took blood and urine, will run a T4, but not a Fructosamine - she wants me to fax her his BGs from the last week or so. As I was returning him to the carrier, he decided he needed to poop. Now.
How embarrassing! The vet didn't miss a beat - she grabbed paper towels and I grabbed a pee pad from the carrier and we cleaned it up. Too bad they didn't need a stool sample from him!
Cinco's numbers are sooo much better lately, and I'm really happy about that - he's glad to be back on duty in the lagoon and hanging with his friends. (We're going to ignore last night's bounce.) I just wish he'd quit peeing outside the box! I came home with Clavamox - she wants me to start him on it, not only in case it is a UTI, but because he did such a number on that leg and she's concerned about infection there. I gave the okay for them to do a culture, too.
Minka's appy was pretty poor this morning, but she ate a little of the Weruva she liked yesterday, and some baby food with her fluids. Tonight she's had more of the Weruva. I'm about to do her evening fluids and meds. Every time I think I should take her to the vet, she starts eating.
Sasha did her "not a morning person" thing, eating little of her breakfast but CPC on her dinner. She's had snacks, too. Harvey's Hoover is set on overdrive. He drove me crazy for a couple of hours after dinner, but I think I finally got him filled up.
Sorry for the novel, but I had a lot to get off my chest. I will confess I was this || close to a meltdown this morning when I dunked my folder, right after the news about Harvey and seeing Cinco peeing on the pad again, but I somehow made it through the day. Adult beverage is in hand. Tomorrow is litter changing day, so a lot to look forward to!

We are still thinking of Ann and John and our dear little Tess.
There's a trampoline on the coast of California that's missing it's little bouncing buddy....
