Good Eeeevening!
(last condo)

Today’s question is about eating. In theory* I give Sushi 3 oz of canned 9 Lives at +0 and another 3 oz at +2.
I can’t remember why it’s a bad idea to allow diabetic cats to graze. (it throws off their #s?) Could someone remind me?

We’re now to the point where Sushi no longer grazes; he inhales each 3 oz serving within 15 to 30 minutes. A few things:
  • I believe he would eat more if I gave him more. But 12 oz a day seems like a good amount, and he’s on the verge of being overweight again. (he’s about 17 pounds; ideal would be 15) Should I feed him more?
  • Since he’s kind of “broken” of grazing, can I give him a full 6 oz at +0, only feeding him twice a day instead of 4 times?

*When the rubber meets the road, here’s what really happens:
AM – feed 3 oz at 6:30am & another 3 oz at 8 am
PM – feed 3 oz at 6:15 pm & another 3 oz between 8:30 and 9:30 pm.

;-)

what's wrong with your schedule? is it because he wants more to eat at preshot?

if he just inhales it all at preshot, that leaves him 12 hours without more food - i wouldn't be keen on that.

typically diabetic cats need to eat more often to help keep their BG more stable, but we tend to put most of the food in the first few hours after the shot so that the carbs are there when the insulin is working most effectively.

i think you have a pretty ideal feeding schedule. i feed punkin with the shot and 3 hours later. if anything, i'd give more meals more often, not feed fewer times a day.

doesn't sound like you should give him any more. you want his weight to be stable and it doesn't sound like he should gain more weight, especially not when you say he's on the verge of overweight, or should be 2lbs less.

Thanks so much Julie!

Some things are coming back to me--help me clarify:
- There shouldn't be any eating after +4? (why is that again?)
- And any tests taken between PS and +4 are unreliable because they'll be food influenced?

Hi Ashley:

Many feed on a PS, +1, +2, +3 schedule just to flatten out the early insulin curve so kitty doesn't dive. Normally your +1 will show a food spike but after that, the insulin should onset at about +2/+3 depending on the kitty. It's good to have a nice amount of food on board by then but I agree with Julie that it's better for a FD to not put it all in one helping.

You don't want to feed around and after nadir or between +10 and +12. If you feed around/after nadir, you will diminish the effects of the insulin. If you feed between +10 and +12, you will not know if you are shooting an artificially elevated (from food ) PS number.

food influences numbers for a couple of hours. but i wouldn't say that the tests aren't accurate.

i test and feed 1 can to punkin at shot time, then test and give 1/2 can of food at +3, then test at +5/6 to see what punkin's lowest number is.
