Drat, didn't get a +5 reading. Was out in the horse pen trying to get my pony up. He is not feeling very well and I fear for him. No decent vet in this town and I'll have to call the one that is 50 miles out of town. I may have to put him down and I don't want to. I love my pony.

Lots of well wishes and good luck coming from Kitten and myself! Hope things start looking up....

Oh, Sue, I feel so sad for you. That's got to be so hard for you to have your beloved pony sick and not to have a vet nearby that you can rely on to help. Hope somehow you're able to get the care you need for your pony.

All of us here will be thinking of you and your pony, Sue, and of Sam, too.

Sending lots of healing vibes to you for your dear pony.

Thank you, he was down when I got home and I had a heck of a time getting him up again. I did get his halter on and when he felt me tug on it, he got up. He can barely walk right now, even though he's on a mega-dose of Bute. Poor Chester, he's having a really bad laminitis "episode".

Sending lots of healing vibes for Chester..man I know that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach when you see a horse down...I bred and trained Arabians for a lot of years and have spent more than my share of time sitting up with sick ones and walking off colic etc. What's wrong with the little guy?

He's got laminitis from foundering this spring really badly. He got out into the green grass for a couple of hours before we noticed the gate was open. I am going to have to put him down if this keeps up. He usually gets better if he's on Bute, but not this time. He's down more than up and he was up again at lunch today but down this morning. He was trimmed a couple of weeks ago but should be over that by now. I did drop his dose of bute today.

Luckily I have only limited experience with laminitis...Arabs have awesome feet...but a couple question come to mind from what I do remember from the couple of times that I have dealt with it...What is the surface that he spends most of his time on? I know with my one mare that did come down with it, we had to keep her in a stall with thick sawdust shavings and sand to lessen the pressure on that hoof. Also we were encouraged to get her to lay down as much as possible again to take the pressure off the foot. Naturally we couldn't leave her down all the time, so we would walk her daily but let her go down as long as she was resting comfortably.

Is he on any fluids or antibotics? I don't remember off hand what we were given for her but I do remember having to keep her on antibotics and also constantly checking the foot to make sure she didn't have any absesses that needs draining. I also had to have her shoed with corrective shoes while she was lame, whereas normally my arabs all ran barefoot. As well as giving her fluids for awhile.

The only other thing I can think of is if you have the ability to do it, is setting him up in a stall in a belly sling so he can be up but not putting weight on the bad leg.

Sure hope you can get the little guy well and not have to put him down...I'll be saying extra prayers for him.

Thanks for the ideas. He is mostly on soft ground, in a padded shelter. I don't have any way to sling him up at all. The farrier didn't find any abcesses in his feet so he is not on any antibiotics at all. I do try and let him lay as much as he wants but when he poops where he lays, that's not good at all.
