Hi friends! Sadye here...I had Bodie a couple years ago who you all helped me with SO much. He passed, but now I am trying to help a new kitty friend get settled into life with diabetes. His foster human will be joining officially ASAP and take over questioning the group herself. I'm going to help her navigate the forum as soon as we can sit down.

IN the meantime, can you all please advise:
1- How many small meals a day do you feed your kitties on Lantus? And about what times? ( I know this will get WAY more specific as she gets a spreadsheet filled out and you guys can look and advise, but just for now, what's a safe bet)? Vinny is on Lantus, 1.0-1.5units every twelve hours right now.

2- Gauge lancet you find least painful and most effective? They're having a hard time with ear sticks. I THINK the 30 gauge may be too small. Was thinking of suggesting 28 gauge. THOUGHTS?

More to follow on Vinny as I help them get set up. Thank you!!

I'm still pretty new to all this but I figured I'd share my thoughts and experience.

I generally split Tessa's meals up into around 4-6 meals per day. Some days she might get an extra snack or two especially if her numbers are on the lower side. Or if she throws up after eating then I'll split her meals into even smaller portions and give a small bit once an hour like I did yesterday.

On a normal day, I tend to give 2-3 meals during the AM cycle and 2-3 meals during the PM cycle and she mostly gets food in the first half of each cycle unless she's really hungry, her numbers are really low, or if I've been out of the house all day (which is rare since I work from home). I put my meal times in Tessa's spreadsheet if you want to look at specific meal times and notes. Her shot times are 7am and 7pm.

I use 28 gauge lancets on Tessa but I will probably eventually change to 30 gauge. If your friend finds that 28 gauge is still too thin, Walmart does sell 26 gauge lancets and they're very cheap ($1.62 for 100 lancets): https://www.walmart.com/ip/ReliOn-Thin-Blood-Lancets-100-Count/34088206

thank you so much!

Hi. Thanks fir helping another fur baby. See if you can get the ss up asap. Bhoona @Bandit's Mom can help if you want. Also have her post an intro on main/health one she signs up.

I fed 3 mini meals each cycle and more if Max was getting too low.

Hi and welcome to the forum.:)
I notice you said 1 to 1.5 units of Lantus. It’s best to stay with the one dose of Lantus as Lantus is a depot insulin and if you chop and change the dose that messes up the depot and you won’t get consistent BGs. Information about the depot in the link below.
DEPOT INSULIN

If the foster carer can fill out the signature and set up the spreadsheet that will help us a lot

I
would recommend you get size 26 or 28 gauge lancets as they are easier for new members to get blood.
I would feed the snacks during the first half of the cycles.
