Re: 1/30 Larry (unable to get amps)

Based on Larry's SS, 1.5 units looks like a safe dose. Hope he will cooperate so you can get a few successful tests in later.

Good luck!

See my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools for other assessments you can make to see how your cat is doing.

In particular, check out ketone testing. Ketones form as a by-product of fat breakdown for calories. Too many may result in diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially fatal, expensive to treat, complication of diabetes.

Re: 1/30 Larry (unable to get amps) +6 317

we appreciate u all!
i just edited the title but it didnt work. going to try again. got a plus6 and a plus8 :)
hes not real high, on the bright side.
on the down side, his ears have a lot of big red spots bc i am not vry good at staunching blood. i am treating and putting blood on glucometer, and hes shaking his ear, and hates it being staunched.
i feel like a mean mama :(

Re: 1/30 Larry (unable to get amps) +6 317 +8 372

i have another question, too.
if i am supposed to do his preshots an hr. b4 his shot...do i post them under 11+ or pmps?
confused.

Re: 1/30 Larry (unable to get amps) +6 317 +8 372

Put the strip halfway in the meter.
Prick the ear.
Snag the droplet on a clean fingernail, then pinch the ear with one hand while pushing the strip the rest of the way into the meter. Then test. ... and wash your hands.

What you might do is slightly revise your spreadsheet to put the pre-shot test in +11, and label the normal pre-shot column 'Wait'

Re: 1/30 Larry (unable to get amps) +6 317 +8 372

lots of good ideas bj. will try it.
what does the word "wait" mean? if i put that?

Re: 1/30 Larry (unable to get amps) +6 317 +8 372

thats what i thot, sue.
wondering if i should go back to 2U tonight? or wait and see what the test says?

Re: 1/30 Larry (unable to get amps) +6 317 +8 372

He is going to be above 400 (unless something weird happens) so I like the 2 units again. Tomorrow, if you can get an amps and can test during the day, I'd be tempted to up the dose to 2.25. It could mean a lower overall cycle that lasts a little longer; it could mean a shorter harsher cycle with a deeper drop. We'll just have to see.

Re: 1/30 Larry (unable to get amps) +6 317 +8 372

The wait is for the food to get started absorbing before injecting the N insulin.
So you'd test at +11 and feed, then shoot @ "0"

Re: 1/30 Larry (unable to get amps) +6 317 +8 372

ok thanks!
so the +11 (roughly) is 404. so just based on the #s we have....he didnt get as high with the 1.5 U. (we dont know how low he got) so suggestions? stay at 1.5 or back to 2.0? or...?

Re: 1/30 Larry (unable to get amps) +6 317 +8 372

I'd try the 2, as long as you can monitor. My thinking is that he didn't go as high for pmps with 1.5, but if a higher dose brings the overall numbers down, that'd be good. The tests will tell us.

I would return to the 2 unit dose too if he were my kitty. :-D He didn't get into the 500s but 400 is plenty high enough to show he could use the 2 units again.
Plus he was in the 300s at +6 when perhaps the 2 units would have brought him lower.

Hang in there!

Earlier you asked how much to feed Larry. Here is the formula I used, found at www.catinfo.org

13.6 x optimal lean body weight (lbs.) + 70 = calories per day

  • For example my cat, BigMac, was a male Maine Coon and naturally larger than average. A lean healthy weight for him was 16 lbs.
    13.6 x 16 lbs. + 70 = 287.6 calories per day.
I fed him three Fancy Feast classics which averaged around 90 calories per 3oz. can. Plus the treats he received when getting blood tests.
That averaged around 280-300 calories a day and worked well for him.

If Larry's idea weight is 14 lbs. then 13.6 x 14 lbs. + 70 = 260.4 calories a day.

BUT while Larry is not quite regulated he will need more calories since his body is not using the fuel properly at this time.
I wouldn't hold him to that formula just yet. Let him eat more because his body needs it. I'm not saying to go crazy with food because that may cause him to gain too much!
But don't be too restrictive in these early days of treating him with insulin. If he continues to seem very hungry, it is because he needs a little more than normal.

This is a general idea and of course every cat should be assessed individually.

Hope this makes sense.

thanks carolyn!
unable to sleep, darn insomnia....so got a +2 of 312. disappointed as i feel it should be lower. i gave 2U for his pm shot.
i also notice i somehow erased my other pm test i got one night. grrr. i dont remember the number, and its gone. oh well.
see u tmrw dear friends. hugs to all.
