Lucy continues to be a menace who wants to eat everything ever. I fed her and gave her dose around 12pm today and she was hunting for food an hour later, what a scamp!

I'm going to bring it up to my vet/coworker again, she suggested getting Lucy more food (which we did up from 1/2th a can to 2/3rds a can) but she's still crazy about it. It's like my girl doesn't care I spend all my money getting her healthy again or something. Or she's trying to make me die young with the constant stress she's giving me.

I think I'm going to attempt a Glucose Curve this weekend, I'm gonna talk with my vet about it because her numbers have been low lately and I'll have the weekend off + new strips for my AT3. We're trying not to wiggle her dose too much, but 1 unit seems to be too little, but 1.5 is too much, and my insulin pen doesn't do quarter doses.

But man... yall weren't lying that the AT3 strips cost an arm and a leg! Please forgive me if I'm not doing as much as I could, I'm not really in a position to use these strips more than absolute necessary 😅

Have you looked into Countour Next for a meter/strips? I think they’re available in Canada and surely would be less expensive than AT3 strips.

I’ve never used the insulin pens, but isn’t there a way to draw from it with a syringe?

I’d imagine once she gets more stable the hunger level would decrease a little bit. It’s bad though I remember how crazy he would get for food too. Kind of miss those days, appetite-wise…

I actually wouldn’t say 1u is too little. Since you are dosing based on preshots, you aren’t really seeing how low the dose is taking Lucy, so for safety, and since you can’t test as much mid cycle to see how low the dose is taking Lucy, and given that it appears Lucy experienced a symptomatic hypo several days ago, I would suggest erring on the side of caution.

Hoping the curve this weekend helps you to get some clarity.

I didn’t realize you were dosing by pen; since the pen doses in 1u increments, how are you getting 1.5u? You can just insert the insulin syringe in the pen cartridge to draw out the amount you need. Just make sure you use U100 insulin syringes with half unit markings. Here is a pic of a pen,

and one of just the cartridge, which is what I used to use.

I'm gonna see what I can talk to my work about, they gave me the pen because it was easier for my phobias to handle (part of the phobia is messing up the dose) but it only does half units, the syringes I have were just regular units (no halves, no quarters) so I'd need to find the syringes for the specific dose.

Also, as much as I'd like to change my Glucometer to a cheaper brand - it's what my vet uses and it's just way easier to talk about numbers + features with them. Sucks they cost an arm and a leg tho, but at least my work does an "IOU" system where I can pay when I have the funds.

There are a few options for blood glucose meters in Canada. The Freestyle Lite also needs just a small blood drop like the AT. At least on the west coast, it seems to have the cheapest test strips. I've also seen people source cheaper test strips from Ebay. How often do you talk to your vet about blood glucose numbers? It's much safer to test more with cheaper test strips.

I agree with Christie, I think 1.0 units could be a better dose. 1.5 units is too much. Normally we'd suggest 1.25 units which you can eye ball between the 1/2 unit marks on a syringe. I also used the Lantus cartridges.
