Libby --
I'm likewise sorry if no one was around to answer your question or lend a hand. Do you shoot at around noon/midnight? If you need help, please change your subject line in the first post in your condo AND post a new note, even if it's a "bump" in order to move your condo to the top of the Board. Just changing a subject line doesn't move the condo to the top of the Board.
To answer your question, cats do indeed get asthma. You should get Callie checked by your vet. Usually, x-rays are needed. I'd suggest videotaping an episode of what you think is asthma so your vet can see and hear what you are noticing since chances are, Callie won't do this at the vet's office.
Callie hasn't had green pre-shot numbers and not such a low green pre-shot before. I'd suggest you print out this post from Libby regarding how to handle
low pre-shot numbers. You did a great job. It is very anxiety provoking to have greens for the first time. If someone had seen your condo, chances are they'd have stayed with you to make sure you got through the fundamentals for the first time. Here are some general guidelines should you be hanging out by yourself given the late hour. Surfing in the 50s is safe and a good place for Callie to be. A little bit of LC may bump up the numbers a little and make you more comfortable. I would have also tested every 30 min. just in case numbers dropped lower.
If your cat is testing in low numbers and you are not getting a quick response to your post, there are several things you need to do. (Low numbers are BG under 50.)
• Depending on how carbohydrate sensitive your cat is, feed approximately a teaspoon or less of food with HC or HC food only.
• Test again in 15 – 20 min. Depending on where the numbers are, give more HC food.
• Repeat the above steps every 15 – 20 min. until your cat tests in the 50 or above range for 2 consecutive tests. Continue to feed in small
amounts to keep numbers in a safe range.
• Test in 30 min. and repeat the test and feed process until there are 2 consecutive tests where numbers are stable or rising.
• Test in an hour and follow the same steps.
DO NOT become complacent. If numbers have risen after one or two tests, it’s important to continue testing. Numbers may bobble up and down as the HC food and/or Karo wears off. DO NOT get one test where your cat has risen from low numbers into the 50s and go to sleep. You are leaving your cat in a risky situation. When in doubt, leave HC food out. A better strategy is to follow the steps outlined above.
