Vet drained the abscess. Chloe has lost weight, so she also did a senior lab test for kidney, thyroid, and pancreous. Will have the results tomorrow. Chloe got an antibiotic injection. Cost $274. Cheddar was smelling the carrier and Chloe herself and growling at both. I put him in the garage. He's a monster! Vet said it was a bite.

I hope Chloe feels better soon! :bighug:
Thanks, Chloe is feeling fine, but there's something wrong with Cheddar. I put him in the garage for the night and when I let him in this morning, he was growling and hissing at everybody. Now I'm worried he may have rabies. He didn't get his shots.

The vet said all the tests came back fine, except the blood glucose was very high. That's probably due to the abscess and vet visit. She and I are also concerned about Chloe's loss of weight. She wants me to return to 1 unit, but I sent her the lastest readings and asked her to reconsider. She replied that she is fine with me waiting a couple more days. What do you think? Also, I will only raise her by .25 increments. Why is Chloe losing so much weight when she is eating well?
@Diane Tyler's Mom @tiffmaxee

I kept her on the .25 dose because I don't want to stay up all night. I may raise her to .5 tomorrow morning if her numbers are higher than 200.

I don't agree with jumping up to 1u, that is not warranted, IMHO considering 0.5u brought Chloe to 36 (maybe lower) only 5 days ago. Hope the wound continues to heal, sorry to hear about the infection. I'd give it one more day before increasing back up to 0.5u, since as you know, the preshot numbers don't give the whole picture.

As for the weight loss, how much and within what period of time? It may be that while she is eating well, she needs more calories, you'd have to assess what she is being fed and whether it is in the range of calories required for an elderly cat. I like this info as a general guideline https://www.petplace.com/article/cats/pet-health/how-to-calculate-your-cats-daily-calorie-intake/

Cheddar is angry because you put him in the garage for the night. He is just expressing his feelings with you. He will get over it a day or two.

He's still growling and hissing at Chloe, even when she's 10 feet away from him.
Oh, so that is what is going on. I used to volunteer at an animal sanctuary. We had the same problem when we took one of the animals to the vet. The others would attack the one we took to the vet. IT IS THE SMELL !! Your other cat smells the strange vet smells on Chloe and even on you. Sometime, we had to keep them separated for over a week until the smell wore off.

Cheddar is reacting normally. You can check with an animal sanctuary and they will tell you the same thing. It can be stressful but everything will be ok. I guarantee it !!

That's quite a drop and she's unsteady on her paws. She eats well and moves around, but she's all skin and bones now. The senior panel the vet did said everything was normal.

I didn't see a new post for today, so I'll respond here, although it is usually best to not keep older posts going, so in the future, please start a new post for the day. If she is noticeably underweight, it may be a few things that could be responsible. Did your vet have any suggestions? I usually prefer to let the vet handle things like this, since a) I can't see Chloe, and they are able to better assess her condition with a proper physical exam, as well as labs and b) I'm just a regular person using a little of my own experience to try and help :), so just keep that in mind.

As I posted above, Chloe may not be getting enough calories each day, perhaps one of the other cats is eating her food, without you realizing? For a 10 lb inactive cat, you'd need minimum 218 calories a day, generally speaking. So with the 9-lives, depending on the variety, you'd be in the range of 1 1/4 can a day. Is that how much she is eating? You have noted she is underweight, and if you are feeding about 218 calories a day, and the other cats aren't getting into her food, then you may want to bump up her food intake to get at least around 260 -300 calories a day to see if that helps put weight on.

I can't speak to why she is losing weight, yet the blood work is normal, since I don't see them posted in your SS, but did they run a thyroid test (either a T3 or T4)? I think the T4 does come with a senior panel. Was that normal? The other thing you may need to rule out is intestinal parasites, especially if she goes outdoors.

My first thought was that she wasn't getting enough calories, but I'm adding some other things you may want to run by your vet, although I would hope they came up in your vet visit, but if they didn't, I'd ask just so they can be ruled out.

I'm letting her eat as much as she wants. She usually lets me know when she is hungry. She eats at least one 5.5 can of 9-Lives each day. She does share with Fuzma, but I don't think Fuzma eats as much. I split 2 cans per day between the two of them. The only thing the vet was concerned about was her BG being very high, although she didn't give me a number. I just assumed it was because she was stressed from being at the vet's all day. I know she checked her thyroid. On Monday, I'll ask her to email me all the results of the panel.They don't have an xray machine, so couldn't test for internal things. Chloe does not go outside at all, so it can't be a parasite. If it's cancer, I don't want to know. I will feed her more.

Let's see if giving a little extra food helps put some weight on. As you've noted if she and Fuzma share a can a day, that's technically still a little less than ideal calorie intake. At this point because you feel she is underweight, I'd give her exclusively another extra 1/2 can. Hope this helps.
