Good morning World! Yesterday

+10 - 252
AMPS -340 (food spike too)

I just know KT's dose is right at 2 units but we dance all around it and just can't seem to hit it dead on. I've decided that I'm going to have to stay at about 2 units and feed him extra when history says he's going to dive. I can't seem to control them with insulin so I have to change our approach.

The vet said to stop the Lasix yesterday and see what happens but he started putting on fluid again this morning, he just has a 'puffy' look. Looks like the poopy problem is solving itself thanks to FortiFlora and Jaclyn/Jacspets for sending it to us. It's cold and windy today so he's locked in his room again. Yesterday was beautiful and warm, he spent most of the day roaming the yard and laying in the sun. He's realized that he's going to get these pills daily - this morning I kneeled down, he scooted himself down between my legs into 'pill' position. HOW can someone not fight with him when he shows he wants to whip this badly too!!! Such an amazing little furperson.

We would like to share an extra thanks today to Ella/Rusty/Stu for sending us strips for our meter a few months ago. Now she's changing meters and having to buy those strips again. We SO appreciated the dance but feel bad that she's now having to buy more for herself.

Thoughts and prayers today for Lydia and Sid, (fight SidBaby) and Marjorie and Gracie/DM. Today I'll add an extra prayer or two for all our new extra sweet babies that have joined us lately. There just seems to be more and more extra sweet babies - I'm very thankful some find their way to us here.

Big hugs for all today,

Hi guys ... ugh .. do I ever remember dancing around 1 unit for mocha .. she could NEVER hold it! I hope that your new food approach works for KT .. Sorry to hear scruffy is starting to look poofy again, but how sweet he comes for his pills .. he knows you are fighting so hard for him .. Have a great day guys!

Re: 1/17 KT AMPS 340

I hope your new approach gets the results you are looking for. You know your kitty!

Maybe just a little longer on the lasix will do the trick for Scruffy. Keep fighting!

Re: 1/17 KT AMPS 340

Hi Lyresa,
I am really glad I sent you those strips!!! No regrets, and you shouldn't feel bad. You got to use them while they were still viable. If this whole meter thing hadn't come up with the FreeStyleLite, they would have expired long before I ever used them, and that would have been a waste! (And, besides, I held onto 1 box--the one I'm using now!)

KT may or may not settle down on your present dose, but don't be afraid to tinker with it, as well as with the foods. Sometimes it's just a drop in one direction or the other that will do the trick. But our kitties' insulin needs are always changing. We just have to keep up with those needs (l finally learned this lesson!!)

Are you giving Scruffy the lasix today? It sounds as if he could use some. It's really amazing how much he wants to help get his condition under control. Sending him lots of beautiful vines this afternoon.

Hugs,

Ella & Rusty

Questions:
* What part of the body uses glucose and insulin to create energy? Is that done at the cellular level or within an organ? KT is energetic like he has low numbers thru a bounce but if it's just high numbers, he's sort of lethargic and isn't in a good mood. Right now, his +3 said 405 :o but I'm going to retest shortly as I really don't believe that number. He's been either grazing for food, wanting scratches/pets or playing like a little kidiot for about two hours. This happens often...

* Anyone have a link to something like 'diabetes for dummies' that describes how it's supposed to work and what changes with diabetes?

This sounds like a question for Sienne, who knows a great deal about such things. Perhaps she'll be along later.

Glad that Scruffy peed 3 times!!

Ella's post made me giggle!!

Insulin isn't actually used to "create" energy. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose get into the cells where it can be utilized. All cells in the body require food. Glucose is that food. Everything that we eat that can be digested is metabolized into glucose. Insulin is manufactured in the beta cells of the Islets of Langerhans that are located in the pancreas. When these cells are damaged, they stop producing insulin or don't produce enough insulin to meet the body's demands. Insulin is used by roughly two-thirds of the body's cells to absorb glucose, to be converted into other molecules, or for storage (e.g., glycogen). When there's not enough insulin, rather than glucose getting into the cells, it remains in the blood in excessive amounts. This can cause organ damage if it goes on for overly long. It is also why a diabetic is ravenously hungry, eating copious amounts, and losing weight -- the nutrition isn't getting into the cells where it's needed. So basically, most parts of the body need glucose and those same parts need insulin to get glucose into those cells.

ETA: While it may not be "diabetes for dummies," the Wiki info is pretty good.
