Re: 1/16 Oliver AMPS 449

I would have shot through the bounce last night and reduced this morning. But, Kelly, it isn't wrong to not shoot through the bounce especially on a P.M. cycle if you need to rest. We never know when they will start clearing bounces quickly. I have shot through the bounce before on a rapidly rising number and had Gracie turn around and come right back down on the cycle I shot through the bounce on. Sometimes I elected to not shoot through the bounce at night if I was in need of sleep.

I think that Oliver is not used to green numbers and so he will probably bounce for a few cycles. So shooting through the bounce last night probably wouldn't have gained you a lot. In other words...I think it's fine how you handled it. Now we will just see where he lands when he clears the bounce :-D

Re: 1/16 Oliver AMPS 449

Hi Kelly!

As Marje has said, sometimes it's better to just let them stay high and catch up on your rest. Our brains don't work real well when they're sleep deprived anyway. (and unfortunately, managing this disease gives us plenty of opportunities to lose sleep!)

The only thing I'd like to add is when you got the 44 yesterday, you say you fed 2 Tablespoons of high carb. In the future, if you get a number under 50, try just a teaspoon of HC (usually we just feed the gravy off of one of the Gravy Lovers Fancy Feasts....if you open the can, put the lid back on and "drain" the gravy off, that's where the carbs are)

You want to get them back up, but don't want to send them too high..as well as not feeding too much so IF you need to feed again later, you still have a hungry kitty!

Come on down now Oliver! Nothing of interest up there on that floor!!

Re: 1/16 Oliver AMPS 449

Yes Chris I will not give so much next time. I am pretty sure he will and would eat though. He loves his FOOD! I got it though and will do so. :)
Thanks Chris so much

Re: 1/16 Oliver AMPS 449

Congrats on the reducie! Hopefully Oliver will clear the bounce quickly (but not TOO quickly) and the new dose will stick.

Have a great day, Kelly!

Re: 1/16 Oliver AMPS 449

You're welcome.

I will add that feeding a larger amount of HC will not cause them to bounce higher or give you a higher PS unless you JUST fed it. HC stays in the system a couple hours. It doesn't have a residual effect to the next day. The main reason to feed a smaller amount is so they don't get full.

Having said that, it's also ECID. I've found the best way for me to control Gracie's numbers is to not give and HC food and no gravy and give her a larger helping of LC and occasionally MC food if she's really low. Sienne does not give gravy because Gabby is allergic to it. She feeds her regular amount of food and adds honey. When we are starting out with a newly dx cat and CG, we are cautious and advise small amounts of HC gravy for numbers below 50. But, you know Oliver and you will have to experiment what works best for him.

Re: 1/16 Oliver AMPS 449 + 6 326

Sounds good... maybe you are right that the HC may be a bit much and to keep it more steady I have thought of giving him smaller meals more often? But Not sure as he is just NOT giving any regular pattern at all.
Is canned chicken a Free food? Or jsut cooked chicken? Any thoughts?
I did gt a can and feed him some in the after noon like 1 Tb spoon for a snack.

Re: 1/16 Oliver AMPS 449 + 6 326

I keep boiled chicken breast in the frig for Gracie as a super LC snack when she acts like she is absolutely starving but her numbers do not need any food management. I'm wary of giving any canned human tuna or chicken because they often contain vegetable broth that might have undesirable ingredients for cats (e.g. soy).

You are right that we can't yet see if Oliver needs an actual feeding schedule. Some cats do best on a mini=meal schedule like PS, +1, +2, +3 but others are fine free feeding up to nadir. It is totally an ECID thing but I do believe they all are better off with small meals than one big meal in the morning and one big one at night. Even before Gracie was FD, we fed all our cats several small meals all day.

Yes I agree. I can say that I do feed a larger meal AM and PM. He is a grazer so eats about 1/2 plus right away before shot. Then goes back for a few more bites. Then early afternoon will eat the rest. He then usually want something late afternoon so I will give him NO carb FF Shrimp and tuna or chicken canned or boiled then he is satisfied till dinner PMPS. Then about the same grazes through the early evening. So its sorta like 4 meals ish. LOL I feel he really does know, what he needs at the right time. He comes for the shot. He is very intuned with his body :)
He is my alarm clock ready for meals at just the exact time. Wakes me up by talking and pawing my face lightly! or shoulder If I am turned away from him. Gotta love him hes so sweet.
