1/8 Sunny coming out of remission?

Sunny's been in remission since June of '23. His monthly spot checks have always been in the green until today. This morning got a 145. This was before eating his breakfast. Then a 175 about an hour after eating.

Do I start him on insulin right away or monitor for awhile? If so, do you start back at a drop dose?

We have a trip coming up late January for 10 days and I'm worried about starting insulin and then leaving him with the pet sitter before we have a handle on it. He'll need so much monitoring once he's back on the juice.

I made a vet appt to get his teeth looked at next week. Maybe he has some infection going on.

Good move. His BG wound up an hour after eating. You want to check 3-4 hours after eating.

I’d start getting an ambg and pmbg. If not green get a +3 or 4.

thanks @tiffmaxee - I could hardly wait to test him again. lol - I will be more patient and wait longer after feeding.
I just remembered he coughed up a big hairball this morning too -- and I seem to remember that can make the BG# higher than usual. I'll monitor for awhile. Hopefully this is a blip. He seems well and feeling good.

Our Tango came out of remission after 6 months on insulin. He was in remission for 6 months then BG started spiking. We waited about 2 weeks before starting insulin. It's been 8 months since and still on insulin. He is regulated, so we're grateful for that. He did have dental work done about 1 month after restarting insulin. Though, not significntly, numbers came downa little. I know dental issues can cause an increase in BG so I would definitely have his checked.

As I'm not an expeert, I don't know how soon you should restart insulin. I'm sure someone will be along soon to help.

I do hope Sunny Bear is just having a few bad days.

Getting a checkup, blood work and look at the teeth by the vet, is an excellent idea. A few days of monitoring will let you know if this is a one-off high numbers or a trend.

Any chance he got into some high carb food? One of your previous posts mentioned CD in the house.

If you do go back on insulin, you'd start at higher than a drop dose. His highest dose last time was 2 units (at least on the part of the SS that has data), so it's likely he could end up going that high again. Tango's spreadsheet is a good example of a cat needing to go back up to his previous high before turning it around.

thank you Lori! Hopefully this is just a temporary blip. Thanks for your support. I'll check out Tango's spreadsheet so we can follow your lead if we need to.

Thanks @Wendy&Neko - there's a slight chance he could've gotten ahold of some CD if one of the other cats shoved it off the high desk we keep it on. He can't jump up there but sometimes they shove the food around and Sunny is on it right away.
Here's the good news: It's been 4 hours now since he ate and his BG is 91.

I'll monitor for awhile and potentially keep our appt on the 15th if we see a repeat high number. Hopefully we'll stay back in the blue now and this was just a quick blip.
