Morning,

Blue slept on the table behind the plants. He's half on the table and half on the window seal.
It's so strange. He's never been up there that I know of. I think I'll take your advice Mogs
and call Bluepearl today. I'm in luck because this is the day the oncologist is in the Gwinnett
facility in case they want to see him.
His AMBG is 70. I'm testing him 3 times a day. Should I continue doing that?

I was able to speak to a vet at Bluepearl, although it was not the oncologist. He said the chemo would not cause him
to sit and stare for hours. He said due to his age he probably has dementia. I couldn't be more upset with them but
there are no other alternatives due to Covid. Funny how he developed dementia after each chemo treatment. :(

That sounds like absolute twaddle from someone who doesn't know the answer to your question. I'm so sorry that you didn't get a better answer. Maybe send all the observations in an email directly to the oncologist? You'd have a paper trail that way. Would it be worth running the observations past your vet at your own practice for comment?

I'll be bringing Lúnasa in to see our main vet in the next couple of weeks, and if I think of it (big 'if' with my memory issues  ) I'll ask him if he's ever come across anything similar to what you've observed in Blue. (He is quite hot on keeping up with research on all manner of subjects and perhaps he might have seen similar clinical signs in his own patients. Worth a punt.)

Funny how he developed dementia after each chemo treatment.
And how it spontaneously and miraculously disappeared again after a couple of days.

I think it's a good idea, especially while Blue's undergoing treatment. It puts you in a position to spot any upward drift in BG levels quickly (can give an early warning of an infection brewing, for example.) While the pre-afternoon-feed test could perhaps be skipped, because sometimes Blue's PMBG readings are a little higher, it's no harm to have that extra check on the spreadsheet to confirm he has been in good numbers most of the day.

HI Mogs,
I did think about contacting my vet. I also wondered if the CBD oil might be causing some of this.
I'm going to discontinue the oil and see if that helps. He's still over on the table laying behind the
plants. At least he's laying down now. He was sitting for a couple of hours. I'll keep testing 3 times
a day. He's more difficult now with what's going on.

Is this Noodle's regular vet visit or is there a problem? These kitties! (((Blue and Noodle)))

If it would be easier on Blue, maybe drop back to just the AMBG and PMBG? The afternoon test's more of a nice-to-have.

Bizarre.

What date did you start the CBD oil, Patty: before or after 21 December?

I've no experience of using CBD oil but maybe it might be worth posting a thread on Feline Health specifically about behaviour changes and asking whether any other members have observed similar when their kitties were receiving chemo and/or CBD oil?

Is this Noodle's regular vet visit or is there a problem?
She needs her bloods checked, and I want the vet to do an ultrasound of her abdomen (started overgrooming it after the introduction of the CKD diet but I don't know whether that's causal or coincidental).

I started him on CBD December 29. He had the same reaction after the first chemo so I still think that's the cause.
He is still sitting on the table with the plants. He's not sleeping. That's another reason I thought about maybe giving
him Gabapentin in hopes it would relax him so he could rest. I'm just upset over this behavior and I don't think he
has dementia. I am still going to stop the CBD.

(((Noodle bug))) I'm sure she won't be happy having to go to the vet.

I couldn't remember the exact date you started the CBD oil but i was fairly sure it was after Blue had had those 'staring' episodes (which kicked off on 21 December, 11 days after first chemo treatment).

I'd be upset and worried too, Patty. :bighug:

Maybe ring your own vet tomorrow and ask about the odd behaviour and also about Blue not sleeping properly? There's the possibility that they might be able to throw some light on things, and they should be able to tell you whether or not the gabapentin might be any help with the not sleeping.

Talking of gabapentin, our vet suggested that I trial it on the Noodle next time she has to go in (she's a complete mare at the vets). I must remember to ask him to prescribe some before her next visit.

(FYI, I typed out my previous post a little while ago and forgot to hit the Post Reply button, then I had to lie down for a while. I posted it before I got to read your most recent post.)

I just gave him some Gaba. We'll pretend he's in pain. He has been sitting on the table for two days now.
No sleep. I am feeling sad.
((((Patty)))) :( I really feel for you...

Hopefully the behavioural weirdness will be short-lived, as it was the last time. I hope the gabapentin helps Blue to get some sleep tonight. ((((Blue))))

Well, he left the table so that's a good sign. I tested him and gave him some food. He's disappeared so I'm hoping he's upstairs finally
taking a nap. It's been a long worrying day. I will call my vet if he is still acting like a statue but hoping he'll be better tomorrow.
It's so strange to see him just sitting there.

Hope you are okay. Just tired?

I think Blue is definitely OTJ. I don’t think you need to test more than once or twice a day but it’s up to you. I was just catching up on the last few days. I would want to speak with tge oncologist logistic about the weird behavior.

Is everything okay Elise?

Thank you so much for following us and helping to get him where he is. I never thought this day would come.

I can't get anyone in the oncology dept. to call me back. I'm not sure why they had Dr. Joe Blow call me. He
knows nothing about my Bluebird. Unfortunately, they only work M-Th. Their communication skills are lacking.
I so wish I could have gone to UGA.

I wonder if they would call my vet back...so crazy and gives Bluepearl a bad name.

Hi Patty,

I can't get anyone in the oncology dept. to call me back.
I'm sorry that you're having so many problems getting BluePearl to get back to you. The best I can suggest is to put requests to them in writing, via email. Daily.

Is Blue's behaviour showing any sign of returning to normal today? ((((Blue))))

Blue is still hiding. It makes me sad. I'm hoping he gets beyond it soon. I think this chemo doesn't agree with him. Maybe next appt. they will change it.

Oh dear. :( ((((Blue))))

Was he more like himself at all when the gabapentin was active in his system?

I know the university is not taking appointments with the internists but are they with oncology? I don’t want to further confuse you but I don’t like the way Blue Pearl dismisses your concerns.

I don't like it either but I hesitate to switch in the middle of treatment.

Dr. Johnson from my vet's office just now called to check on Blue. I was surprised but happy she did.
She said I can give the Gabapentin 3 times a day if I need to. I'm not sure how well it worked
last night because it was late and he hid away and I went to bed.

I now know his new hiding spot is in the corner behind the plant, so I put a fleece down for him.
I think he likes it. He's laying there now.

It's only been a week since his treatment so I'm trying to be patient.

I'm glad you got to talk to your vet, Patty. Did she have any ideas about the odd behaviour/vocalisations/spaciness?

I keep meaning to ask you this: you mentioned that you heard a loud noise before discovering Blue in his spot behind the plants. Did you ever discover what caused the noise?

Re the gabapentin, any time you do give it, I'd suggest keeping an eye on whether Blue behaves more like himself when it's active in his little system.

((((Blue))))

Vet said if it were vomiting or diarrhea it'd be easy to treat but not knowing what or why she wouldn't know. She did think the gaba was
a good idea. He might be in some pain that we aren't aware of but also, it calms him some.

He was on the table behind the plants originally and when he jumped on the table it rattled my terrarium so that was the loud noise. He's staying on the floor now behind the floor plant.

I'm going to feed him and will give him a dose after so I'll notice how he reacts.

He seems a little better tonight. He laid on me for awhile and I pet him but I did have to walk
over to get him. He's eating again tonight. I think he's lost a few ounces. I weighed him and
he's 7.10 1/2. Bluepearl has him weighing 8.05 on the 31st.

Yes, he seems more alert. He's still behind the plant under the table. He looks comfortable.

Yes, I will feed him a bit more. Thanks.

You and Noodle bug doing ok? How's your weather. It's cold here. In the 30s which is cold for the south.
