hi everyone,
seems like all is quiet and everyone is doing ok here.
Shakespeare is going to drive me to drink!!(ok, drink more!)
he does really well for 2 weeks, then his numbers start rising again
i switch ed sites but he is still off
I am wondering about insulin resistance
I keep raising him every 2 weeks and until his body adjust he does great...
then..BAM...crappy numbers again
so off to the vet we go tomorrow
Does anyone know anything about insulin resistance?
THanks

Denise and Shakes

Here's Dr. Lisa's rather scary definition of insulin resistance:

The second issue is one of insulin resistance. In other words, the receptors on the cell wall that would normally open the door to the cell to let the glucose in when insulin 'knocks', stop 'listening' to the insulin. The cells 'resist' the signal that the circulating insulin is sending and the glucose is not transferred to the inside of the cell, resulting in an elevated blood glucose (hyperglycemia) and cellular 'starvation'. The elevated blood glucose, in turn, sends a signal to the pancreas telling it to secrete more insulin. The elevated insulin may somewhat override the insulin resistance resulting in more glucose entering the cells, but eventually the pancreas can become exhausted or 'burned out'.

Glucose toxicity results from chronic hyperglycemia. Glucose toxicity wreaks havoc on the entire body - especially the pancreas and its insulin-producing cells. A vicious cycle then ensues as the insulin-producing cells are damaged resulting in less insulin being produced.

And another page from wikipedia:

If he is insulin resistant, it seem like his pattern would be to react well to the dose for a while and then become resistant to that amount of insulin, Denise. I have no idea if that is a true insulin resistance pattern - maybe a question for your vet. Looking at your ss, as recently as 12/30, he was in regulated numbers for several days.

I hope your visit goes well and the vet has some ideas for you.

Denise,
Good luck @ the vet. Please let us know what they say about a possible resistance to insulin. Will be watching for your thread.

Thanks everyone,
I have to say that I am so scared that it is insulin resistance with him
ButI will keep my chin up(and yes shakes too)
and I guess it will be good for the site to experience something like this
