Hi everyone, it's been ages since I've posted, simply because Dave has been doing so well!

After one OTJ attempt was aborted by him getting violently ill from eating poisonous plants, I've given him another try, and 13 days in I'm not sure whether it's worthwhile giving him insulin. He's about half in blues and greens, throwing numbers as high as 137 (almost definitely caused by getting into dry dog food) and as low as 64 only yesterday. Whilst I know the blues are not ideal, if they're only caused by high-carb food and he regulates himself soon afterwards, is it worthwhile shooting again?

Thanks for any advice, you guys have helped Dave and I so much! (His spreadsheet is a day out of date, I'll update it as soon as I get home from school.)

Normally we'd expect to see cats solidly in green before starting an OTJ trial and during the OTJ trial, except maybe the first few days. Here is a post describing starting OTJ trials. According to TR, he didn't earn his reductions to 0.1 or off the juice. The goal is to keep giving insulin as long as is safely possible, to give the healing pancreas as much support as possible and have a strong remission. Having said that, he did get down to 3.8 (68) a couple days ago. Are you feeding multiple small meals? With kitties on small bits of insulin or newly off insulin, a small snack around +8 or +9 can get the pancreas going and bring down those preshot numbers into green. Some people will go from a 0.1 unit dose to a "drop" dose.

I agree with Wendy. Have a look at Georges as for an idea of what you are looking for in terms of BG numbers before starting the trial.

I did a drop dose for 2 weeks before starting the trial, I prolonged the insulin support to give the fragile beta cells in the pancreas time to heal and get strong, since this has been noted to improve kitties chances of a strong remission.

that 65 in there is good, but with so many blues in there I'd be concerned about whether the remission will be strong and hold, so I'd suggest at the very least continuing to monitor daily, beyond day 14.
