Hi everyone! Looks like the 2 units are working their magic: Chispa's BG dipped below 300 for the first time. She is proud to have earned that yellow square!

On the slightly concerning side, she's had two days of soft-ish stools, and this morning she vomited a fair amount of clear liquid about an hour before her shot. We reduced her prednisolone from 5mg/day to 2.5mg three weeks ago as of tomorrow -- about the time it takes to clear their system, as I understand it -- so I'm praying this is an isolated disturbance and not the return of IBD symptoms. I guess time will tell. She has also transitioned from Hill's k/d canned diet to 1/2 kd and 1/2 Weruva LC over the same period of time, so it's *possible* that had something to do with it, but I doubt it.

Wishing all cats and beans a happy Sunday :):cat::coffee:

Nice to see yellow. Fingers and paws crossed that was a one and done with the soft stool:and vomit. Have you ever added a probiotic or pure pumpkin to her food? I’ve used a teaspoon of canned pure pumpkin once or twice a day in the past. I freeze the pumpkin in ice cube trays.

Hi @tiffmaxee -- You know what, I have used the pumpkin trick in the past, and it has worked -- not always, but sometimes. I've also been giving her Visbiome, but I might have left it out on the counter too long at one point, so it may not be working as it should. (I should have replaced it then, but the stuff is so darned expensive.) I'll go get some pumpkin today. Thanks for the reminder.

Two more yellows @ +4 and +6! Woohooo!
And woohooo to you too! Successful BG readings ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. Now you deserve a high carb treat. I prefer

Well, after a day of yellow squares, we are back to the red with 429 @+11 and 479 @ +2.

What happened??

The only thing I can think of is that when I feed her, she eats the LC Weruva first and leaves the HC Hill’s k/d for later. Maybe she’s eating the H/C close enough to the next test that it’s pushing her BG higher… but then that doesn’t explain why she was in the yellow all day.

This isn’t the first time she has had a day of low-for-her numbers followed by unexpectedly high ones later. Is this normal? Can anyone explain?

Thanks!

It is super common for kitties to bounce back into higher numbers after going "low". As they get used to having BG numbers that are closer and closer to normal, they bounce less, but for now, yellow was new and sufficiently off of what has been "normal" for Chispa, so her body panicked a little and overcompensated.

From one of the stickies, here's a slightly better explaination:

"
  • Bouncing - Bouncing is simply a natural reaction to what the cat's system perceives as a BG value that is "too low". "Too low" is relative. If a cat is used to BGs in the 200's, 300's, or higher for a long time, then even a BG that drops to 150 can trigger a "bounce". Bouncing can also be triggered if the blood glucose drops too low and/or too fast. The pancreas, then the liver, release glucogon, glycogen and counter-regulatory hormones. The end result is a dumping of "sugar" into the bloodstream to save the cat from going hypoglycemic from a perceived low. The action is often referred to as "liver panic" or "panicky liver". *Usually*, a bounce will clear kitty's system within 3 days (6 cycles). "

Thank you, Cali! That makes sense. I'm glad Chispa's little organs are paying attention, even if the result is somewhat misguided. Getting ready to test in a few minutes, so we'll see if they've calmed down over night. :):cat:

I feel your pain! The bouncing is frustrating and personally hard for me to wrap my head around. What would we do without this forum to help guide us through all these ups and downs?!

Hi. I am part of the Ibd group and hope these are not duplicative suggestions. I had clear vomit from my kitty when she had an empty stomach evidently from excess stomach acid. Some people just feed closer together and some people use pepcid. For diarrhea, we used metronidazole for short term and s boulardi for long term. Hope this is. Helpful

Thanks, @Dds35day -- I appreciate your letting me know. Looking back at my spreadsheet, it probably had been longer than usual since her last feeding, so I'll be mindful of that going forward. All best to you and your kitty. :)
