Your photo of Mocha made me giggle!! Poor, tired girl. Bathing is such hard work.

I hope you're not getting our weather (although, I suspect you are).

How sweet! I hope she woke up soon though. Thanks for getting to our condo as often as you do . No worries today.

Cute picture of Mocha

So guess what Leroy has recently discovered? The top of the kitchen cabinets.... on the stove side of the wall  ohmygod_smile Now, there's nothing up there but dust bunnies so no idea why Leroy got up there in the first place. He gets up on the counter next to the stove, then gets on the top of the fridge, and then onto the top of the cabinets. But he doesn't do the reverse to get down. Instead, he leans over, puts his front paws on the top of the over-the-stove microwave/exhaust hood (it sticks out a few inches away from the cabinets), then jumps, landing on the edge of the stove first, and then onto the floor ohmygod_smile @-) He still hasn't learned his lesson about the stove after burning his paw on it ohmygod_smile I so do not want him up there, especially NOT while I'm cooking @-) Firmly telling him NO doesn't work @-)

I'm going to get a deterrent thingy but can't decide which one would work on Leroy :? Anyone have opinions on any of these?

I was thinking something on the counter between the fridge and stove, something for the top of the fridge (about 4 inches of the fridge sticks out from underneath the cabinets), and something for the cabinets directly above the fridge since that's where Leroy goes first.

Leroy does have a 6 foot cat tree, Emma to play with, er, annoy really, and plenty of toys that he has no interest in

sounds like a typical aby almost impossible to keep them away from stuff we just lock ours up when cooking a friend in Kansas who has 3 of ours also does the same thing you will learn that owning a aby is just different

I can attest that the scat mat does work. Doobie (our civie) would climb on the pantry shelves, knocking everything all over the place. We put a scat mat (set on low) on the pantry floor to keep him out of there. Well, one groggy morning I stepped into the pantry barefooted to reach for my tea and did a very interesting little jig. It's not really painful; but it is totally surprising and WILL get your attention. I almost didn't want my morning tea for a few days!

love the pic of Mocha and @ Linda I love scat matts as well have used them only at closed doors here to prevent banging but LOL even blind Do Lou has mastered them even without sight he can hear its on and has learned to push it aside abys are pretty darn smart Do Lou loves to door bang

We have a civvie who is just about a year old and the most hard headed, obnoxious and dog like cat I have ever met. We tried the puff of air - that actually DID work to keep him off our counters, but the dang thing was SO sensitive that it was going off when we were 20ft away in the living room. The scat mat...worked for what it was, but he was pretty quick to learn to just avoid the mat and work around it.

After probably 8 months of trying everything we could think of we got an indoor invisible fence. He wears a collar that beeps when he gets too close to his boundry line. If he crosses he gets a mild correction...very similar to the scat mat shock. Best money we've ever spent, and despite my reservations on getting it he doesn't seem to notice or be upset by it in the least.

OMG Devon!!!! So funny. This is only the third picture of Mocha I've ever even seen! She and Merlin look a lot alike now that he's not as creamy....he's becoming a black bear too.
Thanks for sharing.

So glad everyone enjoyed mocha's pic! After we snapped the pic, we touched her tongue three times before she even woke up  Then when she did, she slurped it right back in and looked at us as if she was saying "what?"

Traci, the transformation has begun .. can't stop him now! ohmygod_smile

here's a photo of mocha, from the first day we brought her home

she looks so comfy in that just-home picture! love the tongue pic of mocha too. silly kitter.

squeem, have you ever tried loops of duct tape that are sticky-side out? cats hate the feeling of adhesive on their feet. i think i'd decorate the place with the loops for a while. and invite us over to see your new decor after you do it! ;-)

Squeem-

Merlin sounds similar to your Leroy. nailbite_smile
I bought carpet liner (clear with spikes) and put it all over my counters to keep him off. The stuff is SO spikey I was hurting myself - but not Merlin. I've come into the kitchen MANY times and saw him standing on the spikes looking at me totally unphased. The spikes don't hurt him!
Next I got burner covers. I have two rectangle thingies that cover 2 burners at a time. This puts me at ease. I also take the burner switches off. I've since taken the carpet liner off the counters and he's stopped jumping up except every once in a while. I still have to watch him while I cook. You never know with him. I've seen him randomly decide to jump up on the stove. I'm soooooooo paranoid of accidents in this house. I've had some pretty crazy stuff happen.

Good luck. I'll be curious to hear what you end up doing and if it works.

