Yesterday
Morning. I awoke to a very vocal busy boy this morning. He was literally screaming for food. I noticed that there was vomit in the computer room so that happened sometime during the night, possibly after the 4 am snack. He had the Mirtz (Meowzapine some folks call it cuz it can make them vocalize a lot) last night at 11:30 pm. He had Pepcid too. I then gave some Bupe at 1:15am...and he ate for both the midnight and 4am snack times.
We are not used to all these meds and I am wondering about the timing of the administration of some of them. He is pretty good about it all but still, I am getting annoying to even myself so I can oonly imagine what he is thinking. We had some Carafate this morning before breffis. Hoping that coats his stomach every 12 hours. I gave him an offering of some LC FF and then another dish of Baby food ham....he licked the ham and sniffed the LC. Then, out of desparation since he was crying, i opened a puch of Wellness healthy Indulgence duck & shrimp and he enjoyed that...ate like a pig. I hope the rush won't cause him to vomit, but so far, it has stayed down as we approach the bewitching 2 hours-after-breffis-vomiting-time. sigh.
Carolyn had mentioned the "novel protein" so I have that in the back of my mind for the duck.
Will be looking around for some venison and some duck and oh, maybe some mouse meat or cricket stew.
ohmygod_smile Yep, am loosing it folks! But the "novel protein" does make sense to me so I will be searching for different stuff that he will eat. This stuff this morning is probably really high in carbs...will try to search trhough that new mixed up list of foods to find it if I can. I don't have a lot of patience lately it seems.

I did get Denamarin tablets for both of them but need to give that an hour before eating....haven't tried it yet. I am giving Raja Clindamyacin for her gingivitis and we are having a horrible time of it...with her hating the taste and being very dramatic about the atrocity. I would like to get them both on it once Shadow's eating is a bit more consistent.(Denamarin is SAMe and Silybin which is mild thistle) Nutritional support, I am also awaiting the vet office to get in the smaller bottle of pancreatic enzymes for my two in hopes that it will help with their digestion.)

So, his beautiufl numbers are out the window with the insulin dose we have settled on. I don't want to push it too much and cause him to go into really low greens where i have to syringe HC gravy. I am not sure that the possible vomiting from that is worth the risk and yet I don't like seeing him in the pinks. I thought temporarily it would be okay and so did the vet....while he is not eating all that well.
Sorry, this is so long.... (He is now back at the breffis bowls, eating a little more FF LC chopped grill....)

Been reading a lot about all these different meds and learning more than I wanted to know.
Hats off to all of you who are dealing with medicating your furbabies for various conditions. For those of you who are fighting the battles of all the different conditions that can arise and for those of you who have done so in the past, i admire your valiant efforts.

I have always been very thankful for the good health we three have experienced in the past. And as we face pancreatitis for the first time I again realize that you all have been there, done this and are dealing with even worse issues. Thanks to you all for your help and support, for your loving hugs and for your knowledge that you share so freely....we appreciate it so very much!

The good news is that the duck & shrimp pouch is 11% carb -- probably higher in carbs than what you usually feed but not awful. Is Shadow eating without benefit of the mirtz?

Yes....he IS eating in between. This was our second dose of it since it is to be given every three days..
This morning he went back two different times for food....Mirtz was given just about 12 hours ago...

He was enthused about the babyfood ham at first, then the baby food turkey. I think he is interested in new flavors of foods now instead of the old boring fare he usually gets...

I would go easy on the ham. A friend of mine reminded me that her cat developed crystals when they fed ham. If he's eating on his own, I'd see how he's doing in 3 days and if he keeps up eating on his own, see if he'll continue without the mirtz. You can always re-start it if you need to.

Thanks Sienne....he seems to have weaned himself off the ham pretty quickly, eating a lot of it at first taste the other day and then finaly only a lick this morning. I am not happy feeding baby food to begin with, but I figured I'd try it when you mentioned it...anything to get him to eat. It seemed to jump start his appetite and he would go over to the regular LC after eating the baby food. So, mission accomplished for those feedings!
I wonder why they don't usually make pork for cats...have you ever noticed any flavors of it? Or Lamb?
I don't eat pork myself any more so the ham baby food was sickening to me...LOL....but it worked for him over the past couple of days...

They say the mirtazapine has some anti-nausea effects too so I figured I should give it to him for the second dose. I will be back in touch tomorrow with my vet....they asked me to call with his status over the weekend and leave a message for them.

'Morning Pat. Very interesting condo and observations this morning.

Just for the record, bupe makes Checkers hungry.
A short time after a dose, he sleeps for couple hours, then wakes hungry. Every time.

Scritches to Shadow cat_pet_icon

I hope you're taking care of yourself too. :YMHUG:

Thanks Barb. It seems that each medication can have multiple effects. He is getting a smaller dose now of the bupe and I only gave it to him because they say that one cannot always tell if a kitty is in pain. But, pancreatitis can be very painful...or not. sigh. Interesting that you noticed that with Checkers...and I sure will look for that over the next few days with Shadow...thank you!!

Hi Pat, thank for visiting and cheering Maggie with all you have going on with Shadow. I remember the Mirtz did make my GA Siamese very vocal, and he was already vocal w/out the Mirtz. It sure does help their appy. You are doing a great job with Shadow. It's not easy with so many meds when they've not had to use them in the past. I know with the bf; you hate to use it too much but if it helps in the meantime. I use it mainly to sneak in some Miralax with Maggie. Sometimes you have to work with the medical issue and meds and the numbers do get higher than we like. Sending many healing vines to sweet Shadow and hugs to you.

I hope the Carafate does the trick - it seemed to work well for Muffin. As far as giving the Denamarin, I give it mid afternoon, during the time Muffin doesn't normally eat anyway. 2 hours after eating and 1 hour before eating, so if there's a time of day when Shadow goes 3 hours without eating anyway, maybe you could give it then. I give her a few bites of turkey afterwards, as a treat and to make sure it goes all the way down. I know all this is stressful, Pat, so strength vines to you and lots of hugs. You're doing great!

Hi Pat,
It must seem to you that you are running your own clinic!! Everything you are doing for Shadow will really help him get over this pancreatitis. I'm sure. Just try to take everything in stride. If something doesn't work, you don't have to keep doing that one. EVO makes both venison and duck (5.5 oz. cans). Rusty didn't care for the duck (haven't tried him on the venison), but Stu liked both of these, particularly the venison. Hang in there and act like it is all part of a normal day so that Shadow will think so too!!

Lots of hugs from us,

Ella & Rusty

p.s. I'm surprised that you wouldn't want to go canoeing in 41-degree weather and drizzle! (We are hoping for a change in the weather by tomorrow, as was forecasted.)

HI Pat-
Just thought I would pop in and say thanks for wishing us well at the falls. Definitely an amazingly wonderful day for us.

sounds like you have lots going on with your furbabies. Wishing them well.

Karen
