Oh what a blue-tiful morning!!!!

Just when I'm about to throw up my hands and start looking at a different insulin for her....she pulls a day like yesterday, okay so not really pleased with how last night started out but then again it was fairly expected after that long run of blue and even green. And now this morning :o ..I actually tested her twice to make sure I was seeing what I was seeing on the meter. But since the first test was 175 & the second 177 I guess I have to believe it, she really is in the blue, what a great way to start the morning.

Re: 1/19 Musette amps 177

I got a good laugh last night...I couldn't figure out why Maxwell wouldn't come to bed with me, he just kept laying on the floor next to the dresser...I would call him, he would meow at me but wouldn't get up to come to bed...then I see a little bit of pink sticking out underneath him...Well his old testing blanket must have fallen on the floor when I was digging out some sweatshirts yesterday...He was waiting for Mom to come test him!!...   So I get back out of bed, grab his testing kit and treats, test and hand over the treat...As soon as he heard his meter beep he goes flying for his spot on the bed, and cuddled up purring. BTW he tested 61 so it wasn't like he didn't feel right, he just knew that when that blankie is out that he is suppose to be tested, and he wasn't gonna move until mom got her act together. ohmygod_smile

LOL that's adorable. Hobbs sometimes goes to the table where I test him and looks for treats. I wonder if him having a blanket or towel to lay on would make it easier for him. Hmmm. (I do it on the table b/c it's eaiser for me to have him up instead of me getting down on the floor. I of course clean the table off before we do any eating or food things though. :) )

Re: 1/19 Musette amps 177, +2~177

When I first started testing Maxwell we started with the blanket because I was testing him on our bed, and I didn't want to be cleaning blood splatter off the pillows...Now if he sees his little pink blankie he just jumps up wherever it is and lays down to be tested. Both he and Musette have separate testing blankies (I crochet a lot..lol) They are also both trained to come to different key words...Maxwell it is EARS! and Musette it is Pokies! Maxwell is so good about his blanket for tests that he has gone with me to several of the vet clinics and local shelters to give demos on home testing...He also goes with me to the local hospital once a month to show little kids that are newly dxed diabetics that tests and shots are nothing to be scared of...If a little kitty cat can do it and purr, you can do it too. :-D

You are like superwoman. I mean the showing people how to test and helping diabetic kids is all well and good but you TRAINED A CAT TO COME ON COMMAND???? That's impressive. How did you do that? LOL

Re: 1/19 Musette amps 177, +2~177, +4~102

lol well first you have to have a cat that is willing to be trained...lol. Seriously, I use to train horses for a lot of years and training cats is a lot like training horses, except cats don't have baseball bats on the ends of their legs that can take your head off your shoulders, but it works the same way. It also works just like training them to come to their testing spots...TREATS! All 13 of mine know their names and will come when called. With most of mine I started with them as kittens, but I'm finding that it works just as well with my older kids. It's pretty easy, it takes a bag of treats and a clicker, and lots of patiences. You start out with the clicker and the treats...You first train them that when they hear the clicker it means treat..So for awhile it is sitting with them and click then toss a treat, click toss a treat, until when they hear that click they look for the treat...then you go to adding what you want them to do...Call their name...if they at least look your direction you click the clicker and toss the treat, when they will always look your direction at the sound of their name, you move to the next step..call their name and wait until they are least start towards you, then click and treat...You just have to break down what you want them to do into baby steps, everytime they do what you want correctly they get their treat, and you tie the action with the command word.

You can also substitute the clicker with a word...like Yes, or Right...pretty soon you can drop off the clicker and just go with the treat for the right action, then slowly wean them off the treat and just use praise and loving for the reward...So far this has worked with horses, cats and dogs. Back when I still had my horses I had then not only voice trained but also hand signal trained, I could walk out into the pasture and call in just which horse I wanted, then I could get that horse to do what I wanted by either a voice cue or a hand signal...our dog now is trained to both hand signals and voice, so that if I need him to do something but don't want to alert the whole neighborhood of my presences I can give him a hand signal and he does it.

The most important thing to remember when training any animal is that when people use the phrase it is a dumb animal it doesn't mean they are stupid, it means without voice, just because they don't speak our language doesn't mean they can't think and learn. Cats are very smart, and because they are smart you have to learn to train them so they think it is their idea to do what you are asking because their is something in it for them...lol. Be that praise, food, or a good brushing, whatever trips their trigger is what you use to train them...Musette it is cream cheese, Maxwell it is a good brushing, with my drooler it is hot dogs, with my stallion it was peppermint candies. You find what they really really love and go from there.

Now that is what I call one beautiful day...now as long as she doesn't bounce by morning. <fingers crossed>

Her average for today...147!! I couldn't ask for much better right now I think this is the longest run of fairly good numbers I have seen her have in 6 months!

It maybe that I have finally found her magic dose...Man it took long enough.

wow, congratulations on a good day with Musette! Its great to hear all about the testing and special blankies, too. Louie has two alternating blankies that he loves and comes right over and starts kneading them. I'm finally getting that this is a special ritual with love and talking to him and tasty treats~ he really responds to that and comes right over for testing time!
What a relief to see Musette's numbers so nice today~

"Her average for today...147!! I couldn't ask for much better right now I think this is the longest run of fairly good numbers I have seen her have in 6 months!" -- So happy to read this, Mel! And even with the bounce this morning, looks like you're finding a good dose for sweet Musette. Doesn't she seem to be clearing bounces more quickly in recent days?

Eva

Yes she does..we had another one this morning but now I think we are on the right dose, it is just getting her liver use to the feel of those lower numbers. Not only do they seem to be clearing quicker they don't seem like they are so high either..Before after a run like she had yesterday today she would have been in the high reds if not over into the black...So 368 isn't really as bad as it normally would have been. She also didn't seem as unhappy about that number either this morning, she was still purring and bright eyed, where again normally her tortie-tude would have been at full force.

My husband and I were both smiling as I read this to him, Mel.
