Well, he did it. After flirting with 90 for the last couple of days, Kobe took the plunge under 90. Not a day too soon either. He's going from 2.5 mg of Prednisolone to 2.0 mg tonight with the start of his taper.

I had emailed his vet asking about the taper plan, and she liked the idea of gradually decreasing to 1.0 mg of Prednisolone before starting to alternate days. so that is great. Bhe wants me to reduce to 0.5 units tonight...

My plan is to reduce from 1 unit to 0.75 units tonight. 90 is a very conservative reduction point. right? Am I crazy? The protocol is to reduce by 0.25. I am only second guessing it because he is also getting Prednisolone reduced. Obviously, the Pred has been a factor in elevating his BG. I just need someone to tell me to do the 0.75. Thank you!!!

90 is the reduction point for people following SLGS. Typically people follow SLGS if they can't monitor as much or are feeding dry food - which you are. The studies on TR using a 50 point reduction point were all on wet or raw food. Dry food may be metabolized differently and we don't have data to say it's safe to use a 50 point reduction point for a cat on dry food. The 90 gives a little bit of margin. You used 70 the first time round, but there wasn't the tapering pred in the picture. Good to reduce tonight. Gather data about what a difference the 0.5 mg difference of pred makes on his BG. Good luck with the new dose.

I was probably unclear, I'm sorry. I definitely wanted to reduce tonight. My plan was just to do a .25 unit reduction and follow SLGS. When I told the new vet that we REALLY LIKE about the plan, she suggested a .5 unit reduction. I didn't want to change the plan. But I didn't want to make her mad either.

We did the .25 unit reduction. I just was hoping someone could tell me that was the right move.

Thanks for your response!
