I talked to someone at the oncologists office today and they said that if he continues to not eat... we will start an appetite stimulant. They are prescribing cyproheptadine 1/2 tab twice daily as needed. We already have some here (From RG&Mali - Thanks!) so that makes things a bit easier!

Fortunately, Jupiter has decided to eat today!! They said if he continues to eat tonight, even if it is less then his normal amount... hold off on the cypro until the morning. They said if at any point he stops eating again, we can give the cypro as needed.

He seems pretty tired again today. Since his chemo treatment, Jupiter is laying in bed with me all the time. He wants to be lying right next to me at all times! I am reallllyyyy hoping his appy continues to improve!

Its been a long day.... Was offering food every 20-30 minutes today, and although most of the time he would only take a lick or two... it all adds up!

We gave him the cerenia again today and will also give it to him tomorrow. He has not had any diarrhea so we are holding off on giving that... and only giving it if and as needed.

Thank you all so much for the visits. Having the support we have here is amazing and it has helped me get through so much! I apologize I havent had the time yet to visit many condos these past few days.... I am going to try to visit some condos tomorrow.

Re: 10/10 Jupiter

I'm glad Jupiter seems to have turned the corner. Do you know what chemo drug he had? Last year I did a lot of reading about chemo drugs and it turns out they have a nadir of effectiveness. Who knew learning about diabetes meant I could understand some of the things in vet technical articles. So maybe Jupiter's gotten past the worst now.

Keep eating Jupe! It makes your mommy happy.

Re: 10/10 Jupiter

Hi guys,
Keep on eating, Jupe! We want a happy appy. Jamie, I hope that he continues to improve and that he will be feeling much better by tomorrow. We are continuing to send those positive thoughts and beautiful healing vines.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 10/10 Jupiter

Jupe- please just one more bite - Keep on eating- your mama bean will cuddle you all night long if you keep eating!
Jaymie- you are doing great as always with catering to Jupe's every need- lol- I think he is taking advantage of this :-D

hugs to all!

Re: 10/10 Jupiter

I'm glad he's eating, Jamie!

When I recommended the liver shake, I mentioned you could see if he would eat it on his own. Gus had not been eating and he lapped the stuff up and continues to eat it. And he's also eating his own food. I've been syringing him a little just because the shake has so many good things in it for him and he's not eating quite as much as before. I thought you could just make it and offer it to Jupe.

Re: 10/10 Jupiter

Jamie, I'm pretty sure I saw Marje post it in FB yesterday, but I can't find it right now. Maybe you'd have better luck.
I don't know who's post she put it in.

Re: 10/10 Jupiter

I could not find it here but I find it elswhere, originally from a crf board. If this is not the right one, I'm certain someone will chime in :) Sure sounds icky....yup, would have to throw away the blender lol :

THE '~LIVER SHAKE~' FOR SICK CATS

This liquid food is appropriate for cats suffering from conditions
where they are eating very little or not at all such as anemias,
leukemias, deficiency states with symptoms of lethargy, listlessness,
and weakness.

1 cup RAW LIVER (BEEF, or CHICKEN)
1 cup FRESH CARROT JUICE or V-8, or Tomatoe Juice
1/4 cup *FRESH FILTERED WATER
1 RAW EGG YOLK
1 tsp. KELP POWDER OR SPIRULINA

COMBINE AND MIX IN A BLENDER UNTIL LIQUIFIED. (Note: it will be frothy)

Dosage:

Administer lOcc daily 3-6 times a day. (6Occ per day max)

Some cats will need to be force-fed with a syringe, while others will
drink it out of a bowl.

This food has a sweet and salty taste, and the energetic properties of
tonifying (energy boosting), warming and stimulating and supports the
kidneys, spleen, liver and stomach.

This drink is a complete dinner for a sick cat until they feel good
enough to eat by themselves again.

*Substitute rice water if the cat has diarrhea. Rice water
is made by boiling white rice (2 Tblsp) with water (1 cup) for 30
minutes.
This liquid aids digestion and assimilation and inhibits the symptoms
of diarrhea.

Re: 10/10 Jupiter

Sheesh, ten minutes of searching, and found it in Marje's own post, came back here to brag that I found it.
Thanks Barbara!

Re: 10/10 Jupiter

Ohh I was looking on the health forum not the health links.... just realized that.

Either way, thank you all for the help finding it!!

Re: 10/10 Jupiter

I hope Jupiter is feeling better and will continue to eat for you. Sending prayers and hugs. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 10/10 Jupiter

Jamie

Linda/BearMan mentioned to me that the liver shake might not be a good idea for Jupe because of the raw meat. It might contain bacteria which is likely not a good thing for an immunosuppressed system. So...maybe hold off.

I wasn't thinking about raw and immunosuppressive but it's a great point.

And yes...Gussie has his own little Bullet blender dedicated to cat use only.

Re: 10/10 Jupiter

Good point on the raw meat and chemo. The oncologist I visited last year (with a friend's dog) said the same thing. I wonder if the shake would still work if the liver was cooked? My friend's dog was also getting doxorubicin and was originally on a raw diet. Cooking the dog's raw food worked for him.

I would also use caution with the raw egg.

Re: 10/10 Jupiter

Yeah - I wouldnt have thought about the bacteria in the raw stuff. Thank you so much Marje and Linda for pointing that out. I will hold off on the liver shake. His appy was pretty good yesterday and getting worse again today - but will try to keep coaxing him to eat.

Thank you Wendy, Ann, Carla, Barb, Barbara, Janet, Anne, Rich, Mariko, Sherry, Jane, Josie, Ella, Lyresa, Sienne, Marje, & Linda for the visits!

10/11 UPDATE

:YMSIGH:

His appetite has been really on and off today. He will get hungry but only take a lick or two at a time. Ate decent yesterday but today seemed a little worse. I am considering giving him a little max cal food just to get some more calories in him. Will wait til the morning though... if he eats well I will see how he eats tomorrow... if he doesnt eat anything overnight i will try the max cal in the morning... he will usually eat that on his own.... but only 1 can left... no vets sell it around here...

but the GOOD news for today:
Jupiter was trying to chase his sister around the house earlier to play with her! It was sooooo cute! He still needs practice... but he is learning to run!

I really appreciate all the visits. Im so sorry I havent replied on condos lately  Things have been a little busy and I am not feeling well - so checking the board from my phone and reading condos but not posting replies because its hard to post from my phone. Will visit and post to you all soon. *hugs*

liver shake should be ok if you cook the egg and liver. even fr. lisa now says to cook the egg in her raw recipe.

cal was very sick and she just loved the stuff. I fed her as much as she wanted

That's great Jupiter was trying to run. I hope his appy gets better. Sending prayers for you and Jupiter. Jamie, I hope you're feeling better.
