Huh?
He is having a bad day with the pooping. He got me while I was at work and while I was sleeping today. I went to clean him and he gave me a gutteral get the heck away from me warning.
I suppose I am going to have to break down and give him a steroid shot. I thought he was doing better until now.

What exactly is the Dexamethasone supposed to help with? The runny poo or intestinal inflammation or both? I would assume the inflammation for sure 'cause that's what steroids are best at.

Just found a site by a veterinarian which has some good info.http://www.2ndchance.info/inflambowelcat.htm It mentions budesonide with the comment that it has less systemic side effects and be less likely to cause diabetes in cats, so I assume that means it might be better for diabetic cats.

Here's a thread from the board a while back about both meds: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?p=72639

Another good article: http://pets.webmd.com/cats/inflammatory-bowel-disease-cats

And marvistavet's Budesonide page: http://marvistavet.com/html/budesonide.html Doesn't seem as promising as the first article made it sound.

Hope that gives you some options. Mickey, we want you to feel better, buddy. cat_pet_icon

Wow, thanks for all of the links!

Did you ever hear of anyone using sucralfate? It is used for ulcers in cats. Heals the lining of stomach etc.
I was in touch with a woman on FD facebook and she uses it for her cat with IBD and said it started to work in 4-5 days.
Gonna have to call my vet on that one.

No, had to look that one up too. Looks like it's prescribed solely for treatment of ulcers in upper GI tract to stomach. Not sure how that would help the intestines, but ask your vet.

Sounds like side effects are mild, constipation is mentioned, I guess that wouldn't be a bad thing in Mickey's case!

Those are weird numbers. Maybe just a weird day, but could he have gone lower overnight? Can you do a curve before the next schedule change? It would be interesting to see that that dose is doing for the whole cycle.

Ugh, I hate cleaning them up when they have poo all over their butts. Jeddie is pretty patient about it, lets me cradle him in one arm while I clean with the other hand, but he is so big it is hard for me to hold him like that for very long - and he won't stay that way for more than a minute, but that is about forever compared to all the other cats I have ever tried to clean up.

Yes, I agree it is difficult cleaning butts. Mickey is so sore back there. I am lucky to get a warm paper towel on him. Thats why I get my vet tech to come over for washings in the sink. She is coming Friday afternoon.
I would do it myself but learned rather fast he wins every time.

Constipation would be good for a few days in his case Vicky!

The next time I can get a curve going is going to be on Monday or Tuesday/day off. For now its only going to be +6 through +11 with working and sleeping. :YMSIGH:

I know with multiple cats it is really difficult to feed a raw diet, but maybe that would be the answer if you could feed him by himself somewhere?

My brother's 3 year old was having diarrhea problems - going everywhere except the box. When they stayed here for a week and we cat sat for them, she was going all over my house. Yuck! I thought at first that maybe she was just stressed, but then I took her off the Fancy Feast and the other assorted lower quality canned food they had brought and started feeding her some raw. She stopped the diarrhea within a day.

So when she went home she started in again at their house because they started feeding her the canned food they had on hand. So then they went out and bought some frozen raw and then she was fine. They haven't had any problems since.

How is it going with Thomas? Did the spirit essences come yet?
