J.D. seems fine. Neither cat wanted 1st Breffis, so I took them outside and J.D. didn't want to go on a walk again, and went to his deck, so I tied up Ginger to the post and came back in the house.

I do want to ask a question about dementia, though. For about a year, my vet has been saying J.D. may have some dementia, and I guess I didn't quite know what he was talking about.
Yesterday, I wandered into Tanya's CRF site and found myself in the description for dementia, and J.D. does have a bunch of the signs, like the silly noises he makes are yowling, when he feels lost, and he paces sometimes. I ended up sending an email to these people http://www.vetplus.co.uk/PDF/LEAF/aktivait_cat_leaflet.pdf to see if they have something available in the U.S. I'll probably post on Health as well.

For now, I'm going back out with my cats.

Re: 09/03 J.D. AMPS 291 - dementia question

I'm glad JD is doing okay this morning. Maybe both our kitties will see blue today. I hope you get some good informatin on whether the aktivait cat will help JD.

Re: 09/03 J.D. AMPS 291 - dementia question

Bear Man showed several signs of dementia. Some of it may have been due to the toxic side effects of medications he took, such as Baytril. He had circling, wailing, incontinence, and disorientation. His blindness made all of it worse. One supplement that I gave to him for this was SAMe. Denosyl contains this. I can't say if it helped him at all, but I expect that supplements for dementia would best be started as early as possible. When Bear Man was feeling lost, I just took him to his bed so he knew where he was, and calmed him. Hugs to you and (((J.D.))).

Thanks Linda. Where do you purchase this SAMe? I tried to Google it and it seems impossible, so I gave up.

I often wonder if his eye sight is bad (which my vet says he sees shadows) or he's deaf, because he doesn't respond to me, but then it's all off and on, and sometimes he seems to see and hear just fine. It's like he has good days and "bad" days, and so it could just all be related to his pancreatitis acting up, too, and him having some pain or something. And sometimes he yowls right after he chases Ginger around the house, and sometimes he yowls when he can't find me.

He sure has had the softest fur, for about the past 3 days. Numbers aren't great, but his fur feels like they are.

Re: 09/03 J.D. AMPS 291 - dementia question

I purchased my SAMe through my vet, because everything seems to be a bit more difficult here in Canada to buy online. I think that you can get it from an online source such as the entirelypets website (look for Denosyl, which is the Nutramax name for their SAMe product). You should probably check it out with your vet. The other supplement you are looking at also looks interesting. The vet might give you advice on giving more than one supplement. It has been a while since I gave it, but if I recall, the tablet was large, and cannot be cut. It has to be given on an empty stomach an hour before meals. There is a chewable tablet, but I didn't try that, so I don't know how palatable it is. So it may be hard to get it in him.

Bear Man had his good days and bad ones too.

Try here for SAM-e (including a hyphen when you're searching helps. I've seen it in the vitamin section at Walgreens.

Thanks, I'll ask my vet.

+2.5 is 423

I think his liver is fine.

Thanks, Sienne. Maybe, I'll go to Walgreens and get some, and ask my vet before giving it.

((Dyana and JD))
I was looking for Sam-E (also called denosyl) for a friend and it's hard to get it in smaller sizes. The Denamarin from the vet also includes milk thistle and is quite expensive. The links Linda posted have it available it in small animal sizes. The Sam-E pills by themselves can't be broken up because apparently it tastes quite horrible, so they are coated.

My friend had bought Denamarin from her oncologist vet (which was why we were looking for cheaper sources) and the vet said that Denamarin is the only one where there the contents have been verified. You can buy Sam-E off the shelf, but look for a reputable manufacturer.

Glad to see JD has come down since the earlier red number. Sorry he may be experiencing some dementia. My first cat Baba would cry forlornly when she was "lost" in the house and though normally very affectionate, at times she was oblivious to us. Our vet attributed that to age related dementia (she was 19) and her CRF and vision loss, he did not know of any treatment. Glad to hear there is some medication now that may help.

Come on down JD! So sorry about the dementia. Turnup has it. She has good days and bad days, but it is very obvious with her. A lot of walking in circles, crying, obvious confusion, etc. She also has iris melanoma so she is losing her eyesight as well. It takes a lot of patience. Hope you have a great night Dyana!

If you order denosyl or denamarin (both made by nutramax), google it for the best price. I use denamarin and I always google each time I order because sometimes its cheaper in one place than another. My latest order was at www.allivet.com.
