Spitzer hasn't been doing well on Lantus and I think it may have started nearly a year ago when my friend accidentally misread the new insulin syringe and gave him 10 units, not 1. He has been vomiting intermittently which plays h*ll with his glucose levels and Lantus just doesn't work well in that situation because of the "shed" or depot effect.
Although I asked the vet about Levemir, she read over the materials, and did some more research and suggested trying ProZinc instead. She liked the chemical similarity to natural cat insulin. So tomorrow morning, I plan to start him on a nominal dose of maybe 0.5 units as I have a couple hours to monitor him before I leave for a large chunk of time.
