claudia this charlie is one tough cookie to bring down. i want to double check EVERTHING.
insulin handled correctly? using correct syringes? know how to use them? nothing expired? ummm, food? this is not calling you out for anything...just a double check on any possible flaws in the system. have you checked your gluc. on yourself? to check it's accuracy?
if all of the above are in good order...and no blue's in the next day (24 hours) time to up to 3.25
in the effort to prevent ketones, and organ damage.

Check on all of that, except checking on myself. I'll do that today. Otherwise everything is as it should be. It's weird that the switch to wet food apparently did little or nothing for his numbers, but I guess that's the old adage ECID.

+6:318. Ugggghhhhhhhhh. It's been an hour and a half since lunch. I'll test again at +8. I should run a full curve one of these days....Maybe tomorrow. I'd like to figure out exactly how long his food spikes last, and spot-checking just doesn't give enough info.

CLAUDIA NO!!!! do not go there about the food. this is one area where ECID does NOT hold water. would you like to chat on the phone for a few. not about dosing folks--not to worry. i want to check on other things.
i can pm you my # or you pm me yours with a good time to call k?

I clarified this to Lori, just wanted to clarify for anyone else reading this... I completely agree that wet food is best for a diabetic cat, and I will continue to feed an all-wet diet. I just meant that it didn't seem to have any big effect on charlie's numbers. Just so there's no misunderstanding!

Just tested at +8 with both meters and I'm more confused than ever.
Truetrack:389
Freestyle lite:320 (using since oct.11)
This makes me wonder if all the "improvement" I've seen lately was actually just a different meter reading the bgs differently. I will look back at his ss to see if that correlates. I will test me with both to see which seems more accurate. If it's the freestyle, I will need to order the test strips online cuz the price for them at the drugstore will break our budget which is literally strained to the limit right now.

claudia let me know asap if you get a test from yourself k?

I read on human diabetes sites that meters can't handle lots of bg tests in quick succession, so I'm giving them a break, but will test before dinner (1 hour from now probably).

also did you test both with the same drop of blood. if not the 1st test is more to be trusted....unless you used 2 different ears. 2 pokies on one ear moments apart will add all sorts of wb cells and other stuff to that blood stream area. oye vey...all these variables!

2 tests should'nt overtax your meter...but if you want to wait. i'm dying of curiosity.

I chickened out and tested dh instead. He just had a beer, so a bit high...
Freestyle:131
Rite aid:125
What am I supposed to make of this???!!?!

I know they have like a 20%margin of error, but I wouldve bet money that thereue track meter was going to read higher on dh than the freestyle. Any thoughts?

well FWIW i discovered that contour is higher by about 30 points compared to 3 of my other meters on the same drop of blood EXCEPT when the numbers were low, like 130 and down from there the numbers of ALL the meters were close within a few points.
higher numbers seems to be where the inconsistency begins...so much for testing on you guys with the low numbers.

103 vs 113 is well within a 20 % margin of error, which would be 20 points on a bg of 100.

As the numbers rise, 20 % is a bigger margin of error. for example 20% of 300 is 60 points. so a reading of 300 could really be like 270-330.

its smart to remember every reading you take is not necessarily 100% accurate and view it in general terms

You need to look at the forest, the big picture of the trends rather than the individual trees.

and if money is tight I would ask Lori to send you a Maxima. The strips are the cheapest and it pretty reliable. Available from Hocks

Thanks guys. I x-posted on health for input there too and heard more of the same. I see what you mean about the margin of error. I guess I'll stick with the freestyle. Is the true track good enough to use in the newbie kits, Lori?

if your thinking of donating it claudia, at this point i am trying to only take meters that come with strips...at least 20. i have meters without strips and am using up $$ fast trying to match up strips to meters.
sooooo, if you have both that's wonderful
if not, keep it as a secondary. you never know if you'll need it.
thank you tho' for thinking of us.

you did mean donating right?

Yea, I meant donate. I have about 45 strips, but not the lancing device- I like to use that one. And my other one has been used, too--would you want it even though it's not sterile anymore?

Claudia,
I see Hocks sells the Freestyle lite strips for $28 for 50? How does that compare to the retail price you are used to?

FYI the Maxima meter costs $7 and 50 strips are $16.50. I liked it because I could test a lot and not worry about the cost. I now use the Walmart Relion- its a bit more but available 24/7. FYI- They both test pretty similarly.
You just have to remember, none of them are precision instruments, and when you get 220 then 235, that is basically the same number....

and I would always have a second meter and strips on hand. you can be sure that one day:
the battery will die
it will go into the washing machine in a pocket
it will be dropped one too many times

And when it does does die and you call the company, do NOT tell them you use it on your cat. Tell them you use it on your "baby" or something like that. Carlie is your "baby" kitty right? My OTU died unexpectedly and I did not have a spare meter on hand - that was a bit of a freak out night.

I paid almost $70 for 50 strips at the drugstore! So hocks is the way to go! So they don't like you to use their meters on furbabies, eh? Thanks for the tip.

Please click on the Yellow Hocks.com ad/image at the top left of this board before placing any order with Hocks. A commission goes to FDMB to help keep this place running [and from what I understand funds are desperately needed].
