Zener is feeling fine this morning. He did his flop over and stretch into hyper-extension when I went to pet him this morning. It's cute. He is definitely peeing more with these high numbers, hope they don't last long. We got a new cable modem and router last night - wow, 8 to 10 times faster than before. You'd think an electrical engineer would be more up on these things...

Thinking of Isil and Tifil, Jac and Jetta, Roni and Moonie today. Sending tons of healing energy and good thoughts their way for speedy recoveries. Hugs to everyone. Happy Friday LL!

Hi guys .. well zener .. I'm not quite sure what to say about that +1 .. let's just hope you don't stay up there for to long! Our civvie twix always flops over and shows us her extra white belly .. but the second we go to touch it, she flops the other way and takes off  Such a belly tease .. have a great weekend guys!

@ Devon - the kitty belly tease is pretty cute. Zener doesn't roll over though, he lets us pet and rub his belly. :-D

We are sure glad to read that Moonie if feeling better. :-D Happy Friday LL!

Re: 1/6 Zener AMPS 377;+1 427;+2 338;+4 317

There is something good to be said for that +1. It's history! Looks like Zener is headed in the right direction. Maybe a bit slowly, but hey, considering his alternatives, slowly downward it just fine!

Re: 1/6 Zener AMPS 377;+1 427;+2 338;+4 317

That's a nice slide there Zener.I wouldn't have worried too much on the +1, just keep telling yourself it is normal to have a food spike. Even discounting food, the +1 was was within 20% of the preshot. That margin of error is really big on higher numbers.

Re: 1/6 Zener AMPS 377;+1 427;+2 338;+4 317

Zener had a weird +1, but now is down and nearly yellow. Yay, Zener!

@Liz: I am half Turkish, have family in Turkey, and have been there many times. My Turkish family speaks English fluently, which is good, because my Turkish stinks!! I have a cousin in Ankara who has found Işil another vet if this one doesn't work out. :-D

Have a great day Liz and Anne! :YMHUG:

Re: 1/6 Zener AMPS 377;+1 427;+2 338;+4 317

Zener is coming down nice and slow, looking good. :-D

Harley will lay on her back, show you her belly, then grab your hand and bite it! if you are foolish enough to try to touch. Which I always am  just can't resist!

@Linda - Love it - it's history! We like slow too!

@Ann & Tess - thanks for the +1 support and reminder of meter variance. We are still getting used to our new meter, but like how easy to use it is and wonder why it took us so long to change! :-D

@Rhanda - Liz visited Turkey a few years ago, while at a conference in Greece. Perhaps she will PM you to tell you more about her visit. Yes, Zener was nearly yellow, perhaps in the PM cycle.

@Melissa & Bailey - nice and slow and even flat is okay after a fur shot. We had paws crossed we wouldn't see that horrible color. We have never had a cat that loved having his belly rubbed like Zener. We think it has something to do with his CH, since his balance is poor for petting in standing. cat_pet_icon

@Anne & Muffin - well, almost yellow - we'll say it's meter variance! ;-)

@Amy - he does such a good job working his juice, if his mama bean will get it in him correctly!

@Celi - I was reserve comment on engineer humor to Liz, the engineer. I would not be surprised if she has graded papers with similar grammar.

We'll be off to visit the new cat vet in a couple of hours. Zener is doing better so maybe our visit will be a waste, but it will be good to get established with her as this clinic is the only emergency clinic in town. More tonight.

Doesnt look like a fur shot :-D Hope Zener is feeling good today--Thanks for the good wishes.. I was just sleeping in the bed with her & I snuck out & let her sleep..Fur shots happen, then they're over--
Smooth sailing in yellow the rest of the day! Hugs & Love from us!

PMPS 369. 7th cycle at 1.75u, 1.9oz 8%, 1t laxatone

We went to the new vet today, who works at the emergency clinic. Very interesting and helpful and it was good to get established there in case of an emergency. She was on board for what we were doing with his diabetes and was familiar with FDMB. The vet was good with Zener and had a little different perspective on evaluation. She did a thorough exam and found some muscle twitching in response to palpation along his spine at the lumbar sacral junction but no clear reactions that he had pain there or when palpating his stomach and bowel area.

She recommended an x-ray of his spine, legs and abdomen, just in case although there was nothing conclusive on the physical exam. We were on board with that and then we would discuss pain management options after looking at the x-ray,.She was good with prescribing adequan and us doing the injections and offered that as an option as well as acupuncture to manage pain. We had x-rays done a few months ago at our other clinic and they were inconclusive for any joint or disc problems, so I don't think this vet anticipated finding anything much, especially since he didn't act like he had pain with some pretty vigorous palpation.

