Yesterday's Condo

Today Mally starts her .5 BID dosage. She had her first shot today at 9:07 AM.

I tested her quite a bit yesterday plus I had to put her drops in her ears. After all that she still slept on the pillow next to me last night.

Re: 1/14 Mally AMPS 293

Kitties are forgiving and loving...no doubt about that. It never ceases to amaze me that I can poke Esse, give her shots, withhold food, demand she eat, stick strips in her urine stream...and she still comes and bumps my legs and wants some laptime. Cats are phenomenal.

What kind of drops are you using in her ears? Some meds make the bs go higher than it normally would, so it would be interesting to know what meds there are.

Hope you have a great day!

Best-
Michele

Re: 1/14 Mally AMPS 293

good morning and welcome! I'm courious what the .5 BID will do for Mally. It does look like the 1u was a bit to much, and honestly, BID is the better way to go since Lantus is better as a 12/12 insulin.
You probably have a nice little bounce here from the lower numbers yesterday. Hopefully it won't last to long and Mally will come down in numbers.

Re: 1/14 Mally AMPS 293

Mally is on Mometamax drops once a day for two weeks. The vet did say they have steroids in them and might affect her numbers. I give her the drops in the evening. When I took Mally to my old vet on 12/30/09 and again on 1/7/10, I told him her ears were really bothering her, but he didn't do anything. The new vet I saw on Tuesday took one look at them and said they were very sore. He swabbed them and got a bunch of gunk out of them. The poor cat was batting at her ears like crazy so I'm hoping these drops help her.

What a difference in her numbers today compared to yesterday.

I know that with switching her dose to .5 BID, it's going to take a while for things to kick in so I'm going to be very patient and test to get good data on her.

Good luck with splitting up the dose! When we first started my vet wanted me to give Jasper 2u once a day

Mally is probably experiencing a bit of rebound today. Since she's been diabetic, her body is not use to the green numbers she got yesterday and her liver probably pumped out a bit of extra glucose because it was scared of going to low. It might take a while to retrain the liver to not bounce from the lower numbers, we call it Liver Training School (LTS for short). Its a normal phase in starting Lantus and everyone here has gone through it (some cats graduate to the next phase quicker than others)

Welcome to Lantus Land!

please make a notation on your ss what day you start and end the ear drops, k?
i'll see if i can get a couple of ladies to stop by about the ear drops with steroids. do you have an actual diagnosis for the ear problems?
we'll have to keep an eye on the numbers. it's not unusual for an increase to be needed sooner than later because of the steroids.

I do hope the drops help Mally. Sometimes there are other options for ear problems depending on the diagnosis. Someone should be stopping by here later with some more information on what she has used.

Was a culture & sensitivity run on the ear discharge?

Sometimes you do have to be a little bit more aggressive with insulin dosing when using steroids, as they can cause glucose toxicity to build up as they elevate the BGs. Once you do stop using them Mally's insulin needs will likely drop, so that is also a time to closely monitor. As Jill suggested, please do mark the start and stop dates for the drop use. I've also found it helpful on my own SS with Sasha's steroids to make a notation of what + hour you are giving the drops at night (such as PMPS +4, etc.).

So happy that you have switched to BID dosing with the Lantus. It should do great things for Mally.

I think that's the same drops that Jackie's Punk got. Punklet shot up into the yellows for a few days after that, Jackie wasn't happy at all, IIRC.

Are you cleaning her ears too? Did vet look at the gunk to see if it had yeast/bacteria/etc? Was a C&S done?

Hi Chris and Mally!
Just popping in to say welcome to LL :-D
Good luck on your new venture with Lantus!
I hope that Mally's ears get better soon.. You are getting a wealth of great information regarding the appropriate meds to use on our diabetic kitties..

Have a great day!

Hi Chris and Mally!

Jill gave me a nudge.....gotta love her!

Anysteroidy.....I want you to look an Punkin's ss, Sept. 12, 2009, gotta scroll down a bit, see in the box where it says where it talks about the vet visit? That's when they gave her the mometamax. Then I want you to look at her numbers later that same day, it's very unusual for Punk's numbers to be that high. You can see how low blue and green she is. My vet said the mometamax would not make her numbers go up so I gave her another round, then you'll also see where I stopped and how her numbers came back down.
Punk had an ear infection, after I stopped using the mometamax, she still had ABs on board and I continued to clean her ears with the Epi-Otic ear cleaner and she did fine.
Now I'm not recommending any course of action for you as I am not of the medical profession, animal or otherwise....just sharing my lil experience. I meant to find a non-steroidal equivalent, but didn't get around to it, perhaps the other knowledgeable ones will have ideas.

You do want to be careful when Mally stops the mometamax, my experience tells me that the numbers will drop.....just keep a watchful eye. This would be a great place for a pic of huge eyeball, but I don't have one.

ETA: change to the correct date of initial vet visit with steroid use on sept. 12, 2009. I am a doofus!

Hi everyone! When I took Mally to see the new vet on Tuesday, he did swab her ears and got a lot of brown gunk out of them. He did not do a culture (to my knowledge and I wasn't charged for one) but he did say her ears were incredibly sore. I already knew this since she had been scratching and batting at her ears for some time. Aside from getting her on the right track with her diabetes, the problem with her ears was another reason why I changed vets.

Mally gets the drops once a day - in the evening. Today it was at AM +10. The vet did tell me that the drops could make her sugar go up because they have steroids in them, but she's been miserable with those ears while my old vet ignored the problem and the drops are helping her. Her ears are still very sore inside and when I do her BG tests on her ears, I try to be very careful.

I will definitely keep an eye on her numbers when she goes off the drops. Today is only her second day on Lantus. Yesterday, per the vets' instructions, she only had the one 1 unit dose. Today she will get the two doses of .5 each. She'll get her second shot at 9:00 PM and I'm usually up late so I'll get at least two tests before I go to bed.

Thanks, everyone, for your input!!!

looks like a nice flat day, that is a good thing for only your second day of Lantus. :-D I'm glad you know to keep an eye on her numbers while you're using the ear drops (and after you stop using them).
