09/06 Zoe AMPS 242 +3 84 Worried about going to work

Zoe got one unit of Lantus two hours ago. Her glucose when I gave her her insulin was at 242. she has eaten. Her glucose is now at 125. Only two hours in and it’s dropped quite a bit and I have to go to work I’m worried if it’s going to drop too low if I should rub some honey on her gums before I leave if I should take her to the vet so they can watch her. Any suggestions??

8:40 am she ate a little more. Wellness core pate. I’m not sure of the # of carbs.

Hi Katrina!

That is a big drop but Zoe is still in good numbers. Since you have to leave for work I think to be safe it might be a good idea to leave some Medium carb food out. If you don’t have any then I think maybe put a couple drops of honey in her food.

Maybe some other members will chime in with ideas too :)

Her numbers have been all over the place. She’s good now but doesn’t lantus peak at 6 hours?

It depends on the cat but yes, typically it peaks at +6.

The medium carb food will boost her numbers so that she doesn’t keep dropping.

She might not even drop but I think this is a “better safe than sorry” situation.

I’m just worried if she doesn’t eat. She’s not a big eater.
There is a risk she may not eat, but usually, like humans, when their BGs go low they get hungry and usually eat.

If you rub honey in the gums it will wear off but if there is MC available Zoe will be able to do a little self regulation.

Can you grab another test at +2.5 or +3?

@carfurby has more experience than me in these situations, She’s at work, but maybe if she hits the board this morning she can chime in.

Carla, what would you typically do in this situation?

Yes I think I will just stay for a while. I’m already late to work. I will stay and test at 9:00. That will be 3 hours.
In general her numbers have drastically dropped. I think her body is regulating it self. I believe steroid injections are what made her diabetic and now her body is starting to regulate. She was originally on two units twice a day. Then when her numbers started dropping I started doing one unit and sometime she won’t even get it twice a day because her numbers were so low. I asked the Vet yesterday if I could get different syringes so I could start giving her a half a unit and she said that that would not be a good idea. Which I don’t understand why it would not

Ok let us know what your +3 is. If you wouldn’t mind could you update your status so that it has your test info on there. It will help your post get more attention. Maybe write something like this:

09/06 Zoe AMPS 242 +2 125 Worried about going to work

Then at 9 update with your +3

Vets sometimes are resistant to different methods of treatment. In the end you are in charge of Zoe’s treatment so it’s up to you. If you want to dose in half units You can buy half unit syringes at Walmart ... do you know if you need a prescription for syringes where you’re from?

Give her some gravy from high carb food to slow her down if you have it. Just the gravy. Then retest 30 minutes later to see if BG has risen. You can leave out high carb food for her to eat in your absence if need be if you can boost her BG up a bit now.

It's really impossible to help you with dosing without more data to look at in a consolidated fashion on the SS. If you could get the SS set up it would really help us to help you. If you need help getting the SS set up, just holler and we will help you.

Someone actually offered to do it for me. I messaged them this morning. So hopefully she will have time today.

At the top of the post on the right choose Thread Tools and then edit title :) no apologies needed. We all started at the beginning.

Just call local pharmacy and ask is script is needed. In the mean time you could just eyeball the dose or use calipers to measure.

If you can I would leave enough mc out so she can graze on it when she needs to.

Without a SS it's hard to say what to do. I'd definitely leave some mc or hc food out if you have to go to work.

With that +3 84 I am inclined toward leaving out HC... or MC with the HC gravy on there or something to slow the drop

Oh my gosh I’m so sorry, I just saw this! No prescription required, I get the Relion syringes from Walmart, about $13 for a box of 100.
I did go buy them from Walmart. She did end up dropping too low and I had to take her into the vet. My vet still would not give me syringes to do a half unit so I went and bought them. They are a much shorter length I didn’t realize that. They are 6 mm versus 12 mm. Does that matter?

Yes it was resolved my an emergency trip to the vet. This forum is too difficult to use. I will see if I can figure out how to do it.
Bron I think this incident was a few days ago (Friday) kitty seems to be ok looking at SS numbers.
The post just got bumped up @Armish & Roo

@Kchid could you please remove the 911 from the title since the incident is resolved.
911's get our pulses racing
vet

The shorter needle is fine. If you like a longer needle you should be able to get some that are 8mm but may need to shop around for them a bit as the shorter needles have become more popular with human diabetics. Pharmacy may even order them in for you.

To remove the "911" go to Thread Tools in upper right of screen and select edit title. Then you can remove the prefix. :)

The length of syringes doesn't make a difference. It's just personal preference on whether you want shorter syringes or longer syringes. I'm glad Zoe is okay.

Katrina I am sorry you are having trouble using the forum....
Please let us know how we can help. It can be confusing in the beginning trying to work it all out.
I'm glad Zoe is safe after the low numbers. That is always scary the first few times.
You are doing a really good job keeping your little girl safe.
