Chip is still giving me the evil eye about the shot.

I think when he smells insulin from drawing the dose, he knows it's time to become unavailable.

He's feeling better, if only from these numbers.

Chip's 1/29

Re: 1/31 Chip AMPS 122

Hi guys .. what a pretty start to the day! Nice low blue can lead into greens in no time .. Sorry to hear chip struggles with his shots .. mocha did the same thing for us .. it was tough, but we did it .. have a great day!

Re: 1/31 Chip AMPS 122

He's really not that bad, but it's clear it's not his favorite thing.

He hated the NPH shots, I'm sure because I started out shooting those ice cold. If I let it warm up then it settled out in the syringe and stuck there. So it's warm the entire vial before rolling, or shoot cold. The NPH is apparently practically indestructible so I would often warm the vial in my hands first.

He jerked on the Lantus, so I suspect he could feel that.

With Levemir, it doesn't seem like he can feel it but he still hates the poke. And all the fuss about getting a good tent and avoiding a fur shot.

We'll see how high he bounces today, but it seems more *normal* so far. And he seems pretty normal. So I suspect the clavamox may be helping with something.

Re: 1/31 Chip AMPS 122

Glad to see these more normal Chip numbers.

I know you are not new at this but are you using 31g syringes? When I was using 30g early on, Gracie would "meep" when I gave the shot. I switched to 31g and not a sound. She doesn't even notice.

Also...I wonder if you tried a different method than the tent, it would be less time that he would have to get ants in his pants? Because Gracie is so darn plush (short hair but thick), I was afraid of giving fur shots. So I started using a different method. I pick up her fur where I want to shoot...pull gently straight up with my left hand (i'm right handed), and then I roll my left hand so the back of it faces the back of her head. This exposes a nice patch of skin. So while keeping lifted, I inject. I think in all the time we've been doing this (over two years), I've given one fur shot and that was in the first couple months because Tobey (who was a kitten) ran in and grabbed her by the head while I was trying to shoot

Re: 1/31 Chip AMPS 122 +4 287

They are the 31g terumos. Is there demo video of that technique?

I part the thick fur and look for skin. I don't have to worry about going through the other side as much has him pulling away while plunging. Sometimes I suspect it goes intramuscular but that has to be better than not going.

And here is our bounce. Guess we have to retrain the liver after those sustained highs? nailbite_smile

Re: 1/31 Chip AMPS 122 +4 287 +9 382 Bolus is *N*

No video but We can make one for you tomorrow.

So you gave an N bolus? It will be interesting to see how he deals with it.

I think he will need more *N* than 0.25U here, unless it causes instant wonkiness?

Looks like what might be going on is wild swinging, including that full 72 hour pink/red bounce.

Re: 1/31 Chip AMPS 122 +4 287 +9 382 Bolus is *N* PMPS 427

Actually it's not really swinging since the up and down are so slow.

It's just that there is about 5 times more up than down. ohmygod_smile

If this nasty bounce lasts 6 cycles, I suppose that's 6 chances to make it worse with N.

Re: 1/31 Chip AMPS 122 +4 287 +9 382 Bolus is *N* PMPS 427

I wonder if that's the way it works?

Does it stay down if you get it down?

Or does it wear off and go right back up?

I don't know about N. I know for some cats, the R can grab onto Lev and help flatten the numbers out...if its given right and at the right time.

Re: 1/31 Chip AMPS 122 +9 382 Bolus is *N* PMPS 427 +2 244

Guess I get to find out.

There's our bolus apparently checking in.

Cool Beans!

As Libby very importantly pointed out, a bolus (especially of NPH) is probably not appropriate or useful for your typical wildly bouncing cat.

But for certain flat high numbers or in case of Chip, very predictable plodding changes, this bolus is looking promising. :thumbup