Well, there is a good thing we did the x-ray. Joints and spine looked good. But his bowel was moderately distended with quite a lot of feces near the junction of the large intestine and rectum. She concluded he had decreased motility and was constipated which can happen post anesthesia for any surgery, and also bowel motility can be affected by the bupe. The pain behavior had started a week post dental - when we thought he might have an infection and all in his mouth was clear. So, we restarted bupe for a few days, stopped, no eating/pain - went back to the vet and had stitches removed, mouth all good and back on bupe. So, he would stop eating because his stomach/bowel area hurt, then we would give him bupe for pain and he would eat, but was having decreased bowel motility and poor pooping. Once he started having a regular looking poo after the clamavox ended the first week post-dental I quite stalking him in the yard to check on his poop and assumed all was well and within a few days he started having pain. Next time, I will be more diligent in stalking the poo!

They did some subq fluids to get him well hydrated and started laxatone to help get him regulated. If no poo in 36-48 hours, we go back for possible enema. We told Zener the enema plan, so we think we will get some action! We would be comfortable with this vet and clinic, but she didn't knock our socks off, making us think "we'd better switch vets". We are glad to have a backup now and know the routine in case of an emergency.

And it was just as Zener told our animal communicator - pain in his general stomach area and decreased motility. Amazing isn't it?

@Roni - perhaps it wasn't a fur shot and he was just pinky because of a bounce and discomfort. Though there was quite a bit of fluid and insulin smell last night, so maybe at least some juice got in. And as you write - fur shots happen and then they are history!

Paws crossed we start seeing some movement of numbers downward and poo outward! Hope everyone has a quite and lovely night in LL.

Re: 1/6 Zener PMPS 369 vet report

Mystery solved, let the poo stalking begin! It all makes perfect sense now. Zener should feel better in no time. Yay!

Re: 1/6 Zener PMPS 369 vet report

Yes Linda, we are relieved pain mystery is resolved. On closer inspection though we see laxatone has corn syrup in it! We've read on the board that miralax can be used for constipation and does not have sugar in it. Will have to check on correct dose for kitties.

Re: 1/6 Zener PMPS 369 vet report

You might want to discuss some alternatives to Laxatone with the vet. It contains corn syrup, molasses, and malt syrup. It's not very FD friendly. You might search the site to see if there are recommendations (besides vasoline or Miralax) for constipation.

Re: 1/6 Zener PMPS 369 vet report

Thanks Sienne! Silly us, we got it from the vet and just gave it without reading the label first and did not ask the vet if it was diabetic friendly, even though it was clear from everything that he is diabetic. Sheez. We have Miralax and I found the instructions on the site just now. There is the precaution for kitties with kidney problems, which knock on wood, Zener does not have. We will do some more searching for other options. For now, it looks like it hasn't spiked his BG but we do not want to continue to use it with all that corn syrup, molasses and malt syrup!

PMPS 369. 7th cycle at 1.75u, 1.9oz 8%, 1t laxatone
+1 316, 0.5oz 11%

We gave a bit of 11% since there was quite a drop @+1. Will test again soon and see what happens from the laxatone.

Re: 1/6 Zener PMPS 369;+1 316 vet report

Our civvie, Frankie, is on a "maintenance dose" of Miralax...she gets 1/8 tsp, split between her two meals. I guess this is another ECID thing, but the vet initially told us 1/2 tsp twice a day. Yikes - what a disaster that was - poor Frankie!!! Like you, we didn't question the vet...I always amaze myself when things like that slip by me, when I think I'm sooo on top of everything.

Zener was spot on about what was going on - I'm glad you guys found the answer!!! Have a great night!

Re: 1/6 Zener PMPS 369;+1 316 vet report

binksy still gets his 1/8 tsp Miralax am & pm...

help him do the "Happy Crap Dash" after he hits the LB :-D :-D

Re: 1/6 Zener PMPS 369;+1 316 vet report

Hi guys - oh wow! poor Zener! well, at least you know the reason. I too need to be more diligent n the watching for poo department, I am so bad, and amazed at how tings can slip by.... i hear alot of kitties are on miralax for maintenance. Hope that helps zener.

Ok Zener - problem solved, now time to leave the pink floor. Mannie says he could use some company on the blue one. He may BBQ if enough kitties show up.

Re: 1/6 Zener PMPS 369;+1 316 vet report

Hey Mannie, crank up the BBQ, I'm bringing the picnic table! -- Zener

So much for the vet BG spike!
PMPS 369. 7th cycle at 1.75u, 1.9oz 8%, 1t laxatone
+1 316, 0.5oz 11%
+2 229, 0.5oz 8% + 1 drop honey

We're back to the 8% with honey to see if we can get Zener out of this dive. We don't want another big bounce, as if we have control!

