Hi. We haven't posted in awhile because not too much had changed and I thought we were on "cruise control" a bit.
So, I had been working overnights the past few nights and leaving MC/LC mix food in his automatic for +3 and +5 .This am when I got home from work- later than his usual 7am time- I gave him his shot. Then to try and get back to our 7AM/PM schedule- I tested him at 6:40, fed, but gave the PM shot at 7PM. Although, for dinner he didn't eat as large a serving as he usually does, so I gave him a few more teaspoons at +1.75ish since he was waiting by his dish -which is not always typical. I was shocked to see the (40)+3 and it makes me wonder if he had been doing this overnight the past few days. I thought I would see AM bouncing and not nice blue numbers if he had been...?
It is probably more likely that the shot timing - late, early, late and the meal changes that threw him off a bit...? Feeding at 6:40 but not giving the insulin until 7PM maybe ...?
Poor guy ran into the kitchen and was screaming at me for food after his test.
Fed 1 tspn MC (14%) with 1 tspn LC (3-7%) pate...will check another BG right about now.

Just when I thought I had this all under control.

(49) +3.5 ish
Gave some HC gravy with 1 tspn MC ( glyco) - ate readily not ravenously like before ...waiting for more food, but not vocal about it.

Yikes! Good catch. Makota puts the truth to the statement "many cats go lower at night"! You will need to keep testing tonight. Those carbs could wear off in a couple hours and he could come down again. This definitely calls for a 0.25 unit reduction. I presume you are using calipers because you were dosing 0.4 units.

I am not using calipers...I had couldn't find ones that lock and wasn't sure how I was supposed to calibrate the measurements. I had printed off the pictures that were posted here a long time ago for help with mircodoses. I use those pictures- printed out and marked on paper- as a guide with a backlight and magnifying glass. That's part of the problem...we can't take more reductions really. He was still hitting numbers in the 200s on the previous dose and I was told to try a high carb food so we could stop taking reductions. We've done that- one of his foods in closer to 4-6% carbs now- but I wanted to try 0.10 reductions if at all possible to slowly reduce down... Not sure if I am making any sense
0.25 wasn't enough it seemed and 0.5 is too much... I thought this 0.4 would be okay and planned on trying 0.3 as best I can line it up but...other than that I don't see how we wouldn't end up just bouncing back and forth from 0.5 to 0.25 every few days.
I have tried to find the right balance with the carbs and feeding time and I thought I had based on what data I had until tonight.
:(

I just don't get how I hadn't caught lower numbers at +3 before or seen higher AMPS like I have before when he drops this low overnight ... I really thought we were flat.
Do they just stop bouncing as much at a certain point- like if he's been in the low 100s for a few cycles but drops to 40, does it not cause the same overcorrection in the body that produces those higher numbers like drops of a wider range do ?

One other option is to use a method for dose reductions that comes from the German Lantus board. They don't reduce until there are 3 drops on separate cycles into the 40 - 50 range.
