Hi again

Scooter's AMPS was pretty high again and he vomited shortly after breakfast. Twice in 2 days now. He hasn't done that since before he started insulin. I wasn't able to get any mid cycle checks but I can get a few tonight.

Re: 1/6 - Scooter - AMPS 286, vomiting

Ry:

First let me welcome you, also, to Lantus Land. We're so glad you and Scooter....who is absolutely ADORABLE...are here with us. Great job on the profile. I'm glad you could follow my instructions and love the way you decorated it!!

Have there been any changes to Scooter's diet....what he's being fed, how much at a time, how often, etc? When he throws up, has he been eating fast? When BG numbers are high, kitties get really hungry and sometimes wolf down
their food and then do what we call "scarf and barf". Is he throwing up pretty quickly after he eats? If so, he just may be really hungry and eating too fast. One way to address that is to spread out his alloted food over a few minimeals given at PS, and then over a few hours....if your schedule allows. You want to be sure that all feeding is done by his nadir and that he is not fed between +10 and +12 so we get a true number at his pre-shot time.

So...if you can pls give us a few more details on the pukus..then we might be able to help a little more. Also...if he throws up his food due to scarf and barf, you want to try and feed him again in small amounts as he needs food on
board to work with the insulin.

Re: 1/6 - Scooter - AMPS 286, vomiting

Nothing has changed, he normally has guts of steel, never a bout of diarrhea or persistent vomiting when we switched from dry to wet... I do think it is "scarf and barf" (lol), I fed him at about 7 AM and his AMPS was at 11:30 so he shouldn't have been too hungry, but... this cat LOVES food so it's probable. When he puked yesterday he didn't even make it away from the food dish, which was kind of nice because we have lino in the kitchen, otherwise he pukes on the carpet and we live in a rental... I will tell the SO to give him a little bit of food spread out when possible to try and avoid it next time.

I went to prepare some leftover pasta for myself and accidentally dropped a small piece of cooked pasta on the floor... Scooter ate it before I even realized what was going on, if that's any indication of how much he loves food of all kinds

Re: 1/6 - Scooter - AMPS 286, vomiting

Go Scooter, starting the day in yellow, that AMPS's not too bad at all for a newly dx kitty. Now if you would just chew a bit longer before you swallow and not scarf it all at once...

Re: 1/6 - Scooter - AMPS 286, vomiting

Could you also keep notes as to what Scooter was fed when he pukes? I'm wondering if he's gluten sensitive. The Fancy Feast pate foods are gluten free. Everything else you're feeding contains gluten. Scarf and barf is probably the more likely scenario but keeping good notes about what he's fed and if he barfs may help to get a handle on what's going on.

Re: 1/6 - Scooter - AMPS 286, vomiting

Welcome Ry! Marje covered the scarf and barf possibilities, so that just leaves me with the welcoming part. What a handsome little man your Scooter is!

Re: 1/6 - Scooter - AMPS 286, vomiting

Sienne - I fed him Fancy Feast back before we started insulin but quickly learned it was inconvenient and expensive in small cans... he still scarf and barfed on that too, but that was when his numbers were sky high from being left untreated for so long :( We were doing good about the vomiting, it had been over a week... I guess he was just hungry. I don't blame him, his numbers have been up again in the past few days. He only vomited intermittently before, lots more on the dry food but maybe only once a week on the canned before insulin.

Thanks Vyktors Mum and Linda :)

Re: 1/6 - Scooter - AMPS 286, vomiting

Ry:

I fed him at about 7 AM and his AMPS was at 11:30

Just to be sure....you are feeding him around his PS, too, right? Although it usually takes lantus 2-3 hours to onset, we do say "every cat is different" ECID and so Scooter should also be sure and have some food at PS. We typically recommend that you test/feed/shoot in about a ten minute time span if possible. It's ok to feed him up to two hours before his shot (as long as his numbers aren't in the 40s); then you can feed him another minimeal at PS.

Thanks for the info!!! Hope that is all it is but if you haven't fed the FF pate foods that Sienne referred to, maybe just a few cans to try would be worth it just to make sure? He could also have some other kind of allergy but it does sound like s/b.

Re: 1/6 - Scooter - AMPS 286, vomiting

Yes of course!! He gets pretest - small meal - Lantus shot while his face is in the bowl. Then when he's done I put out a bit more to last him the next 3-4 hours. However it looks like he's an early curver (his lowest #s have been around +4) and I'm considering only feeding him after the preshot, waiting for his nadir, and then feeding again somewhere around +5 or +6 (frozen at night) so he is good to go at next shot time. Not sure if I have the right thinking here.

And I'm not sure if the FF varieties in Canada are different but it was Chicken Feast and Turkey and Giblets feast Classic. It was a pate.

Re: 1/6 - Scooter - AMPS 286, vomiting

Hi Ry-

Just wanted to say that I'm happy to see you over here on LL. I'm glad things are going better with Scooter. I liked reading his profile.

Regarding "scarf and barf"....I've heard that there are food bowls made with humps in the middle and somehow this slows the cat down so they can't eat as fast. I've also heard of using a golf ball in the food bowl to slow them down. Anyone else know more about these things?

Re: 1/6 - Scooter - AMPS 286, vomiting

You just want to be cautious about feeding after nadir, if possible. It will slow down the effects of the insulin. Feeding at +8/+9 timeframes can cause higher PSs in some cats. If he gets really hungry at +5/+6 you "could" try something super low carb like a little boiled chicken breast. But some cats are so carb sensitive that even that could have an effect on insulin action.

Obviously, the caveat to all the above is, if kitty is going low and you need to steer their numbers with food after nadir, then do it :-D

Re: 1/6 - Scooter - AMPS 286, vomiting

Ry --

If Scooter has an early nadir, it makes more sense to give him his food early. In general, you want to feed before nadir -- in other words feeding during the time that insulin is at it's most active. If you are feeding post-nadir, there's less insulin to offset the effect of food. Gabby has an early nadir. She gets all of her food between pre-shot and +3.

Re: 1/6 - Scooter - AMPS 286, vomiting

hi Ry! you made it over to Lantus Land! good to see you! sorry scooter's having trouble with vomiting - hope we can help you get to the bottom of it.

i have heard of putting a golf ball in the bowl. haven't tried it, but sure would be easy to try out.

Re: 1/6 - Scooter - AMPS 286, vomiting

We are just going to try pacing him out on food, SO thinks he gorged himself and got sick too. Still highish numbers this evening. He was higher at +4 than PMPS. :YMSIGH: I feel like I'm going in circles!
