Funny how cats can remember things better than humans do. Jerry was due for his +5 reading I went to find him and he had found and gotten into kibble I had stashed away and completely forgotten about. I was very disappointed in him as he not only "broke in" to get it but he seemed to happily transition to his wet food diet. Well I think it may have been his body's natural reaction to do so and hopefully will help to keep him safe.
I figured he spiked himself from the kibble but tested anyway. 40. Never dealt with anything so low before. He's responsive so I wasn't sure whether to get into his gums to raise him. I took in some wet food for him which he happily went over. Not knowing what to do I "drugged" him sounds disgusting but I put honey into his wet food and mixed it up hoping he won't get comatose or anything else bad on me and he happily ate it. Will be under constant surveillance of him and testing a lot but thought I'd post up here to get thoughts. I'm very nervous for him. He may be spiked later from everything today I just want there to be a later. I will be checking back thank you.

Good catch on that 40 Sarah! If you haven't done so already, you should probably print a copy of the Shooting and Handling Low Numbers sticky. You never know when you might be without power and need the information.

You did the right thing at that 40. For numbers under 50, you should feed them high carb food. If you don't have a food like the fancy feast gravy lovers or other high carb food around, then adding a drop or two of honey or karo/syrup to his regular low carb food is the thing to do.

Please test again in 30 minutes. We want to make sure he is coming up.

Kibble takes a while to be digested. The honey + food combo was exactly the right thing to do. Please test him in 20 - 30 min. after you gave him some food.

Also, here are the instructions for handling low numbers.

I don't have fancy feast around but I do have friskies shreds/bits around for finicky kittens. Not to be redundant but is that considered higher carb since not pate and slathered in gravy?

Re: 09/27/13 AMPS 327 +5 40 record low

If you look at the food chart on Dr. Lisa's list, most of the Friskies savory shreds are 13-15% so not bad for high carb. The one's with gravy are a little higher carb. The advantage of the gravy ones is that you can strain them and just feed the gravy which raises the BG without filling them up much.

BTW - congratulations on the reduction! :-D

Thank you very much for the help. He's at 95 now. I know it may be temporary so what kind of testing should be happening from here?

Re: 09/27/13 AMPS 327 +5 40 record low

From the Low Numbers Sticky:
If your cat is testing in low numbers and you are not getting a quick response to your post, there are several things you need to do. (Low numbers are under 50mg/dL or 2.8 mmol/L.)

Depending on how carbohydrate sensitive your cat is, feed approximately a teaspoon or less of gravy from high carb food or high carb food only.
(If you have a cat with GI issues, using a couple of drops of syrup plus low carb food is an alternative.)
Test again in 15 – 20 min. Depending on the numbers, give more HC food.
Repeat the above steps every 15 – 20 min. until your cat tests in the 50 mg/dL (2.8 mmol/L) or above range for 2 consecutive tests. Continue to feed in small amounts to keep numbers in a safe range.
Test in 30 - 40 min. and repeat the test and feed process until there are 2 consecutive tests where numbers are stable or rising.
Test in an hour and follow the same steps.

DO NOT become complacent. If number have risen after one or two tests, it’s important to continue testing. Numbers may bobble up and down as the HC food and/or Karo wear off. DO NOT get one test where your cat has risen from low numbers into the 50s and go to sleep or leave the house. You are putting your cat in a risky situation. When in doubt, leave HC food out.

I'd test again in 30-40 minutes to make sure he is stable then again in an hour if he is. If he is dropping at the next test, you could feed him a bit of low carb food if above 50 and higher carb food if below 50.

So great to have guardian angels on his side. Thank you.

Re: 09/27/13 AMPS 327 +5 40 record low

No problem. We all remember what it was like the first time our cats went low. Very scary indeed!!

A favor to ask: Could you change your first subject line to include Jerry's name and your latest test numbers. That way people know you are out of the low numbers now. And you can probably remove the 911 icon as Jerry is currently out of danger.

BTW: It's good to know Jerry has the instincts to go for food when he is feeling low. Although it's probably time to throw out that dry food. Sneaky cat!

Ha yes I hadn't even noticed I was just focused on it not being gibberish thank you.
Very sneaky of him indeed but he got himself out of trouble in record time. Imagine that from a cat!
