1/4/16, Uh oh,...Razz's BG rising.... after 14 days OTJ ,...what to do?

After exactly 14 days OTJ and really good numbers,.... today the devil appears to be returning....

The emotional swing from "awesome, we are off the hook" to "oh no!..." is very draining.

Does this mean his pancreas started working and has now stopped?

I am trying to decide what my next move should be.

His diet has not changed (FF Classic) and neither have his eating habits.

Today he got his usual 1/4 can midday treat of FF Classic (been getting that for past ten days) and you can see his BG turned and went back up to 135.

How long do I wait before putting him back on the insulin (Lantus) and what would be an appropriate starting dose?

They checked his gums and teeth about a month ago and appeared fine. He had his teeth cleaned about 8 months ago.

As for a UTI, I have no idea. He doesn't use a litterbox much so it is hard to tell what is happening there.

All suggestions as to next steps are welcomed!

As Chris said, I wouldn't panic just yet. Give him a couple of days with spot testing to see if he brings it back to green. If he continues to trend up, then I would worry and consider putting him back on insulin. Keep us posted with his numbers. You don't want to wait too long with him in higher numbers.

I am a little concerned at the speed with which he came off of insulin. His last regular dose was 2.25 units. Then you got rid of the dry food. We usually find that remissions are stronger if we can keep giving the healing pancreas insulin support, but of course it has to be safe to do so. Usually cats go down .25U at a time until they are off of insulin.
 
Yes I am concerned about it too. At the time the numbers got so low, so fast and then stayed so low for days I was afraid to give him anything.

My wife noticed his face is swollen tonight and there is definitely wound evidence of a fight. He is going to the vet at 8AM tomorrow for an exam.

Being a Tom,.. he has a history of..... get in a fight, go to the vet, get stitched up, get antibiotics... and get better in three days. (yes, he is neutered)

I am HOPEFUL the elevated BG is STRESS related, a result of the fight and then the ongoing pain of the wounds.

Since his BG actually fell from 135 to 87 at PMPS after a small LC midday snack, my thinking is he is producing some insulin, otherwise it would not fall at greater than +6?

So I am holding off on the insulin...
 
Infections or inflammation can also raise the BG. Good idea getting him in for a vet checkup.

With that green, I too would keep the insulin in the fridge. Paws crossed.