@Amy - thanks for the info on the Miralax. Our civvie is also on laxatone, so we will switch them both to Miralax tomorrow. We have gotten much better at questioning our vet, thanks to the education we get here at FDMB and LL. Must have been off our game since it was a new vet and clinic.

@Celi - if it's Binksy's program, then Zener will love it! We are anxiously looking forward to the day when he dashes from the LB again!

@Michelle & Mannie - yes, we love knowing, as Sienne says "knowledge is power"! And we were grateful it wasn't something worse. We can deal with poo. And Zener has left the pink floor, for now, so crank up the BBQ! :-D

Re: 1/6 Zener PMPS 369;+1 316;+2 229 vet report

I'm very happy to read the vet figured it out! Now hopefully Zener can have relief. We also use Miralax for Jetta and although right now isn't a great a example, it has done wonders for her. She gets a heavy 1/2 of an 1/8 tsp twice a day.

Re: 1/6 Zener PMPS 369;+1 316;+2 229 vet report

Thank you Jaq, looks like we are switching to Miralax! We have some already, so will start to use it. Though by looking at Zener's express train ride tonight, maybe it's a good thing we gave him 1t of laxatone! :o

@ +2.5 180, 0.4oz 11% + 2 drops karo

Re: 1/6 Zener PMPS 369;+1 316;+2 229;+2.5 180 vet report

Slow down Zener dude!! You don't need to race down that BG scale.

I'm so glad you liked the vet and got some good info. I might recommend slippery elm bark powder syrup for constipation. It coats the intestines...always has helped my cats and I prefer it over to any other laxatives. Plus
SEB is a nutritive. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington's troups ate it at their winter camp at Valley Forge for nutrition and to combat dysentery (it's good for intestinal issues). If you go to a good health food store and buy the pure, loose powder, then combine 1/2 c spring water with 1 tsp powder, heat gently in glass or porcelain pan until just a little thickened. Pour into glass jar to store in frig. Give 5 mls bid. Be sure you give it at least two hours before or one hour after any meds.

Sending him healing vines for his intestinal upset.

Cool on the new modem :-D

Re: 1/6 Zener PMPS 369;+1 316;+2 229;+2.5 180 vet report

Still on the express train!
PMPS 369, 7th cycle at 1.75u, 1.9oz 8%, 1t laxatone
+1 316, 0.5oz 11%
+2 229, 0.5oz 8% + 1 drop honey
+2.5 180, 0.4oz 11% + 2 drops karo
+3.3 134, 0.3oz 17% + 2 drops karo

We are loving us some blue numbers and would prefer a nice slow slide rather than the cliff dive we have this evening. Oh well, it is what it is! We added karo rather than honey to the 11% and still dropping ~40 minutes later. So, we upped the carbs to 17% with 2 drops karo again. We expect Mr Liver to start having issues about this cycle. @-)

I may have forgotten to add above that they gave Zener subQ fluids at the vet, does that have an effect on BG that may be contributing to the express train tonight?

@Marje - thanks for the info on the slippery elm bark powder. We have a health food store here, well, an organic grocery that has a large supplement section. We will check there on our next visit this weekend. Have you ever ordered online?

Re: 1/6 Zener PMPS 369;+1 316;+2 229;~3 134;~4 100 vetty

We may have a rainbow bandit on our hands tonight, good grief.

+2.5 180, 0.4oz 11% + 2 drops karo
+3.3 134, 0.3oz 17% + 2 drops karo
~4 100, 0.3oz 17% + 2 drops karo, 2 treats

Will keep feeding and testing every 30 minutes on this express drop. :?

And he's now GREEN!

PMPS 369, 7th cycle at 1.75u, 1.9oz 8%, 1t laxatone
+1 316, 0.5oz 11%
+2 229, 0.5oz 8% + 1 drop honey
+2.5 180, 0.4oz 11% + 2 drops karo
+3.3 134, 0.3oz 17% + 2 drops karo
~4 100, 0.3oz 17% + 2 drops karo, 2 treats
+4.5 90, 0.3oz 17% + 2 drops karo, 3 treats
+5 82, 0.3oz 17% + 1 drop karo, 3 treats
+5.5 80, 0.5oz 17%, 1 treat

Good grief, I think I forgot we weren't using the alpha trak meter anymore, and when he was getting close to 80 kept carbing to avoid the reduction, which is below 80 on the AT. It looks like he is surfing green now and should be near nadir, so will test again in an hour and stop with the HCs. Likely to see a bounce from the rapid drop early in his cycle, time will tell.

Hope all have sweet dreams tonight, ni ni LL! I-)

had to check in on zener before i head for bed! glad you made it to the new vet and at least she's acceptable.

no personal experience with the sub-q's, but i'm pretty sure i've heard people say that they can lower BG's. hope you all get some sleep tonight! and i hope zener manages to get rid of all the oogies he's carrying around!
