Last I knew it was 100mg per 10lbs of weight. I know you can go higher as necessary, it doesn't have any adverse effects known. Penny is on more because her ALT was over 400 and it's gotten her down to the low 200s regularly.
Ok great thanks so much. That’s great! Glad it’s working well for her :bighug:

Stacy, here’s an article on Milk Thistle if it helps. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/milk-thistle-or-silymarin
But doses vary depending on the form of milk thistle you use. I do like Denamarin and never give it on an empty stomach (I will never “dry pill” a cat as it can cause esophageal damage) but have still seen substantial improvements in my cat’s liver enzymes with the Denamarin. Denamarin has the silymarin (same as milk thistle) and also has SAMe in the tablet. I just mentioned the milk thistle because you seemed to want to stop giving her the tablets. It’s a great product. I have read (in some of the product reviews) people say their cats could not “tolerate” it and I can only assume it means that they vomited after taking it? That is most likely because they are giving it on an empty stomach.

An option for a liquid would be something like this Pet Wellbeing Bacon Flavored Milk Thistle. She may eat it in food.

Penny's ALT is always very elevated and I give her organic milk thistle. I pack size 3 capsules with the powder, she gets 2 per day. I can link you to what I use if you'd like. She did not tolerate Denamarin at all.

Penny also gets B-complex. She gets 1/10th of a human capsule put into a size 5 capsule. It prob looks like I'm running a weird pill factory over here.
That’s funny about the pill factory! I run a capsule filling factory as well! I pack Rutin into size 2 gelcaps and Ginger takes 4 Rutin per day (so that’s eight capsules). Fortunately, I can mix her Nattokinase into food since it doesn’t seem to have much flavor (she gets 15-20 per day.). And, of course the Jarrow B Right I put into size 4 capsules so that I can put her Lasix and her Clopidogrel in there. Or, in the morning, I put the Lasix into a Rutin capsule. I’m a gelcap fanatic! If I give a Cerenia, I always squeeze the tablet into a size 4 gelcap so nobody has to taste the nasty flavor. I do it with most meds and have even put Zofran “mini melts” into gelcaps. It’s so much better. You can even scrape the capsule over a stick of butter on one end to help if you want to — and if they spit the gelcap out, the medication isn’t starting to dissolve in their mouth. Just yesterday I had to give Drontal (dewormer) to some kittens and a few adult cats who were sharing the same litter box; I gel capped the Drontal. It’s nasty and starts to disintegrate almost immediately inside the mouth. I keep size 2,3, 4, and 5 capsules on hand. So I’m right there with you on running a pill factory. Lol!

I’m happy to hear that your Penny is doing so much better now. What a scare. I hope she does well on the Solensia. I had started one of my cats on it and it seemed to help her. I stopped last September though and have just switched to Adequan because it’s less expensive than the $70.00 monthly shot and I don’t have to drag her to the vet monthly for this. Intra-Muscular Adequan injections can be done at home. I just did her first one yesterday! At first it’s twice a week for Four weeks, then once a week for 4 weeks and then once a month. I hope it will help Sheba because I know they (Solensia and Adequan) work completely differently. I just still have too many questions about Solensia since it’s still new in the U.S. (I know some of our European members have been using it for a while now.) It was not approved for use in humans due to problems with it rapidly accelerating joint damage. Cats and humans are different though. Actually, both Solensia and Adequan can be given concurrently since they do work differently.

That’s interesting, Suzanne. I’ve always followed my vet’s instructions to give it to her two hours after a meal or one hour before a meal so that would be on an empty stomach.
Ivy has never had a problem, so it’s interesting that you’re saying not to give it on an empty stomach.
I always do follow it down with water, which I syringe gently into her mouth and she tolerates that just fine.
I was just exploring options to see if I could get away from pilling her if I didn’t need to.

I'm not sure if you've ever seen the Capful capsule filler, but I LOVE them. Their website seems no longer active, so I will be sad if they went out of business. It has made life so much easier! I am the same as you, everything gets a capsule, haha.

We decided to try the Solensia first, because of her stage 3 CKDand Adequan in higher doses did show kidney enlargement in dogs. If she gets worse or the Solensia doesn't do what we want it to, I would be okay in trying the Adequan with it. Quality of life over quantity is always my rule. I believe my vet will allow me to do the Solensia at home after her 2nd or 3rd visit, after he sees how well she is doing. Paws crossed.

What? A capsule filler?? Details please. And thank you! :bighug::bighug:

As long as you give it with a water chaser, that’s perfect! I would not change a thing. I just had a cat vomit if I didn’t give her at least a teaspoon of food with her Denamarin. Since Ivy has no problems with it, I would not change a thing!

I think you’re doing it all right! You have given it a lot of consideration. My vet was being a stickler for doing the Solensia in the office - and She a had four shots. I already spend way too much time at the vet and adding on another monthly trip was just a pain. Isn’t it wonderful when you see them starting to feel better! My vet said that after the first few injections you can space them out longer than a month.
