So, Hardey was back down to 110 at 6pm last night. Not ideal considering two weeks ago he was averaging around 80 - 90. Just in case, I stopped with the Friskies and made him eat FF kitten turkey classic. He ate it (wasn't happy about it though). He ate more of it at 3am. When I got up at 6am, I tested BG and got 118. Still higher than I like. It just seems to be creeping up....

Gave him FF turkey and giblets classic with his appetite stimulant (6am) and at 7am he got beef baby food (no other additives but beef and beef broth) with his Slippery Elm Bark. I left down rest of FF for the day. He finished it.

My hubby came home at 5pm and gave him his Denamarin (wouldn't eat pill pocket, so he got it shoved down his throat).

At 6pm, he got another 1/2 can of FF turkey and giblets with his appetite stimulant. I just tested BG at 7pm and it's 130 again!!! I'm going to wait a few hours and test again.

My question is... how long does it take to get a possible higher carb food out of a cat's system? Is it possible he's still creeping up from the Friskies he got yesterday afternoon?

I bought some wellness today (wow is that expensive!) and thought about mixing it in with the FF. I'm worried about loose stools if I just give him the wellness (he seems to have a sensitive tummy when I switch foods too quickly). How long should I mix it before trying it all by itself? From Dr. Lisa's list, it doesn't seem like it's that much lower in carbs than the FF.... Do I even want to introduce a new flavor or am I going to make things worse in the long run?

Here's my question.
For the friskies turkey and giblets, do you have the one marked special diet pate or just the pate?
They both are in purple-ish cans so they are easy to confuse.
I had problems with the one that wasn't special diet.... I think it's higher than we have it listed.
The special diet is the one that's 5% and low enough in phosphorus for the ckd cats.

I do have a suggestion for getting him to eat. Mine has gotten pickier too.
This has really gotten her attention. I just crumble half of one on any food and she's suddenly willing to eat it again.

I can bag some for you and send you a sample if you'd like to try it first. Just send me your address by pm.

Interesting.... I started him out on special diet, but had switched to the regular pate because there were other flavors to choose from. I guess when I looked at the chart, they were all pretty close, so I figured all of them would be okay. The new pate with cheese is what started to cause the trouble I think. I'll go back to buying the special diet. Hopefully he'll eat it. Tonight he's been eating the FF turkey/giblets, so maybe that will work. On the chart, that seemed really low.

The freeze dried treats are neat. I've never seen them before. Thanks for the offer of the sample. Are you sure you can spare one?

I was just planning on mailing you a few of the rounds put in a Ziploc bag. I can get them in Albuquerque for 9.99 a package... or on amazon.... ( the amazon price probably equals out having to go to the particular store)
They seem to be new.
I'm thinking I'm going to experiment with getting mine to start eating frozen raw again.... with this sprinkled on it.

The carb values we have are also just averages. There could be batches that are higher. I sure hope Friskies isn't experimenting with their formulas.
Mine is a friskies girl even though I keep trying to get her to eat all of the possibilities.
I have several varieties I rotate since she won't eat a repeat of the same flavor one after another. I always have at least 6 open cans.

Friskies has affected numerous cats... with it's trace of rice flour.
I thought it was raising our numbers for a while but I think it was arthritis instead. Our bgs went down after starting adequan.
Shadow eats mostly 8 % carb foods. ( friskies poultry platter is her favorite at the moment)

you asked how long higher carb food can affect BGs - dry food can still be there the next day. Sounds like you've given all canned food though, and i doubt that would still be there the next day. maybe try going back to foods that are on the chart so you know what the carb count is.

hardey's looking pretty great, though, with not having any insulin. congrats on being OTJ!

Thanks. I've been doing FF all day today (he's not thrilled about it, but is eating). I'm going to test tonight and see what we get.