I have a flat glass top stove so to Leroy it's just part of the counter ohmygod_smile Though I don't think a stove with burners and the grates would keep Leroy off anyways  My stove surface stays HOT long after it's been turned off so I can't leave it unattended until it completely cools off.

I haven't tried that. But it's an inexpenive way to try first. Maybe I'll get a piece of plastic board or something and put the duct tape on that so I don't end up with sticky goo on the fridge or counter or cabinet tops that attracts dirt.

If that doesn't work, then I'll try the mat with the spikes and then the scat mat.

They sure are  I'm still wondering why Squishy picked Leroy for me confused_cat I knew Abys were active but I didn't expect them to be troublemaker busy bodies who must be constantly underfoot and be in all the action :o And I was going to get two of them

This is why I keep my bedroom door closed whenever I'm not home. I do not want to come back to Squishy all over the floor  Emma and Leroy occasionally visit Squishy but I always quickly get them off before they start knocking candle holders and stuff off nailbite_smile

Absolutely LOVE both pictures of Mocha! Rusty often sleeps with his tongue out, too, but he has no top teeth in front, so it just sort of goes out through the gap!
Devon, thanks for visiting Rusty so often and always being upbeat. I'm so glad you're staying on the board.

Squeem, This might be a good opportunity to trade in that electric stove for a gas model! (if you can). I'd switch to gas in a heartbeat, but natural gas isn't available where we live now, and we don't want to go the propane route. Fortunately, Rusty is not a counter jumper.

Unfortunately, I can't :? I asked about that before I bought the place. There is gas heat but no gas line to the kitchen and to actually do that would be really expensive. I don't cook much anyways so it's not a big deal. Though it is frustrating when it takes over half an hour to get a large pot of water to even start simmering @-) Not sure if an electric stove with the coils would make any difference.

only danger in the invisible fence unless its changed the cat can hang themselves with the collar this terrible tragedy happened to my vets wife's cat who came home to find her favorite girl dead hung by the collar for they had used this very means as you describe so unless its changed its very dangerous for cats JMO

this is why I question my pet buyers a LOT if they have never owned a aby since as much as I simply adore the breed they are not for everyone you have to realize you just cannot change how they are you can try but in the end the aby is going to win so IMO to make life easier on you to just try to make your place as aby friendly as possible it will make things easier in the long run

oh squeem, i had to stop and scratch my head over finding squishy all over the floor! i'm with you (once i figured it out!) squishy needs to stay in his sweet little spot! ;-) NONE of us wants you to find squishy on the floor!

my daughter had 2 counter jumpers and no one was there during the day, so those kitters thought they owned the counters. she finally put loops of duct tape along the counters, you only have to stick down either end and the majority of it is just going to be sitting there upside down, so it shouldn't be too bad for the counters.

devon, i want to say thanks to you and celi both for staying on the board. you both bring so much cheer to those of us still in the trenches. i know how much i appreciate it. so thanks!

yay for friday night! wahoo!

btw - re abys - i saw something that said the breed of cat with the highest percentage with diabetes was abys. burmese were next.

I have never heard or read this Julie would like to see where you got your information confused_cat confused_cat

i'm looking lisa. here's the one that mentions burmese, and i could be mixing them up. i'll keep looking, however, because i did think that i saw abys mentioned somewhere.

this is from a document (which i can attach if you want) "AAHA Diabetes Guidelines for Dogs & Cats"
In both dogs and cats, DM is caused by loss or dysfunction of pancreatic beta cells. In the dog, beta cell loss tends to be rapid and progressive, and it is usually due to immune-mediated destruction, vacuolar degeneration, or pancreatitis.

1Intact females may be transiently diabetic due to the insulin-resistant effects of the diestrus phase. In the cat, loss or dysfunction of beta cells is the result of insulin resistance, islet amyloidosis, or chronic lymphoplasma cytic pancreatitis.

2Risk factors for both dogs and cats include insulin resistance caused by obesity, other diseases (e.g., acromegaly in cats, hyperadrenocorticism in dogs), or medications (e.g., steroids, progestins). Genetics is a suspected risk factor, and certain breeds of dogs (Australian terriers, beagles, Samoyeds, keeshonden 3) and cats (Burmese4) are more susceptible.

Hi Squeem-

If you want to get a long strip of the matt with spikes, go to Walmart, it's cheap there. You can also cut it to fit your space.

I know about the stove you're talking about. My brother used to have one of those stoves and their cats were counter jumpers. I thought there would be an accident but there never was thank goodness. I wonder if there is something you could cover the stove with when it's cooling. Maybe there is some kind of cover available from the manufacturer? I'm sure people with kids would be very wary of this too....it's dangerous! Thank goodness you don't cook often. Imagine having to guard the stove after you cooked every time???

