A better reading this morning!

Thanks for the kudos everyone!
I'm not so sure anymore Calistica is moving around because she wants her treat! I gave her some today before the prick and she just kept moving!

Thanks so much everyone for explaining the group's slang! We are mami (Spanish for mommy) and papi (Spanish for daddy) to Calistica since we don't have kids! Did I tell you Calistica is trilingual? She can speak feline, English and Spanish! :-D

I am going to order some of those 1/2 unit syringes. I know we will need them! Thanks for the links Ella!

Hi Lyresa, about the vein, I'm pretty sure the vet said I could around the perimeter of the ear which is what I'm doing. She said hit the vein. I asked what about if I don't hit the vein? She said that would be OK.

Dr. Lisa P. shows the vein here and she points to a little spot on the left part of the ear.

Sometimes I aim for that little spot but I'm doing more like step 5 on this site

You will be aiming for the upper outer edge of the ear (anywhere from midpoint to 3/4 of the way to the tip).

Calistica's left ear is black so forget about finding the vein! But we will try to stay away from the vein. It is hard to see where the lancet will end up at though.

Mares, I hope the acne shampoo helps Missy. I hope your little girl feels better soon. Are you sure she is not in pain?
I do have lupus but thankfully "the annoying" kind as my rheumy calls it. My numbers are pretty close to normal range and my doctor says that some people would not consider me a lupus patient. I am also a lucky one!
When I went to the local pet store there were a lot of dog treats that could be used for cats too but wasn't sure I wanted to try them.
I just ordered two bottles of the Halo treats from Swanson. Kitty crack!  PURRFECT!

The crunching kindda helped but I hadn't warmed up the ear well so I had to poke her a second time and then she was moving around.
Did you ask the vet about the Muricin acne ointment?
Excellent point about plastic not being good for acne! I'll switch to these stainless steel dishes I have for her which I never use because they are too shallow. They will be perfect for kitty crack though!

Thanks again everyone and have a great weekend!
Sending your babies lots of prayers and healing energy

Hi Thelma,

Welcome to lantus land. You and your DH are doing a great job with Calistica and I am glad you are here. You are in good hands. After awhile you won't need to warm Calistica's ear anymore to home test. It will become easier and easier. And you may be surprised that he goes to the test spot to be tested after awhile. If he knows he will get something to eat after you test he might oblige. Many cats do that here.

Keep up the good work and have a nice weekend.

Re: 10/22 Calistica's AMPS 249

Thanks for the warm welcome Jan. Calistica always has always come to the area that has become her test spot. That is where she waits for food in the kitchen. So far she continues to do that which is a good thing. I do hope this becomes easy because instead of easier she making it harder as now she moves too much!

Re: 10/22 Calistica's AMPS 249

Good morning, guys! A lovely start for Calistica today with the promise of some blues later today! Willie isn't particularly difficult, but he is squirmy, so we do our pokes and shots on my lap... allows me to leverage one hand around him which helps to keep him still! Hope your weekend is off to a great start!!

Re: 10/22 Calistica's AMPS 249

Good morning Christie and Willie! Calistica is a calico and it's very rare that she stays still but I could try her on my lap although the only lap that she really loves is daddy's lap. That technique may be better for him. I almost think he could poke her ears while she sleeps if she were napping on his lap.
Have a great weekend yourself!

Re: 10/22 Calistica's AMPS 249

Thelma,
Don't know if this is a possibility, but when I test Missy, I kneel over her, she's tucked in between my legs. Then I can bend over and pet and sweet-talk her while I am giving her the 'treaties' and warming her ear. Maybe she wouldn't go for that if she is squirmy, though.
I will talk to the vet about that Muricin. I did some reading on it and I am going to try witch hazel, too. (I'll try anything to get rid of this) I think I am going to mention Retin A, too. I read that is sometimes used.
I don't think she is in pain...And she seems livelier today and she is in the yellows, so I think it is the FD. She has been in the pinks way too much lately. She's sleeping on her nanner right now  . Her picture doesn't show it very well, but she is a calico, too. She doesn't have nearly as much white as your baby, though. She has such a pretty face. She's trilingual cuz she tricolored! ;-)
Have a great weekend....

