Still hanging in the blues, though they are low. I didn't think the MC food would bump her up that much, but maybe it coincides right when I've been able to test. Gonna finish with this round of meds and then see if she does have an infection w/ another vet. A little peeved the ER vet didn't check her urine, or ask me if I wanted her urine checked. Would have saved another trip.

Mobile vet is on vacation, but they can see her next Thursday. I took the appointment, and can always cancel if things worsen and she needs to be seen sooner by someone else.

Can you just take in a sample? Or do they need the needle (I'm blanking on the actual term)

I've asked about bringing in a sample before and they told me they prefer the needle. I'm also not sure it's a UTI because I'm just not seeing the usual signs. It's primarily her elevated BG. So I'm not sure if there would be different tests to determine a kidney infection vs. a bladder infection, or if that's what a urine culture would tell me.

I'm also interested in switching vets, because I don't love this place where we've been. It's very doggy and it stresses her out so much. The vet is very deferential when talking about feline diabetes or CKD - wanting me to visit a specialist 40 minutes away. I guess that's better than pretending they know a lot about the condition, but there doesn't seem to be the interest in working with me.

From what I understand, a urinalysis will tell you if there is the presence of proteins, red and white blood cells, glucose and ketones in the urine. A culture tells you if there is bacteria in the urine and what kind it is so the right antibiotic is prescribed that would be most effective. I'm not sure if there is a clear way to distinguish a kidney vs bladder infection. If there is no blood in the urine and no bacteria in the culture, then it could be cystitis, inflammation or irritation of the bladder. If it's cystitis, D-Mannose is a very good cure. It's a sugar that does not get absorbed in the body and cleans out the bladder of any irritants.

A more advanced diagnostic would be an ultrasound to look at her kidneys but I don't know that it's necessary yet.

Ruby's primary vets want nothing to do with her diabetes, always deferring to the advice of an IM. And then even her IMs, including her oncologist, are not great and don't understand the relationship of BGs to concurrent illnesses. They would probably tell you to take Chloe off insulin. I feel your frustration!

Interesting. I've always declined the cytocentesis (thank you! I knew it was a "c") and dropped off sample...but being honest the vet techs would probably lose some chunks of skin during the process. Next Thursday seems like a long time to wait for possible infection...are the ERs full near you? They are here.

This is another reason I want to go to a different vet. Last time we took her in for a urine culture they wanted to sedate her because of how she had behaved on her previous visit (dental cleaning). Nevermind that I dropped her off at 8 AM for her cleaning WHICH THEY DIDN'T GET TO UNTIL ALMOST 4 PM. No wonder she was pissed. And imagine when they took her right back, they got the sample without issue or sedation.

No, the ERs are not full. We were there on Saturday because of vomiting up blood. They gave us meds for ulcers (though only checked vitals and didn't to any imaging). Those meds should run through the end of this week. If it was an ulcer (and she has a history of spitting up and having tummy acid problems), then I could see how that discomfort could also raise her BG. So since I'm not seeing any other signs, I'm okay with letting these meds run their course before she's seen for other conditions. But if symptoms do crop up, I will take her somewhere.