Mocha is adorable! I do have a bias...Henry as a baby and now, at 7 (my civie).

henry is adorable!

i guess i didn't know that their hair got so much darker as they grew up - both both mocha and henry look pretty pale as kittens and now fairly brown. is that just the pics or did they really get darker?

So much cuteness going on here today! Just wanted to add my thanks to Devon for popping in to visit Vyktor's condo and leaving cheery messages for us :-D

awww henry is adorable!

Julie, no, the pictures tell it like it is .. she started out super creamy (Mocha Jo Latte) and now we call her Big Brown ..

My place is definitely Aby-proof except for those darn kitchen cabinets and stove. I have to keep my place pretty clean because Leroy eats dust bunnies and carpet fuzz from the cat tree ohmygod_smile

When Leroy's not being a PITA troublemaker, he loves to snuggle and play... and annoy Emma

I should have mentioned that Squishy is my GA for those who never knew him. Yes, Squishy Merlin all over the floor would be BAD

I'm sure Leroy gets up on the cabinets when I'm not home  The air puff thing might work if I put it on top of the cabinets so it's not being set off my me walking around. Emma only goes as far as the kitchen counter by the sink.

I'll take a look at Wal Mart

I do guard the kitchen when I'm cooking, just in case nailbite_smile Although lately Leroy has been lying on the dining table chair so I don't need to worry about him too much. Emma might walk into the kitchen and just sit and talk to me. When I used my oven for the first time the other week, I guarded that kitchen like a hawk. Fortunately both civies stayed away, even when I opened the oven door a few times to check on the chicken. The stove usually cools off a good deal by the time the dishes are washed. It's teeth brushing time and play time after that so that keeps both occupied and out of the kitchen.

Just thought of another "solution". Ditch the stove completely as a stove (keep it as a counter) and do all your cooking in a microwave. (of course you can't boil large pots of water in a microwave, but you'll adjust!!!!!!!)

Leroy says you have some choices:
1) just stop cooking
2) build him this: http://www.moderncat.net/2009/11/29/ano ... rom-japan/
3) kitchen remodel taking cabinets up to ceiling
4) kitty wins in the end!

Our Burmese used to love the above-cabinet spots! I think my mom gave up and just put kitty beds up there.

Hi Kim-

Who is the kitty in your avitar??? My Trinket looks like him/her!! She's a gray/lilac point long-haired siamese mix. The look very similar!!!

Henry is SO cute. The same thing happened to Merlin. I got him at one year and he was SO creamy and dreamy. In my avitar you can see his creamy fur. Now he's more chocolate.

Julie-it's my understanding that meezers get darker over time if they live in a cold climate. Meezers who live in warm climates stay light furred. They have a form of albinism-I don't know how to spell it -and depending on the temperature they live in their fur changes color as they grow up..

kim - loved that japanese house made special for their cats - that's awesome!

those kitties are just gorgeous - a cat with fur that changes color! nice!

What great pics in this condo but I LOVE Mocha's pic with her tongue out. How adorable is that???? And as a baby! She sure got darker.

Henry is also very darling! What a fun condo!

Having been the proud mama companion to several traditional, or apple head, Siamese, :-D I can tell you that all Siamese kittens are born white (colorless), and all of them have blue eyes, both a result of a genetic mutation -- a partial albinism gene, as Traci said. Their point colors start to develop at about 4 weeks old and are influenced by temperature, both internal and external. Color develops and deepens along the coolest parts of the body, such as the extremities, face, ears, and tail, while the warmer parts, such as around the neck and tummy, stay lighter. Kittens are white because the womb was warm. Overweight Siamese tend to be darker because the fat insulation causes the skin to produce more pigment.

Henry is a seal point; Booger (GA) was a seal point; and Bubba (GA) was a blue point.

That is Simon, my diabetic cat! I think he probably has some siamese or birman blood, but I have no papers or bloodlines! He was surrendered to a vet clinic where my aunt worked. She thought he had a funny personality and she asked if I wanted to adopt him.
He does have icy blue eyes, points, and a creamy coat, along with white booties like a Snowshoe.

wow randa, thanks for explaining all of that .. We never knew! We always joke with mocha (who was a barn cat, and the only meezer in the litter) that we are going to return her to her birthplace and tell them we want a replacement, a light colored kitty! Guess we can't threaten that now!

Hi Kim-

Wow! Simon is very cute. This is Trink. She broke her leg on Halloween so she's still got her harness on. It's healed now.

And you can see how dark Merlin's posterior is now.
