Good morning,
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=111366

Well, back in the red for the AM shot, but we'll keep our fingers crossed for the rest of the day.

Ole has been teaching Loki some of his bad habits regarding food behavior. For the past 2 mornings, Loki has gobbled his breakfast so quickly, he has vomited shortly after finishing (I spoon feed Ole to slow him down). With the speed and stealth of a Concord, Ole is feasting on Loki's regurgitation before I can clean it up, Gross! Loki and Ole eat the same food so that's not the problem, but this is just sad.

Ole's 5 P's are in order and I will check his ketones shortly as per his schedule.

I think I saw a food bowl that had a channel for the food -- think of a circle within a circle and the food went in the space between. Since the food was spread out, it forced the kitty to eat more slowly. I'm not sure where you'd find it, though.

Re: 1/7 Ole AMPS 476

Hi guys .. So sorry to hear about the food problem, it sounds like that slow bowl feeder might be a good investment! Ole, come on back down now, no need to be that high! have a great day guys!

Re: 1/7 Ole AMPS 476

Hi Rebekah!!

You can try spreading the food around on a plate so they to work a little to get it off, or put something in the food bowl (like a golf ball or a rock) that will slow them down. Works the same basic way as the slow feeder.

Come on Ole!! Work that juice!!

Re: 1/7 Ole AMPS 476

Maybe you could try putting part of Ole's food down at a time. Then when he's finished with that give him the rest of it.

Re: 1/7 Ole AMPS 476 +5 430 R dose tonight?

Hi all,

Thank you for the information on the slow feeder. I believe I will order a couple. I worry about putting a ball into Ole's bowl for fear that he would try to gulp it down too and choke. Did I ever tell you about the time that Ole bit off and swallowed the end of the plastic spoon that I was feeding him with? Ole rarely, if ever throws up after eating. I'll have Alex take a video of me feeding Ole tonight. Get some popcorn and enjoy.

Ole is pretty quiet this morning, but did test negative for ketones. Should I give another .1uR tonight?

Thank you,
Rebekah

Hi Rebekah:

I have a kitty that eats too fast, too. We used to call her the bulimic kitty, but we've managed to almost cure her of the binge and purge. The spreading the food around and giving smaller portions does help, but that's not always possible. Good luck with the feeder bowls. I'll be interested to hear if they work for you.

So happy about that , and that you are vigilant about checking. Very important.

Not enough data today for me (personally) to say. What happened after the AM+4=430 ?

I'm sorry Sandy, I was at work all after noon and couldn't get a test. I just returned home.
Thank you,
Rebekah

Re: 1/7 Ole AMPS 476 +5 430 .1uR dose tonight??

no worries Rebekah - life happens

Ole is safe and no evil ketones :-D

I'm headed out the door for a few hours and will visit again later tonight.

If Ole can gulp down a golf ball, I want to see this cat up close!!

Re: 1/7 Ole AMPS 476 +5 430 PMPS 482

Sorry about the yucky extra meal Ole had, blech :? Chyna has done that...eaten, puked, and then eaten it before I could get there... I hope Ole is feeling good tonight and slides down some for you. Have a good evening :-D

Re: 1/7 Ole AMPS 476 +5 430 PMPS 482

we'll get him there, rebekah! don't be discouraged - it takes longer with some cats but everyone gets there. you're doing everything you can and being as safe as possible.

trying to remember if you read the post that marje did on pancreatitis. it can simmer and be a cause of difficulty in regulating a cat. that's on the bottom of the New to the Group sticky, along with a lot of other good posts.

Giving him sub-q fluids, vitamin B12 and pain relief, usually Bupe, are things that many cats get on an ongoing basis to keep the pancreatitis under control.

Re: 1/7 Ole AMPS 476 +5 430 PMPS 482

Hey!

Yes, a cat eating his own barf is gross, but a cat eating another cat's barf is gross sad gross gad gross and sad! I'll try to get our video of Ole eating up in the next couple of days. I am so busy at work right now, uff-da.

I've read Marje's information of Pancreatitis, which was very helpful. Because I dilute Ole's food, he is nicely hydrated. I do have experience giving sub Q's to a cat though. I will continue to look into this issue. Thank you for pointing me in the direction of another treasure trove of useful information on this site!

I must turn in. Alex will continue testing and I will post in the morning.

Thanks!
Rebekah

yes, animals eating icky things has a class all by itself of gross!

there are an amazing number of good single-topic posts on that New to the Group sticky. Have fun reading. hehe we'll see you next week when you resurface!

Punkin had one bout of pancreatitis (i thought) but the vet told me she thought he had a chronic case of it. I did find that the subq fluids, vit b12 and bupe on a continual basis really helped him. The vet told me that subq fluids were absorbed betterand more helpful than adding water to the food - i did that as well. not sure if that would make a difference in Ole's case, but it's something to add to the information pile of "could this help?"

sleep well!

Re: 1/7 Ole AMPS 476 +5 430 PMPS 482

I'd like to echo Julie's point. For a cat with pancreatitis, even if you feel he is well hydrated, a little subq fluids can help and provide some extra support.

Studies have indicated that many more cats than previously thought have very mild but chronic pancreatitis. Symptoms might be very diffuse and look like something else.

Paws crossed the numbers start down soon.
