1/20 Max -looking for advice on BGLs going up with EZComplete premix again

I posted this in the main forum yesterday but haven’t gotten any replies as yet, so reposting here for help...

Same issue I faced in December with Max after feeding Food Fur Life premix. I have adjusted things to rule out protein issues, sodium levels, extra additives, etc.
Max had been given tiny bits of FortiFlora too back in Dec but I have stopped that as well.
The only thing I can think of is could the homemade food be digesting SLOWER and thus keeping BGLs elevated for longer periods?
In the last four days, he’s ran 95, 140, 113 and 141. Those have all been tests 2-4 hours after he’s eaten, but I haven’t set a timer for X hours after eating or been testing at the same times each day.
 
When were his last labs done? Do you think he might need his teeth cleaned? Litter box activity normal? I haven’t heard people having issues with Food Fur Life but anything is possible.
 
His last labs were in October at the ER vet after the coyote attack. I never got copies and totally forgot to ask for them. I was told the only thing off was his kidney values...he got IV fluids and they came down but started creeping back up when he was discharged. Our vet said start of CKD, which given his age, wasn’t a shock. That’s one reason I wanted this food for him as well- it’s had great results with CKD kitties (my other cat is farther advanced with kidney disease).
He’s never had his teeth cleaned - just not something our vet ever touched on!
What seems so weird is he went back to his normal BG levels with in only a few days when I stopped feeding the turkey & beef food I made. I had high hopes that feeding the same protein he’d been currently eating and grinding it myself would be the key.
As long as he gets his Miralax 1-2x/day, pooping is normal and no peeing outside of the litter box or anything. He drinks from one water fountain, but he’s not camping out there, so it appears that the only difference is the spot checks!
I honestly wouldn’t know anything was off if I wasn’t doing the spot tests. He’s settled in to only being allowed out in the fenced backyard during the day and using a litter box. When he was DXd he was only going to the bathroom outside (where he stayed during the day) but started peeing in the house in the kitchen!
Dumb to ask, but is it worth going back to doing AMBG & PMBG tests again? If it is the food, can that bump him back into needing insulin at levels in the 140s?
I’m not opposed to keeping him on the Weruva food, but once he gets a whiff off the homemade food that’s all he wants. They are supposed to have less stool on raw, but that’s because they digest the food better, is it not? Could that keep BGLs up?
Sorry, I may never know why this is happening, but I finally found a food BOTH cats freaking LOVE, AND it’s good for them. :banghead::arghh::(:mad:
 
I think it’s a good idea to check his BG before eating and then 2-4 hours after to see what happens. You could try that with the homemade and then if it’s high with other food to see if the premix is the problem.
 
Not going to be much help here other than to say I also recently switched butters to homemade raw made with EZ Complete, in late November. It's funny to hear you mention it, because I had thought it was impacting Butters' numbers. However I stuck with the new food regimen because from a LC ingredient perspective it didn't make sense that it would be affecting them. I had to raise her insulin quite a bit starting around that time but now she seems to be pretty well regulated lately and her insulin dose has gone down almost back to what it was when I started her on the EZ Complete. Totally different situation though because Max isn't on insulin and because there are like so many other things that could have been impacting Butters' numbers. But I just wanted you to know you are not the only person to have thought this.

Aw, that DOES help, thank you! I tested Max three times yesterday knowing exactly when he’d eaten and while he was above his normal mid 80s he was in the very low 100s, so yay for that! Hubby fed him this morning without telling me, so I missed his AM test when I went to feed him. His test this afternoon was 75! There was so little blood that I didn’t have enough to get a second test. I tried a few hours later but his ears weren’t cooperating and he was getting very miffed. I had to pull out the leather glove so he could dig a few claws in and bite me. Decided it wasn’t worth it. I’ll try later tonight or start over tomorrow..,
But thank you. It’s good to know maybe I’m not crazy! I started to think I was possibly just testing too soon after he’d been fed (since were all home maybe others here fed him even though I’m Food Lady, lol). Who knows, maybe their body has to purge the ‘junk’ out of their system first, and that’s what we saw??