Re: 10/22 Calistica's AMPS 249

Mares, don't you think the witch hazel stuff would sting? Isn't that stuff like alcohol? I can't wait till you get that shampoo for Missy!
I'm always kneeling behind Calistica. the first time I was sitting on the floor with my legs stretched out and she was between my legs. She did well then. Maybe I'll try that again. I think the kneeling position is better for me.

I'm concerned about the curve tomorrow because of her feeding schedule. I've read people recommending to feed most of the cat's food by +5. Calistica eats every 3 hours between shots during the day: 5AM (shot time), 8AM, 11AM and 2PM. Her shots are at 5AM/PM
tomorrow we have to test her every 2 hours between 5AM and 5PM so we will modify her feeding schedule so she hasn't eaten 2 hours before the test.
Tests will be done at 5AM, 7AM, 9AM, 11AM, 1PM, 3PM and 5PM

So I think we will feed her after her tests at 5AM, 9AM, 11AM, 3PM. She won't be a happy camper about having to wait 4 hours between meals!

Re: 10/22 Calistica's AMPS 249

Thelma, you are continuing to do an amazing job as a newbie. My calico, Cleo, does not like to sit still either. When I have to give her meds, I put her between my legs to stabilize her somewhat. I'm not sure that will help with Calistica, especially if she is a head flinger. Simon does that and I have to hold his ear really tight. I also put my legs around his body and give him lots of nice pets before the test. I also sing a song to him during the test. It is the same song every time so I think it helps calm him a little and he knows that once the song is over he is finished with his testing and gets a treat. The song I sing is "You are my Sunshine" but I change the words around and I sing "You are my Simon". I know that sounds pretty hokey, but Simon likes it! When I give Cleo her sub-q fluids, I play quiet music in the background which also calms her. As they say, "music soothes the savage beast"! Have a great weekend!

Re: 10/22 Calistica's AMPS 249

Thank you Georgia! Calistica has turned into a head flinger for sure! Maybe I'm not as relaxed as I think I am about doing this. I'm not talking to her or petting her while I prick her ear. I am fully focused on the pricking task so I may be tense. I need to start talking to her and possibly damaging her hearing with my singing!

Calistica's PMPS was 166!!! Can you guys believe it! We were all so excited celebrating this number. My aunts are visiting with us and they know how much Calistica means to us and they joined in the celebration. I hope these good numbers continue!
Thank you all for your help!

Alright!! We celebrate with you too!!

I test KT up on top of a short bookcase and soon to be on my new desk. I find it MUCH more comfortable to have him higher where I can move where I need to move. When I'm on the floor, it restricts the movements I can make so his ear has to do more 'gymnastics' - him don't like that....

What a nice day for Calistica and great shooting on that 166. I would suggest you be sure and get a +1 and +2 if this is the lowest you have shot.

You are really doing a great job learning, Thelma, and it will continue to get easier for you both. I really would advise staying away from the vein. One...it hurts to poke there and two...way too much blood which she'll probably flick her ear and send it everywhere!

Hope your girl has a nice cycle tonight!!

Thanks Larisa and Marjorie,
I've also favor a higher spot but I'm so afraid Calistica would jump off the counter and seriously hurt herself. This is an 18 year old cat who recently dislocated a hi. OK. I just checked her at +1 and she was 192. She's still blue! We'll test her again at +2
Are there lancet pens that more like a real pen? That is the kind I need because the relion one I have is too wide and I don't know where the lancet is going to hit. I wonder if I've hit the vein because I sometimes get a big fat drop on the cotton ball I press against the ear.
Thank you!
